I'm glad to see DeRosa's in there tonight. His swollen elbow or whatever it was must be okay. I want to say that this lineup sucks, but it's hard to.

The lineup does suck. Soriano has no business leading off. He's gimpy. His last stolen base attempt was Aug 1. Theriot is better. He's dying hitting second, let's move him back to #1 and see what happens. JJ was Piniella's preseason pick to bat #2. He's done well there (333 .368 .528 .896) this season. Bat him second. Leave DLee at #3, and put Aramis in his normal #4 and see if both of them don't start scoring in front of Soriano who we'll move to #5. Soriano has actually done well hitting fifth the last 3 years. Aram has scored only ~ 60 Runs primarily because our #5 and #6 hitters have been weak. Soriano at #5 ends that problem. Floyd goes to #6 and DeRosa #7, Kendall #8. Theriot Jones Lee Ramirez Soriano Floyd DeRosa Kendall Marquis

Aram batting fifth again. Let's hope he likes hitting there today as much as he did yesterday. This has to be the start of the overdue hot streak.

Cwtp, you are right about sori carrying the injury. It looks that way to me too. But i think using the lineup that worked yesterday is no bad thing.

Brewers hit into DP's first two innings. 0-0 Cards up 1-0 in the 2nd. I too am fine with the lineup. It doesn't make sense having Soriano lead off with his health and his power...but, in case we haven't figured out by now...we are stuck with that so it's really a non issue in my book. As for Aram batting 5 and Floyd 4, I think there is something to the righty/lefty/righty in 3 through 5, so I'm ok with him trying to go with this lineup another game and hope that lighting strikes as it did yesterday. I think Theriot, Soriano, Lee, Aram, Jones, Floyd would make a hell of a top 6 in the order...but it worked yesterday, so hopefully it will work today

"Theriot is better. He’s dying hitting second, let’s move him back to #1 and see what happens." Wait! Are you saying that a player may hit better in a certain spot than other spots? That Theriot hits better leading off than he does in the 2 hole? That is radical thought. The problem is that Soriano hits best in the 1 spot and he's a better hitter than Theriot. Soriano leads off. So say Soriano. So says Lou.

Is there any written rule in baseball about stealing signs via video equipment...or is it just an unwritten rule? Is there any punitive procedure if a team is caught doing that?

Soriano's numbers sure drop off when he hits 2nd, but 5th is another story. While the OPS isn't as lofty, it's still solid. And the RBIs from the #5 hole are what the 2007 Cubs are missing. I wish Lou would take a look at this cumulative line. Soriano batting 5th over the three previous seasons: 573AB 93R 156H 37Doubles 2Triples 34HRs 107RBI 31SB 2CS .272 .317 .522 .839

Maybe it's just my opinion, but with three weeks left in the season, I don't think it's a particularly good idea to go tinkering around with our very temperamental star player.

Cubs OPS numbers by spot vs Opponents: #1) 859 vs. 681 #2) 766 vs 698 #3) 863 vs 875 #4) 902 vs 846 #5) 700 vs 731 (382 slugging for the Cubs) #6) 730 vs 701 (also 382 slugging) #7) 692 vs 741 (374 slugging) #8) 585 vs 758 (304 slugging) #9) 537 vs 432

it's not really an issue except on the Internet and radio shows. Soriano will bat leadoff the rest of the year and probably the next few seasons.

Wow, Backe with 70 pitchers through 3 innings. It's nice to see this sort of thing from the OTHER team's starter from time to time...

I guess the other thread was cut off. Go TCR!! But in response to Chad's post about Guillen. Let me be the first to say I am shocked that Guillen was reupped. I thought he would have a shot of being let go, before getting an extension. But nothing the White Sox do surprise me though. The had one fluke year, why can't we even do that?

The Pirates and now Astros are RAPING the Cubs of runs with stellar outfield defense. Ugh.

Don't stats say Lee shouldn't have caught that ball?

Didnt the Cubs have a extreme amount of double plays back in 2004 when they blew it

Outstanding work by the bullpen so far this evening. Let's win this one.

I'd rather see sac bunts than double plays. Lou should have had DeRosa lay down a bunt in the 9th too. Runners at second and third and two out would have been better than 6-4-3 to end the inning.

I don't understand this team. They had perfect execution throwing those outs away. How'd they not get any runs out of that?

Johann, you having a cow yet, what with all these sac bunts? _______________________________________________ Haven't watched the game, so no idea. Sac bunts do work sometimes, but not as often as they create unnecessary outs.

We took 10 walks...can't do shit, leave 15 LOB. We give up 1 walk and it kills us. We have to gain 2 games in 18 to win the division.

Darn it

Typical Cubs in extra innings this year, waiting for the other team to score so they can call it a night.

with 20 men getting on base, and only scoring 4 runs...it's not the order of the lineup that's the problem. Everyone, top to bottom, left men on base in clutch situations....everyone. I do question taking Floyd out in a 4-4 game in the 7th just to get a faster runner at first base. Could have used his bat in the 9th and 11th.

mannytrillo, you've got a lot of nerve. With Dusty, we wouldn't even be in this division race.

Don't think we'd be bitching about this if Marquis would pitch like he had a a three run lead. You cannot throw one in the happy zone to the kid hitting .320 when the guy behind him is eleventy years old and hitting ,250. Never should been a Pence triple. What a stupid pitch. Horrible execution.

Agree, but I wonder if Pence hit a mistake. Marquis was doing ok. I am more mad a JJ for not taking at least one strike before going for the grand slam.

