Gameday Open Thread/Dbacks @ Cubs & Opening Day Starter News

Carlos Zambrano gets his first start of the spring, the Diamondbacks send Dan Haren out to begin the game.

Muskat says Lou is deciding between Zambrano or Dempster for the Opening Day start versus the Houston Astros.

A's sign Orlando Cabrera $4M x1. WSux get draft choice but if I recall correctly the A's 1st rounder is protected so a 2nd round plus sandwich pick. Please correct me if that's not right, but I think it's similar to the Juan Cruz draft implications.

A's have the 13th pick, so it's protected.

That is correct. Pick between rounds 1/2 "sandwich" and A's 2nd rounder. Should be picks between 40 and 60

lineup per mlb boxscore:

Soriano, Miles, DLee, Hoffpauir (RF), ARam, Fontenot, KHill, Gathright, Z

That lineup sux

Starting the year off right!

lineup cloud: RSRLRLRLS

Alright, I'll knock it off, but you have to admit, it's less annoying than talking politics.

That's the easiest word cloud to read I've ever seen. They all need to be more like that.

Hawkins replacing Joe Nathan on Team USA...

Just trying to imagine in what situation the U.S. will actively attempt to blow a save. Drawing a blank.

Hawkins couldn't even convert a save pitching against Team Gaza Strip.

And he thought the Wrigley crowd was tough?

La-T-Roy? Really? This just proves that the USA contingent doesn't want to win the WBC, if the "good" squads don't even set up to win, then what the hell? Hopefully La-T-Roy only sees time when we're up by 5 in the last 1-2 innings.

What about Lidge? Isn't he American?

a U.S American

lol {removed}

I ain't going there again.

Lidge has been dealing with shoulder stiffness during Phillies camp, per Rotoworld the other day.

Z 1-2-3 inning, two K's

Go Z

Also, Scott Eyre has fallen on some financial "Hard Times"

Beaten Dead Horse - meet The Dr. Aaron "3/44" B

I think I missed the beginning of this meme. Just kinda started happening, didn't it?

Nope. For about a week running! lol

Is it possible that Bobby Scales will emerge as the 25th man? I know the dude ain't no spring chicken (31), but his career minor league numbers are:

3227 ABs, 285/376/430 (806)

And the last two seasons at Iowa (combined):

819 ABs, 306/386/485 (871), with a BB/K ratio of 109/184.

Plus he can play 2B, 3B, and OF.

Makes as much sense as Luis Rivas and (in my opinion) Joey Gathright.

1 IP, 5 ER including a 3-R blast to Chris Snyder...

he also hit 2 batters and gave up a double to Tony Clark.

No mustard and stale Slyders = the new Atkins diet

Clever. A+

Guzman gives up 3 ER in an 1 IP

From the box score...

WP: Kadokura 2.

Really? Bleh.

Something tells me Kadokura doesn't throw the Terminator.

Ha, yea, I just wanted a link with the song for effect.

dental plan.

Lisa needs braces.

dental plan.

the fuck?

Watching MLB tonight on MLB TV...2 things.

1- When they go onto the "field" in the studio the hosts Harold Reynolds and Joe Migrane put on sweat suits to show plays or baseball practice. They look like Heaven's Gates members. Or possibly garbagemen from the future, like in 30 years.'s_Gate_(cult)

2- Joe Migrane is the living form of Col Bud Manstrong from the Venture Brothers, voice and look. Eeerie.

  • Reading between the lines on some of his comments he seems to know his longish swing doesn't play well with a man on third and two outs, and two strikes on him. I doubt a playoff adjustment is happening, just something he'll need to figure out next year. I have this odd feeling he will.

Bryant leads NL rookies in HRs (26), RBIs (99), 2B (31) and runs (86). Last rookie to reach 26 HR, 99 RBI, 31 2bs, 86 runs and 74 BBs?

  • Surprised and bummed that Mark Buehrle is retiring. One of my all-time favorite pitchers. I think he could pitch for 5 more years.

  • Probably going to a bar/restaurant with TBS. Cord-cutting is so over-rated.

  • Thanks for the update on Underwood.

  • I know, man. What a season. 3rd best record in all of baseball, good enough to have won any division other than the one there in.

With a win tomorrow, the Cubs will match their 2008 record. Bad omen, I know. If they do win, the most recent year in which the Cubs will have won more games would be 1945 (98-56), the last time they went to the World Series.

    I'll take that omen instead...

  • "oh yeah, and get the fuck off my lawn. :D"

Ok, now that was funny. :)

  • KB 0-5 with 8 LOB. Really? He is torturing me with 99 RBI. He is also a very different hitter at home vs. road. I suspect most young hitters are.

  • Greinke still in for the 8th. 3 up, 3 down. After 8. 108 pitches, ERA still at 1.66 according to mlb boxscore and he's in line for a 19th win.

  • Greinke 95 pitches through 7. Gives up one run (solo HR to Hedges). ERA at 1.66. Doubt that they will let him give up 5 runs in the 8th.

    Dodgers ahead 2-1.

  • 96 wins with one game to go. Who woulda thunk it.

Cubs 96 wins have clinched a better record than any AL team and the NL West/East division winners too.

  • cubs win, pirates lose...

  • the curse is now yours.

  • cog a HR away from the cycle after a single in the 6th.

  • Hendricks: 15 up, 15 down.

  • he strongly separates his post-playing career from his playing career, though he loves to visit the barrier of player and fan. many ex-players don't put up this barrier.

he's not interested in going back to the clubhouse or pretty much anything field/game related, but he'll grab a ticket and observe with the fans and visit ex players on "neutral" ground. he's written 3 pieces for the new yorker and other pieces elsewhere. i remember one photo/bio piece he did, but don't remember where i read it (years ago).
