Good win yesterday. Cedeno starting back to back games after the bonehead move on Friday? No bad goes unrewarded I guess. With DeRosa and Murton on the bench, the Cubs have a very right handed bench today. With Miller going, I'm glad the whole pen is available today. From what I hear, the wind is blowing out.

With our runs allowed/runs scored, the Cubs expected W/L would lead the division.....not that that will make up for the 3 games back we are, but its encouraging to see that there is definite room for improvment in the outcome over a larger sample size. I know many of you haven't read the article on Wood's tendinitis on Cubs.com, as Prior and Wood news is no longer of much interest to the masses, but it had a gem on base-running:
On the run: Bobby Dernier began his reintroduction to baserunning on Saturday, talking to the Cubs' Matt Murton, Felix Pie, Ronny Cedeno and Ryan Theriot. "We'll have it the whole homestand," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said about the extra schooling. "It wins baseball games for you, and we need improvement." Everyone was expected to get some tutoring from Dernier, who is the baserunning instructor for the Cubs' Minor League system. "That was one of his best strengths as a player," said Piniella, who called Dernier up for the sessions. "He's in our organization; let's utilize him."
It's good to see Lou say some of that. You all should read some of his other comments in there.

I live on the lake. Wind is blowing out big time. I'm saying Uncle Cliff gets a "tater" today. Miller BETTER keep the ball DOWN today!!!

Sayers, Cedeno had a great game yesterday, and Lou is desperately looking for a lineup that can be remotely consistent. I'd say he's also trying to give Ronnie a final chance to prove he belongs on this roster when Soriano comes back.

Floyd isn't going to get many taters if he looks at fastballs down the middle of the plate.

Well, we have had 3 starts by Wade Miller, and they have all been different shade of badness. You certainly need the 12 pitchers when your starter has a hard time getting past the 4th inning. I give this to the end of the month. A potential trade exists between the Cubs (who now have to many outfielders and plenty of middling relievers) and Philadelphia (who have an extra starter and are short outfielders and relievers).

Sorry to be redundant but my roomates are asleep and I have no where to vent but here: MILLER SUCKS!!!! 10.54 ERA, 13.2 IP, 16 ER, 6 SO, 6 BB, 24 H - IN 3 STARTS Most significantly we had a 2 run lead and now a 3 run deficit. We are 0-7 in playing from behind this year. The last thing this team needs is another reason to play with their heads down. This is getting frustrating and early at that. Well here is hoping for 1-7. A cubs fan, always hoping.

I can remind you why Ramirez is on the team... if Miller gets one more start because he doesn't technically lose this game is beyond me...

EMANN: "Miller BETTER keep the ball DOWN today!!!" Well, guess this didn't happen. don't quite know if this is possible in many weather conditions. But - he did get "five days rest".

Hope to hell they bring Guzman back as quickly as possible - it always looks like BP when Miller's out there.

right handed pitchers' day to suck today. great balance from this club...every spot takes a turn spoiling otherwise decent games.

5 outta 10...my bad...FIRE DUSTY...AND JIM HENDRY...AND YOSH...AND PK WRIGLEY...AND THE SECRETARY THAT CUTS THE CHECKS...AND THE GUY IN THE PARKING LOT THAT CHECKS IDS...AND THAT BEER VENDOR IN THE UPPER LEFT FIELD DECK THAT WALKS TOO SLOW...

At this rate, not so sure about my willingness to spend my "free game ticket vouchers" for Cubs visit to PNC next week, if only to come out on the losing end of several disappointments. Maybe I'll wait until Cubs visit later this year- maybe they'll be good by then. Because as we've been repeatedly assured at this point, "It's early yet."

"i need a 12th pitcher...we cant go with 11 pitchers." - lou meh. bring on cherry...leave the guzman alone...at least for now, imo...

guz's first AAA start was really really rough, btw..no Ks...hits/walks... dunno if it was a bad night or what, though... cherry's had a great spring and a pretty damn good AAA stint so far.

Cubs don't need a fifth starter until May 2nd... Cubs are just going to have to dump Miller now unless he's willing to take accept a minor assignment.

