Angels/Cubs Rally to Tie Royals at Papago

Andrew Daniel (Angels) belted an RBI double in the 2nd inning and a two-run double in the 6th, Charcer Burks (Cubs) walked and scored in the 6th and drilled a game-tying RBI single with two outs in the top of the 9th, and RHP James Pugliese (Cubs) hurled three innings of one-hit ball with six strikeouts (including the last five batters he faced) in relief, as the Angels/Cubs co-op squad rallied to tie the Royals 5-5 in AZ Advanced Instructional League action this morning on Field #2 at the Papago Sports Complex in Phoenix, AZ. 

The game was called by mutual agreement after nine innings of play. 

Duane Underwood Jr got the start for the Angels/Cubs, and after retiring six of the first seven men he faced in his first two innings (K, K, 6-3, K, 2B, K, F-8), the 21-year old right-hander allowed three runs on five hits and a walk (and a WP) in the third and fourth innings. He struck out five over the course of his outing (all five K-swinging), with four of the punch-outs being recorded in the first two innings.

Az Phil, looking at the Myrtle Beach starting staff from this year, I see eight pretty good pitchers. Can you rank them? It looks like some will be bullpen arms.

HAGSAG: I doubt that all of the starting pitchers who finished the season at Myrtle Beach will get promoted to Tennessee at the start of the 2016 season, so it probably wouldn't be necessary to move any of them to the bullpen (at least not right away).  

I actually wouldn't be all that surprised if Pierce Johnson, Rob Zastryzny, and Ryan Williams begin the 2016 season back at Tennessee, with a promotion to AAA only when the pitcher gets on a rioll at AA. 

That could keep all of the Myrtle Beach starters except two back at Hi-A to start the season.

If I had i guess which two of the 2015 Myrtle Beach starters will be at Tennessee at the start of next season, I would say probably Tyler Skulina and either Daury Torrez or Jonathan Martinez, although the others (Underwood, Tseng, Blackburn, Markey, and Null) could  get moved-up within a relatively short period of time (based upon each pitcher's performance at Minor League Camp and then at Myrtle Beach the first month).

    it's a "for cash considerations" trade.

    cooper is a 1st/DH only type, but that's practically a freebie for BOS.  i was expecting some AAA fodder gamble on the same level rather than cash.  he showed up decent in spring + his limited time with the cubs.

    given BOS's extreme need for a 1st, this is a steal for them.

    I think it’s a bit of a chicken or egg scenario. Did they make these trades because they saw what was coming and weren’t impressed and knew to keep up with the demand for constant winning thru had to acquire impact players? Or did those additions cause a failure of resource allocation elsewhere.

    In addition, the whole they traded to acquire a star, that’s precisely what organizations should do if they feel they’re a piece away. Keep developing talent, but sometimes you need to supplement that talent. It’s what the best run organizations do. Atlanta does it. Houston in their prime run did it. Nationals during their prime run did it. Of course dodgers did it. Boston and Philadelphia too. Hell, the Cubs did it when they won. There’s no team that has had sustained success that has solely relied on their own internal development. It just doesn’t happen. I wouldn’t fault St Louis for that. What I suspect happened is in that 2020 season, in an effort to save money, they cut budget from developing and scouting. Or maybe the wrong guys got poached by other orgs. Regardless, blaming the acquisition of two of the best players of their generation for peanuts, seems off base to me.

    I do agree that we’ve more or less come to the same conclusion, but our paths to that conclusion contain almost no crossover. I think we can also agree that seeing the cardinals struggle brings a warmth to our hearts.

    Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.
