Yet another tough righty that Pie has to face. I'm glad Cedeno's starting at least. Here's hoping the Cubs are patient against Volquez and let him make some mistakes. I'm not too optimistic though.

At least Pie is starting in back-to-back games. He needs to play, and I think he should be given awhile in the starting lineup. If he isn't playing here, he should be sent to AAA. It is too early to give up on him.

Losing two out of three in every series has become a favorite of this team's. This offense is just terrible right now. Win two freaking games in a row!

Well, offenses go in slumps, and I wouldn't say Pie, Cedeno and Fontenot could really be called slumping since they never proved they could hit to begin with. What we have to have is good enough pitching to carry the team during those slumps and we do not have that outside of Zambrano and Marmol.

Is the wind blowing out or is our pitching just blowing that badly today?

No Errors so far! All runs are earned! Other than hitting, pitching, fielding and baserunning, the team is hitting on all cylinders right now.

Last time the Cubs lost a game by more han 3 runs: April 17: 9-2. To the Reds. Can we trade the naming rights to Wrigely Field for Votto?

It is normal in the sense that all teams get blown out in long seasons like this. Yes, even the historically great teams got their heads handed to them in some games. Relax, this is a solid team and they will work out of this slump.

Volquez pitching in a blowout, didn't have anyone up in the pen until pitch #114.

Bako has hit 4 in his first 87 AB's this year. This is a guy who only had 15 HR in his first 10 years in the majors. I can only assume that the crack Reds broadcast team has already hinted that he's pumping steroids.... the way they did for Soto. But like they said, sometimes a hitter doesn't develop his power until he's around 28.... oops, Bako is 35.

Pirates. We need more games against the Pirates. Yeesh -- 7 walks and no runs. At least htey are still showing patience, which is a good sign.

It really has to make you question wether this team is the best in the division. I understand going through loosing streaks. But we're getting beat by bad teams.

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

The level of conversation on this site is intelligent, reasoned and informative. Miles ahead of other Cub sites.

one batted ball in play (F-9 by Stevens)
    one walk (B. Davis)

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    JAXON WIGGINS
    ONE INNING:
    25 pitches (11 strikes)
    no batted balls in play
two walks (Suriel and J. Diaz)
three strikeouts (Carico, Lubo, and Escobar - all three swinging)
    six swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    14 called balls
    one WP

    ETHAN ROBERTS
    ONE INNING

    no strikeouts
    no swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    eight called balls
    one WP

Mat Peters was bumped by Justin Steele from his scheduled game work at Giants, so he threw two innings of "live" BP with Wiggins & Roberts.

    MAT PETERS
    TWO INNINGS
    44 pitches (23 strikes)
    five batted balls in play (F-7, L-7, F-7, G-6, G-3)

    nine called strikes
    21 called balls
    three WP

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
