Friday Free-For-All

The flow of rumors is down to a drip as we near the Christmas break. Yet the Cubs are without a first basemen or much of a starting staff and still employ Carlos Zambrano and Alfonso Soriano. There is still work to be done JedStein.

- Early in the day yesterday, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reported that "there were signs today (I can't say precisely what) to indicate the Cubs are stepping up their pursuit of Prince Fielder." Four hours later Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, claimed the "Cubs are not major players for Prince Fielder. Not ready to spend big." I hate when my baseless rumors contradict. WHO AM I TO BELIEVE?!?!?!?!

If there's any truth to Cafardo's report, hard to see the Cubs being in on Yu Darvish either. One recent rumor regarding Pince Fielder was that he was seeking a 10-year deal, which after seeing Albert Pujols get one and being younger makes sense to ask. Whether anyone will give it to him is the real story, but it wouldn't be the worst idea for an A.L. team. For the Cubs or any other N.L. team, that would be a hard one to justify unless there's something we don't know about the DH coming to both leagues, but unlikely that could even happen before the newest CBA ends in 5 years. Otherwise, you would think the Cubs would want some sort of guarantees for the later years (maybe vesting options) or to front-load the contract so to make Fielder easier to move on the back-end of the deal if they decide to take that plunge.

- Speaking of Darvish, we do know the Cubs submitted a bid and that the Rangers, Blue Jays and Yankees did as well and there may be a few more teams involved. One rumor was that one of the bids was north of $50M and another rumor was that the Blue Jays offer was "sky high". It appears we won't know the winner until Tuesday and then it's still 30 days for the a contract to be negotiated with Darvish. I have to say I'm a bit skeptical about throwing $100M at Darvish (posting fee and 6 year contract). Hopefully I'm overestimating the cost, but paying nearly $17M a year on average doesn't sound like it's really building from the ground up and you always have to worry about a pitcher's arm blowing out. On top of that, I don't know how sure you can be that Darvish will be as good as advertised. I think after a decade and a half of Japanese players coming over the majors, it's pretty clear there's a big difference in the level of competition. Maybe Darvish bucks that trend and can make as much as an impact as Ichiro, but I'd sure worry he ends up more like Dice-K. That wouldn't be terrible, but it would be disappointing.

Enjoy the weekend!

why would the owners do it? costs them more money...

more runs, more fans?
Lets Cubs, Mets, Dodgers spend on bats like their AL counter parts.

Hell, then can even field 8 of those. We gotta make room another one?!

I'm still waiting for designated shooters in basketball. They can just stay at one end of the court when their teams on defense. Maybe another guy can play defense for him at the opposite end.

Obviously you haven't seen Carlos Boozer's Bulls career.

Lulz...that's kind of my point. There are already guys who are basicall DS's. Might as well make it official.

dear don...can you wait til football season is over til you do this? football vs. baseball manliness arguments are hard enough without this...

btw, it's kinda crazy (especially pitchers) how many do yoga or ballet to stay flexible and quick. ...better than doing drugs for an advantage at least...

dejesus/barney-dewitt-baker/castro/?? (hopefully worthy of that slot)/byrd/stewart/soriano/soto...

2nd and 3rd counting on a miracle...or at least average production. byrd/soriano/soto performances could vary widely...and all 3 need to click at least "average"...and someone really needs to step up out of that group.

not really worried about castro...and dejesus has to get on base and keep his legs healthy...he should be able to handle that.

FWIW Z is no longer on the depth chart at I know that Muskat is not EpHoy, but until Z is in camp, I'm assuming he's not coming back. I think the Cubs are willing to eat almost every dollar to make him go away, and I don't think that thought changed with regimes.

oh yeah, the whole post is pretty much just an "educated guess" until the team actually breaks and/or a big name signs and there's little chance of competition for a slot.

time is running out, but they could get in on a number of lineup/rotation shaking pickups...or losses if they find a taker for garza.

i was just bored and running out a "as it stands" and who might slot where based on what the cubs are supposedly looking and what they have.

whole thing could get really weird if they decide they need a shiny, new cuban OF'r...about the only thing they're still strongly linked to without someone else saying/writing "no way."

I'm really pissed that the Cubs haven't used their vast fortunes to pick up Fielder. I also don't want them to hand out large contracts that might end up crippling them. What, those are mutually exclusive? Fuck the Cubs for making my offseason boring thus far. Entertain me, you fuckers!

The Cubs can afford to sign anyone you want if you'll just buy out the remaining stock of these Fukudome jerseys from

Stl related tweet...Steve Hensen, Yahoo Sports

The Cardinals are in discussions to sign Coco Crisp to play CF and bat at the top of the order. Jon Jay wld move to RF with Craig injured.

All the more reason for Theo to get his ass moving and sign Crisp first. I wouldn't mind an OF from left to right of Byrd, Crisp, and DeJesus. At least they could catch or run down what's hit to them and get on base better than last year's OF. The pitching staff might appreciate outfielders who know how to take a decent route to the ball.