This one's on you, bullpen. Offense rallied to tie it at 7 and at 9. The offense gave us chances to win. Gotta make good pitches. It's tough weather to pitch in, but it's not impossible. It seems like it's something different every darn day with this club. One day the pitching's good, offense is bad. Next day, we score some runs, we can't get anybody out. Day after that, we're actually leading, but we stop catching the ball. Put it together, fellas. Figure it out, Uncle Lou.

unless uncle lou can pitch or swing a bat what's left for him to figure out besides who pitches 5th and who plays CF/RF while soriano is rehabbing in LF?

and man...isnt it a bitch to see soriano swing at such ugly ugly pitches with an ugly ugly swing and still cash in those doubles/triples/etc. the homers are rarely cheap, but the singles/doubles/triples just rarely seem to be works of art compared to how much stuff he swings and misses at. hope the hammy injury isnt chronic

Not putting the blame on Lou for this one, for clarity. Perhaps when I said "This one's on you, bullpen," that was not crystal for you. That said, why can't we put it together every day? It's not him throwing, catching, and hitting, but it's his responsibility to make his guys ready to do that. He'd be the first guy to agree with me.

That wasn't meant to be condescending there, crunch. After re-reading that, I realized that you might take it as such. No harm or offense meant.

Although I will say that I would have brought Dempster in for the 9th instead of bringing Howry back. That's a closer situation at home, in my eyes. Especially considering Howry had some balls hit pretty hard in the 8th. No way I let Cedeno hit in the ninth, also. He couldn't hit with a boat oar right now.

Just imagine how Soriano could do if he layed off all the crap he swings at and waits for a fastball somewhere in the zone.

wes, i dont blame this on lou. i think i blamed dusty...and a beer guy..and the equipment manager...and a dead guy, though. i pretty much like to blame players and this is a great one to show that one showing up. you can minor nit-pick a few lou moves today, but you can do that with almost every game.

oh yeah, in response to the "unless lou can" thing... that's just me saying the players gotta make it happen. lou can just put them in to play, take them out, and call some plays as far as immediate in-game tactics go...and its pretty safe to assume "hey you, screw this up." isnt what he's telling them.

So is it safe to say Theriot can not play SS? It would be nice to play him there and DeRosa at second.

here's all thati learned today 1) the cubs will hit when it gets warm, just as many (myself included) have said. 2) it's tough to win when wade miller pitches. 3) ryan dempster isn't going to have a perfect season. don't worry about losing these close games....i'd rather be here after 3 weeks than in the same place losing the blowouts and winning the close ones. this is a plus for games to come. run of bad luck so far in just not getting an extra run or two. no worries, home for a pretty big homestand with Z's chance to get it going again, then the two tough lefties. let's go. should be marquis, zambrano, hill next weekend at the cards assuming they skip miller again. which they'd better.

When did DLee and Jacque swear off hitting HRs? Eighteen games, and not a one between them. Let's get going, boys Nasty loss -- Soriano limps up and comes through, then the Cubs tie it on a wind-blown blooper in the 9th -- and STILL they lose at home! Still....Dempster was eventually going to give up some runs, and he got beaten by the best -- it happens. Soriano did not look good running out his double -- he may be a few more days away. Man, it feels like the Cubs could/should be 4 over rather than 4 under. Nothing a modest winning streak won't cure.

Green Lantern: "don’t worry about losing these close games" Your encouragement is needed yet, this makes the early 2007 Cubs 0-8 in 1 run games or games that they have had the lead. Our pitching staff has showed plenty of promise and the bats will warm up but, the more close game defeats we suffer or the more leads we surrender damage is done upon the morale that even $310 Million cannot fix. Changing Miller is a given but outside that I am not sure how many more changes or adjustments of player/managerial personnel needs to be made as much as the adjustment of our attitude. By that I mean the Cubs cannot play like it is a given that they will be defeated come a one run game or blown lead. One things the Cards have that I am hard pressed to see in cubbie blue is swagger. I am not saying anything I am just saying.