Note to self: - Re-read previous note to self about going to bed when the Cubs go into extra innings, because you know it will end badly. The Carlos Lee catch, the bad call on Murton at 2nd base in the 11th, 15 men left on base, no runs after the 3rd inning, JJ swinging on a 2-0 pitch after Lidge has walked 3 in the inning -- what a brutal game to lose. Curse or no, they has about 10 chances to win this, but couldn't. Once JJ had a 2-0 count with the bases loaded against Lidge, I would have had him take 2 strikes -- it was obvious they weren't going to knock in a run with a hit, and Lidge had lost the plate.

the bad call on Murton at 2nd base in the 11th Sorry... but the replays showed pretty clearly that the call was correct. He was out. It was really close, but the ball beat Murton to the base.

Once JJ had a 2-0 count with the bases loaded against Lidge, I would have had him take 2 strikes — it was obvious they weren’t going to knock in a run with a hit First... how was this obvious? Second... on 2-0, you are looking for a specific pitch - typically a fastball in your "zone." Jock got that, hit the ball pretty well, but pretty much right a guy and it got caught. That is baseball.

today can be summed up with one word: Clutch (or lack there of) Bitch about Marquis or Dempty all you want, if these fucks could get one fucking hit in the 1,000,000 chances they did they would have won this fucking game going away. FUCK THIS BULLSHIT!!!! And I swear to God but Just a Girl has totally ruined parachat for me.

"Second… on 2-0, you are looking for a specific pitch - typically a fastball in your “zone.” Jock got that, hit the ball pretty well, but pretty much right a guy and it got caught. That is baseball." You would know better than anyone, that even the best players will still make an out 60 - 65% of the time they put the ball in play. I don't blame Jacque either. At least he a. put wood on the ball and didn't k and b. hit it hard. a few yards either way and we score 3.

Yep, getting hits with people on base is a good thing. I'm going to go apply for Joe Morgan's spot now. What should my home run call be? I think "Holy cow that wasn't a walk" would work.

Some will argue on a 2-0 pitch, it's a pure hitters count and you should swing away....heck, the Astros won on a 2-0 count. In this circumstance, I couldn't disagree more. Lidge had thrown about 50 pitches, and absolutely could not find the strikezone. He is going to do everything to avoid 3 balls, so even with a 2-1 count, it's still a pure hitters count. Leave the bat on your shoulder and hope it falls out of the zone....if it doesn't you still look dead fastball 2-1, and it's the same situation...with the bases loaded, even 2-2 isn't the end of the world. I also think the bunts were the right call in the 7th through 9th inning. With Kendall, you have a slow runner with no power who is a prime DP candidate....it's not like we are giving up a potential home run there and two runs. With Pie is a little more questionable due to his speed and liklihood of avoiding a DP, but he's shown nothing with his bat, so might as well get the runner to 2nd....My big question here is why not get Soto in as a pinch hitter to try to get some power. In my opinion we didn't lose because of bunts or swinging at the wrong pitches...we lost because we didn't put the game out of reach while Backe was in there....we blew way too many chances early, and trusting Marquis to hold down a lead isn't where I lay my chips. I was laughed at for calling that game a devestating loss. While the BP playoff odds don't mean much for reality, I think it does do a good job of showing the importance of every game from here out. Being 1 game behind means we have to gain 2 games over a period of 18 (or 19). That's not an easy task. Cubs chances of winning the division were 50.5%, and likely would have climbed a tiny bit had the Cubs won. Due to the loss, I expect to see in the morning the Cubs around 30-35% in terms of chances to win the division. That's a 15-20% drop due to the result of 1 game. Anytime you can put that much mathematical weight on 1 game, I'll call it a devestating loss.

Yeah, I dont understand JJ on that 2-0 count. Lidge was struggling, tired.... c'mon, just take one strike.... I hate the Astros more than the Cardinals. They just seem to bring out the absolute worst in us.

Ryan Dempster....the Anti-Clutch closer. When you absolutely positevly need to lose a game when you need a win....Ryan Dempster is your man. Just as worthless as Barrett was.

MikeC, you do realize that Dempster pitched a perfect, easy, 10th inning, right? You get to the point in the game with your closer pitching on the road in a tie inning for a 2nd inning...your chances aren't very good of winning no matter who the closer is. I'm down on Dempster and don't have a lot of faith in him, but I can't even remotely blame him for tonight's loss.

I agree with block. Leave Dempster alone on this one. What we got here is,,, a failure... to GET A DAMN HIT!!

Who lost the game AGAIN? Twice in the last week....yeah that was Ryan mouther fucking Dempster. Unless we have 2 closers named Dempster, he still lost the game....he sucks get over it.

Yup, who cares about leaving 15 men on base....who cares that Dempster did his job and gave the Cubs yet another chance to win after a perfect, 4 pitch inning. Who cares that you are basically put in a no win situation forced to pitch two extra innings on the road, where you have zero runs. Nope, it's all your fault. Against the Dodgers, Dempster was brought in to do his job...he was brought in to protect a lead. He failed, he blew it, he sucked. This game was different, entirely and completely different. He had no lead, he had no margin of error...he did the one job that is requested of him on a regular basis, and that's to pitch 1 good inning. Scapegoating Dempster for a game like that is either a result of not actually watching the game, or just a result of typical September irrational bitterness. I'll say it again...I don't trust Dempster these days. I don't think he has good stuff. He was not the reason we lost this game.

…with apologies to Cool Hand Luke. ====== The Cubs after the 3rd inning tried to eat 50 goose-eggs

Cubster, nice. Continuing the metaphor, does this make Carlos Lee or Hunter Pence the man in the mirrored sunglasses? Both of them are absolute Cub-killers.

A distraught Dempster dressed in a hurry and said 11 words while rushing out the door: "I made a stupid pitch. Walked a guy. Lost the game." He seems to make alot of stupid pitches. And i am really getting sick of hearing Dempster repeat over and over how he keeps making stupid pitches to lose games. We get it, you suck.
