I Heard the Yanks Have a New Park—Is It True?

Strange times in the news business—I figured there would be all sorts of coverage about the new Yankee Stadium, where the Cubs will conclude their Spring Training schedule tonight and Saturday afternoon. But no, not a peep, not a detail anywhere. It's like no one is paying attention to the first-ever Major League game in that billion dollar edifice. For all anyone would know, the Yanks are still going to be playing in the old park across the street.

Among the saturation coverage of the new yard, I found this wonderful interactive panorama on the New York Times site. It's like being there, without having to scramble for personal space with the fat guy in the Thurman Munson jersey spilling over the seat next to you. (There's a similar interactive panorama for the Mets' new park as well.)

Speaking of strange times in the news business, Ed Sherman of Crain's reports that the Daily Herald will no longer be footing the bill for sending their reporters on the road to cover the Cubs and Sox. Tough break for Bruce Miles and every discerning Cubs fan who enjoys reading him.

Paul Sullivan recaps...I'm thrilled.

Sun-Times just went bankrupt, right?

Yes, though they've been creatively bankrupt for many years.

maybe we should take a TCR collection up and see if Bruce will recap the games for us?

I might be stating the obvious, but juxtaposed... I'd probably prefer Transmission's recaps over Bruce's.

we should take a collection so Transmission can parachat from the game? seems like an unwise use of resources....

Wanna buy the Sun Times... it's at 2 cents a share

bleeding ulcer...

Ouch. Could be worse, I guess; Could be anal fissure. Is it racist that as soon as Ichiro was placed on the DL I thought of a Kaz Matsui injury?

lol, yeah, that's racist. It's funny, though, so it doesn't count.

Go figure when I finally get Ichiro on my fantasy team, he develops an ulcer. What a puss.

I'll loan you Fred Lewis for Kuroda since you don't have a CF-eligible player now. Then we can trade back when Ichiro comes off the DL. Let me know if that interests you.

Where'd you get this information from? thecubreporter.com 6 hours previously?

The Seattle Times baseball reporter, LARRY STONE, says the Cubs will win it all this year

I take all my MLB predictions from a city that hasn't won a major professional championship. Seattle Times predictions < Red Times jokes

That's an irresponsible prediction, imo. You can kind of predict who might make it to the playoffs... to an extent... but once in the playoffs you need a measure of luck Pat Burrell.

apparently not released...

apologies for passing along the info and all the puppies that were harmed along the way.

Funny story...Steve had it on Inside the Ivy yesterday and Latham's family freaked out...whoops.

awesome. haha.

he gets good scoops regardless of this flub, though.

yeah that was unfortunate, said two players told him Latham was cut and neither of them saw Latham in Arizona, but apparently not the case. Maybe there was a minor injury or family issues and he was delayed or something.

As I said, he's tipped me on other stuff that all turned out to be true...oh well.

Headed up to the Bronx for tonight's game. Let's hope the rain hold off...

Classic Cubs from 1991 on MLB Network right now. My namesake just had a go-ahead RBI single. Hawk's at the plate right now with the bases juiced.

Edit: Grand Slam, Andre Dawson. Sweet.

Hope no one else watched that game. Cubs blew a 5 run lead in the bottom of the 11th to the Pirates, thanks in part to a SUPER skinny Barry Bonds.

If anyone is confused by the term, "Cubbery", simply show them a tape of that game. Holy shit what a debacle.

New yankees stadium...still have obstructed view seats...

I'm sure i'll get "scott eyre is broke" but who cares, thought it was interesting.

what an unfortunate blog name.

joe torre's love affair with proctor is a mystery to all.

Parachat before the rain shows up...

looks like MLB and Yahoo teamed up and can track the players on your fantasy team while watching the game with the new player. They had a tracker with MLB Mosaic, but you had to manually adjust the players.

YES irritates me by teasing a message from Fox Business later in the game. They then make up for it by showing Joey Gathright jumping over a car.

damn terrorist hand bumps...

  • CUBBIES-4-EVER: It's not unusual for a PTBNL to be selected after the Rule 5 Draft from the list of Rule 5 eligible players who wee not selected. That way, a club gets a player they like (maybe somebody like OF Jeffrey Baez) without the cumbersome Rule 5 roster restrictions that go with a Rule 5 Draft pick.

  • Clayton Richard is absolutely, positively NOT a free-agent. He is under club control through the 2016 season.

  • Haren was 4-2 with a 4.01 ERA with the Cubs. Seems like he worked out just as expected.

  • Did they ever say or who the PTBNL or cash decision on Rodney was or who was the PTBNL in the Austin Jackson deal was yet? Neither was worth whatever they gave up. Cahill and Richard were the only two good "deadline" deals they made. Hunter (given Lake was the odd man out by far and taking up a roster spot) and Haren weren't worth it.

  • MLB.com says he is, cubs.com site says he's a Cub, great cooperation between the 2 sites, weird

  • The drafting of Shea at #1 was a sign of things to come -- an undersized white linebacker who's not particularly fast; lets make him an NFL defensive end! Just idiotic. When the best thing you can say about your #1 pick is that he has a "high motor", that's a problem...that's what you should say about late-round picks.

  • Not AZ PHIL but after being DFA'd by the Cubs (after they got him from the Pirates in the "I get a chance in the Majors clause"), the Cubs re-signed him for the remainder of the season. I do not believe service time is an issue for him, so he is eligible to opt for Major League Free Agency - which he is doing and the Cubs or someone else will sign him to an MLB deal. AZ PHIL please correct this if you see fit - but that is the most current info that I'm aware of.

  • To also be fair to Emery, wtf do you draft Shea McLellin as a #1, Jonathan Bostic in the same draft, let Peppers go in lieu of signing Jared Shit-Head, Brandon Hardin, Evan Rodriguez, Isiah Frey, on and on...

I will give him credit for Kyle Long - who is like my favorite player (what does THAT say about the team - but he did throw in the 90's as a former pitcher), and Jeffrey.

  • Geo Soto leaves the WSux and signs with the Angels who lost Chris Ianetta to the Mariners.

Freed... The Angels also promoted Bobby Scales from director of player development to special assistant

  • AZ PHIL- Is Clayton Richard a free agent or not? One site I see he is, on another no. MLB has him listed as a free agent, Cot's contracts says he is a FA, baseball-reference says he's not, but Cubs have him on active roster. I know that he is just short of MLB 6 years service by just like 15 days, but that doesn't always matter.

  • Except that he gave up Russell and McKinney for a half-season of Hammel...

  • Beane cam at least point and laugh at Hammel.

  • The genius Angelo traded Olsen at Martzs request

  • Maybe Theo will sign Shark just so he can call Billy Beane and say: "Let's see...Russell? Check. McKinney? Check. Hammel? Check. Ninja? Check. Any other deals?"

  • To be fair to Emery and Trestman the foreshadowing of last year started happening well before them with the failure or mismanaging of multiple draft classes forcing the team to overspend in a free agency market that is even worse than baseball. Kyle Long seems like a good pick but they traded away another good one in Olson because of Martz's stupidity and inability to change his offense to fit the team talent.

  • HAGSAG: I think Domonic Brown does fit the criteria of a reclamation project, but unless he is willing to accept a minor league contract with an NRI to Spring Training, I don't think the Cubs would be interested given where the Cubs are right now. A couple of years ago? Yes. But probably not now.

Brown would be better-off going to a club that is rebuilding and re-establish his value there, like Chris Coghlan did with the Cubs. And if he can re-establish his value, he could get traded to a contender at the trade deadline and take it from there.