310m fix mostly lasts 3-7 years depending on how it works out (with a few 1-year guys barely blipping that 310m)...its not like this number being thrown around is a 200m fix like the yanks throw around yearly. still, the cubs havent "caught a break" or other baseball-luck related things...and on more than 1 occasion the team has blown it late causing the loss. today was just "one of those games" to me...the team didnt exactly bumble into today's loss. they got the talent...hopefully the mental errors, talent shortcomings, and "bad breaks" wont come as much as they have early this year.

the ability to win close games is not, right now, a cub trait. i think that this team, on some base level, fears that they are going to, somehow someway, come up short. this changing of culture thing takes time. a lucky break here or there, a good move or two by hendry, some well chosen words from loupa, and it could happen. but it is definitely going to take some time.

maybe they could light some candles for good fortune and Jobu can come bless the bats for some cigars and rum.

Crunch- They haven't "caught a break?" A wind-blown pop-up scores 2 with 2 outs in the ninth to tie the game? That's not a break? They are making their own bad breaks late in games -- Izzy double-clutches on a routine play, Cedeno overslides the bag with the tying run in the 9th, etc. There just always seems to be one or two players that fail in key situations, which is costing them close games. It's a different player each time, which makes it hard to pinpoint what is wrong. Also, any item DLee, Jones or Soriano wants to hit his first HR of the year, it would be fine with me.

Im glad that the boys in the TV booth pointed out the fact that DeRosa should have gone to second on his bloop hit in the 9th. He stood at the plate watching the ball, thinking it would go foul. He should have at least been running to first. That might have cost them the game. But, hey. Those guys are pros. They know what they are doing. Ahem.

YOU Notice how "Silent" CHAD is? The checks stopped flowing from Itz-TURD-is, so he's shut up on the topic about the "Gold Glover".

Wade Miller: "The conditions on the field had nothing to do with how I'm executing pitches," Miller said. "If I don't [execute], it'll be a long season for me." Uh no, Wade. That will make it a pretty short season. for you.

michaelweaselo, it appears that you were watching the game... did you see the replay where DeRosa said he thought the ball was, "50 feet foul"... i mean, your right... in theory I guess you should run every ball out even if it is hit behind you but to his credit without the wind that ball is 14-15 rows up on the first base side.

Hate to say it, but this game should have been a 10-9 win for the Cub's. The Theriot baserunning gaff in the first turned out to be huge. Good to see some clutch hitting, though.

On top of all this, I had a dream during a nap today that Ronnie Woo Woo was following me around all over the place and would not stop being Ronnie Woo Woo. Except he was cheering for me: "Woo. Wes. Woo. Wes. Woo. Wes" for what seemed like 8 hours. Horrible. Talk about nightmare fuel. One of those dreams that you really wish you could wake up from but you can't no matter how hard you try, you know? Trying as hard as you can to commit dreamicide and there's nothing you can do... Ugh. New Cubs day tomorrow. Hopefully Ronnie Woo Woo free, as well.

"Crunch- They haven’t “caught a break?”" well...yeah, they have. that was a bit overstated by me...could have said it better. it'd be nice to catch more of those...its a pretty intangible thing anyway as far as how its supposed to improve your chance of catching a break or preventing giving a break to the other team. its just a way to talk about all that stuff that isnt supposed to happen too much, but does when its important...like a relatively easy play for a quality-glove SS in a playoff game after a famous fan incident.

"The E-Man — April 22, 2007 @ 9:21 pm YOU Notice how “Silent” CHAD is? The checks stopped flowing from Itz-TURD-is, so he’s shut up on the topic about the “Gold Glover”." What do you want me to say? That you are all right and I am wrong? We'll that's not gonna happen. It's a very long season. Albert Puljos was hitting .200 today. You think he's going to finish with that average. 18 games into a season is not enough to say I'm wrong. If he started out hot and was hitting .360 after 18 games, I wouldn't be claiming victory. Catch me at game 81 and we can take a long hard look at things. Have I been silent? Yes! There is nothing for me to say. I talked a lot of shit backing him up and he's not showing it, so, I am keeping my mouth shut.

"What do you want me to say? That you are all right and I am wrong? We’ll that’s not gonna happen." No duh! "Maybe it’s send Cedeno down and bring Guzman up time." "No way I let Cedeno hit in the ninth, also. He couldn’t hit with a boat oar right now. " Cedeno hit a HR yesterday. Pie .136 .174 .273 Cedeno .107 .133 .357 Ward .200 .429 .300 Miller 10.54 ERA Should all keep their bags packed. I expect Cherry to get the call up sometime soon.