Two ex-Royals in the OF, yeah, that's the ticket to the World Series.

Like Jermaine Dye or Johnny Damon?

Lol...which of these is not like the other?
Damon: .286/.353/.435, 2 AS games
Dye:.274/.338/.488, 2 AS, 1 top 5 MVP
DeJesus:.284/.356/.421 0 AS, 0 MVP votes

All Star appearances are the definitive measure of a player, after all

**Lol...which of these is not like **

Jermaine Dye?

more specifically then?
Damon has 200 HR's and 1100 RBIS, and 400 steals
Dye has 325 HR's and 1072 RBI
DeJesus has 71 HR, 436 RBI, and is 51/97 steals

DeJesus is not on the same level as Dye and Damon.

DeJesus is not on the same level as Dye and Damon.

Certainly. Just having fun with the broad brush that ex-Royal OFs are anathema to winning a WS. Though for Carlos Beltran...

Yu disappointed? Rangers get him, $52MM. At least the Cubs won't have to face him if he's as good as advertised. On to the Coco Crisp talk, yay!

$100 million+ for a guy that has never thrown a single pitch at the MLB level? I just don't see it. It wouldn't surprise me if Yu ends up pitching in Japan again this year.

after giving up 50m for "nothing" they'll throw him 50-75m for 5-6 years.

Welp, I guess that takes the Rangers out of the Fielder sweepstakes... Looks like Boras just got burned on the turn card and now it's down to the Cubs and M's... Prince may just prefer the Cubs more enough to take a 5-6 year deal...

According to @alexspeier, Cubs hired area scout Matt Dorey from Sox, promoted him to cross-checker

GordonEdes Gordon Edes
Sox and Cubs have agreed, according to one MLB source, that Theo will not be allowed to hire anyone else from Red Sox for 3 years

matt dorey? the boys-club really is putting the band back together.

i dont wanna get into it, but he's pretty f'n young and new to scouting to be a national cross-checker.

he must be a hell of a hotshot.

I know I'm behind the times on this, but why has "Tebowing" become such a big thing? Haven't Carlos Zambrano and various other baseball players been doing this for approximately forever?

It honestly wouldn't be so big had planking not been around. It's just a variation of that dumb sensation.

ESPN did not decide to drop it's last piece of integrity to cover Z 24 hours helped it.

  • AZ PHIL- Is Clayton Richard a free agent or not? One site I see he is, on another no. MLB has him listed as a free agent, Cot's contracts says he is a FA, baseball-reference says he's not, but Cubs have him on active roster. I know that he is just short of MLB 6 years service by just like 15 days, but that doesn't always matter.

  • Except that he gave up Russell and McKinney for a half-season of Hammel...

  • Beane cam at least point and laugh at Hammel.

  • The genius Angelo traded Olsen at Martzs request

  • Maybe Theo will sign Shark just so he can call Billy Beane and say: "Let's see...Russell? Check. McKinney? Check. Hammel? Check. Ninja? Check. Any other deals?"

  • To be fair to Emery and Trestman the foreshadowing of last year started happening well before them with the failure or mismanaging of multiple draft classes forcing the team to overspend in a free agency market that is even worse than baseball. Kyle Long seems like a good pick but they traded away another good one in Olson because of Martz's stupidity and inability to change his offense to fit the team talent.

  • HAGSAG: I think Domonic Brown does fit the criteria of a reclamation project, but unless he is willing to accept a minor league contract with an NRI to Spring Training, I don't think the Cubs would be interested given where the Cubs are right now. A couple of years ago? Yes. But probably not now.

Brown would be better-off going to a club that is rebuilding and re-establish his value there, like Chris Coghlan did with the Cubs. And if he can re-establish his value, he could get traded to a contender at the trade deadline and take it from there.

  • "they just fade away"

(Except in the cases of no-fade lefties like Moyer, Orosco and Rich Hill.)

  • Amazing to me how quickly it fell apart under Trestman. Year 1, they were a Chris Conte brain fart away from making the playoffs. Year 2 -- coach, staff and GM all fired.

  • I am sure Jonathon Mota will be signed next.

  • AZ Phil, what is your thoughts on Domonic Brown as a reclamation project?

  • He also played LF in deference to Curtis Granderson.

Meh... other moves to make...hope to see a move or two soon.

  • I haven't seen much Bears football this year - difficult to watch the games out here, but the game I saw the week before I was watching in shock as I saw them actually make tackles. And Cutler has looked really good, too.

I guess people can quibble about play calling, but the team I saw is way more than 50% better coached (my only very minor disagreement with your comment).

Under Trestman, the team didn't do anything right. This team played like a well coached team when I saw them play the Rams.

  • "What is sometimes overlooked about Vogelbach because of his "bad body" and because he has struggled so much defensively is that he is a hard worker, has a great attitude, loves to play the game, and is very well-liked by his teammates, and while that may not seem important, teams do actually value stuff like that. "

As well they should. Replace a word here and there and you are describing any worker someone would hire.