Hate to say it, but this game should have been a 10-9 win for the Cub’s. The Theriot baserunning gaff in the first turned out to be huge. Theriot's baserunning turned out to be irrelevant because Lee scored later in the inning. Lee reached base only because the throw came home on the play. If Theroit holds at 3rd, then Pujols steps on 1st keeping Lee off the basepaths.

Some excellent matchups coming up: Z v. Vargas (This shouldn't be a good matchup, but considering the way Z has been pitching, it will probably be a high scoring game) Suppan v. Hill Sheets v. Lilly

CHAD: "Have I been silent? Yes! There is nothing for me to say. I talked a lot of shit backing him up and he’s not showing it, so, I am keeping my mouth shut." ALRIGHT! Well - you gotta take risks sometimes. But the pony you picked is ready for the glue factory!!!

Salisbury/Rosenbloom on ESPN 1000 in Chicago were discussing the lineup and basically echoed the same point I made weeks ago.....OF defense has and will kill this pitching staff if Pie goes down to AAA. Soriano will play LF, Pie has to play CF (only person in the OF who can catch the ball and knows where and how to throw the ball). RF is Lou's choice Murton/Floyd/Jones - pick 2, trade 1. Rosenbloom said he would forecast a pitching staff revolt if they sent down Pie. I don't think I'd go that far, but he still makes a valid point. Their proposed lineup: Soriano - LF Theriot - SS Lee - 1B Ramirez - 3B Barrett - C RF (Floyd, Jones, Murton) DeRosa - 2B Pie - CF (except on days when Marquis or Z are pitching he should bat 9th). I really can't disagree with any of that. Lou has to sort out the pieces of this roster that Hendry stiffed him with and make it work day in, day out. Who could blame him or disagree if Izturis becomes his late inning defense replacement at 2B/SS, Cedeno goes to AAA, Jones or Murton get traded for whatever, Miller gets released/traded, Cherry gets recalled, and Marmol or Guzman takes the next 5th start?

In honor of dispatching with the Astros, this painting is titled “The Sweep”.
I retired a couple years ago, and took a job at Wrigley as a security guy. SO cool having Wrigley as your office. SO cool being there when PCA got his first hit.
“The Sweep” happens at the end of every game - the security staff sweeps through the ballpark making sure it’s empty.
(Hopefully I’ll be putting this painting up often this year.)
Lastly, because working for the Cubs, they understandably don’t want you voicing opinions on social, which is why I’m only painting the banners here.

Honorable mention to Jim Bullinger via BleedCubbieBlue:

Bullinger, a converted shortstop, had pitched in three games before he came to the plate. He had entered the game to relieve starter Shawn Boskie after four innings, and came to the plate to lead off the fifth, and hit Rheal Cormier's first pitch over the left-field wall to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead; they eventually won the game 5-2 in 14 innings. Of the 129players to homer in their first MLB at-bat, Bullinger is one of just 32 to hit that blast on the first big-league pitch he saw (including Contreras) and one of just six pitchers to do so.

Most of this activity will lead nowhere, of course, but it is fantastic that they’re looking for talent in every nook and cranny. You never know where that can lead, and virtually nothing is lost if if leads nowhere, as long as no one of superior talent and potential is losing an opportunity.

Childersb3: Miguel Cruz walked six in 1.2 IP in his last start, so I guess he is improving. Wilme Mora also walked six in one of his appearances a week or two ago, and one or two others have walked five. I don't know what would be the most I have ever seen a pitcher throw in a game out here, because the manager / pitching coach usually gets the pitcher out of the game if it gets too ridiculous.

As for the attendance, probably about 20 of the 25 were early arrivals for the Savannah Bananas game who came over to Field # 1 to see what was going on, and once they saw all the bases on balls (12 walks by Cubs pitchers and four by Angels pitchers) they ran away screaming. I'm used to it so it didn't bother me that much.

Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

Have to search for MiLB arm depth anywhere you can and at all times!!!

Phil, is that a backfield record?

Also, 6 BBs for Cruz in 2 IP. What's the most walks you've seen in one EXT ST outing that you can recall?

The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does he remind anybody else of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.
