Cardinals @ Cubs: Weaver vs Hendricks (Game 115)

This streak goes to 11. STL (60-56): RHP Luke Weaver (0-0, 0.00) CHC (73-41): RHP Kyle Hendricks (11-7, 2.17) First pitch: 1:20pmCST Hendricks continued his excellent season by completing the sweep and winning in Oakland on Sunday (7.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB). He lost to the Cardinals at Busch in April, giving up 4 ER over 5.1 innings. These Cards are 27-87 (.310) against him. Carpenter is 6-13 with a HR. Weaver, the 22y/o 2014 first-round pick from Florida State University, is the Cardinals’ number 2 prospect. He made one start at AAA-Memphis (6 IP, 0 ER), after going 6-3 with a 1.40 at AA-Springfield this season. Welcome to the Big Leagues, kid. Leake (8-9, 4.79) versus Lackey (9-7, 3.56) tomorrow at 7:08pmCST—oof!--to end the series. Go Cubs!

Scouting Report: Weaver by no means has prototypical starter size. He’s listed at 6-foot-2 but is likely an inch or two shorter than that, and calling him slim is an understatement. That being said, he does have excellent arm-strength, and his fastball is plus thanks to his ability to get it into the 92-94 mph range with the occasional tick up along with late life. He also has a quick arm, and that arm speed helps make his change a plus offering, with occasional flashes up to plus-plus. Those two pitches make Weaver intriguing. His breaking balls, however, leave scouts wanting. He will throw both a slider and curve, but neither pitch flashes more than 45-grade on a consistent basis, and they will also run into each other. At some point the Cardinals may need to tell Weaver to scratch one and focus on developing either the curve or the slider (probably the slider) into a big-league pitch. ...The upside is a mid-rotation guy because of the command, but the floor is lower than it should be for someone who can throw this many strikes. —Christopher Crawford

Who do you all think the September call ups will be? Patton, Almora, Candelario, Kawasaki, and LaStella (if he reports to AAA) should all be locks. I would like to see Rivero come up (he would have to get his contract selected). Concepcion has fell apart since he came back down. Alvarez ERA is 9.82 in AA. Pierce Johnson has been awful. Soto hasn't been very good, but has been a little bit better of late. Acevedo is injured. Also, Clayton Richard started for the Padres today and Zack Greinke gave up 9 ER in 1.2 IP. What happened to him? And I just read something that the Marlins are reaching out to A-Rod due to Stanton being out for the year. Marlins are bound for a collapse with Stanton done for the year and #2 starter (Conley) now on the DL.

Interesting trying to define the Cubs "starting lineup". They have 3 different starting catchers, depending on the pitcher, with Bryant, Contreras, Baez and Zobrist moving around depending on the pitcher. Now, with Soler looking good and having been a beast in the playoffs last year, I assume they want to get him in the lineup somewhat regularly. I wonder if they will sit Heyward against lefties more, or give Dex more days off?

wow...j.papelbon was told he was going to be DFA'd, so him (or his agent) went running to the press to say he's demanding to be released. his legend continues to impress. is that the right word? impress? no? okay.

7ip 5h 0bb 12k...100 pitches through 7 and out of the game. hendricks is good as throwing basesballs. 2.19 era 1.01 whip

First glimpse of the "bad CJ" we have seen. Back-to-back 4 pitch walks to force in a run. Doesn't have it today. Lack of Strop/Rondon really hurt today.

Yeah I didn't get this signing from the beginning. The only thing he supposedly offered was the ground ball thing and yet both Montgomery and Strop had better GB%s than him. His ERA sucked and we are just seeing more of that. Hopefully we can move on quickly from him though I hope the replacement isn't Papelbon.

Classic baseball -- Cubs score 13 runs yesterday, Double-A rookie on the mound, and the offense does nothing. Bummer for Hendricks on the 2-out HR to tie it. He needs more wins.

RALLY! ...nevermind. DFA everyone.

I got carried away in the excitement of a Jason Heyward hit. DP grounder that the pitcher deflected, then stupidly threw away while lying on his belly. Jason's on fire!

The really, really scary thing is....he is getting progressively worse. July was his worst month at .217/.291, then we hit August: .188/.212 in 32 AB. Post All-Star, he is slashing a truly incredible .167/.220 in 84 AB. I don't see how he can start in the playoffs if this keeps up (or gets even worse -- last 7 days: .125/.176). Can't afford to have an automatic out (and likely DP if there is a runner on first) against good pitchers and good teams. I feel bad for the guy, but this is just ridiculous.

it's a "for cash considerations" trade.

cooper is a 1st/DH only type, but that's practically a freebie for BOS.  i was expecting some AAA fodder gamble on the same level rather than cash.  he showed up decent in spring + his limited time with the cubs.

given BOS's extreme need for a 1st, this is a steal for them.

Red Sox get G Cooper, I doubt if the Cubs get anything in terms of personnel.

An excellent Earl Weaver chain smoking reference.

I think it’s a bit of a chicken or egg scenario. Did they make these trades because they saw what was coming and weren’t impressed and knew to keep up with the demand for constant winning thru had to acquire impact players? Or did those additions cause a failure of resource allocation elsewhere.

In addition, the whole they traded to acquire a star, that’s precisely what organizations should do if they feel they’re a piece away. Keep developing talent, but sometimes you need to supplement that talent. It’s what the best run organizations do. Atlanta does it. Houston in their prime run did it. Nationals during their prime run did it. Of course dodgers did it. Boston and Philadelphia too. Hell, the Cubs did it when they won. There’s no team that has had sustained success that has solely relied on their own internal development. It just doesn’t happen. I wouldn’t fault St Louis for that. What I suspect happened is in that 2020 season, in an effort to save money, they cut budget from developing and scouting. Or maybe the wrong guys got poached by other orgs. Regardless, blaming the acquisition of two of the best players of their generation for peanuts, seems off base to me.

I do agree that we’ve more or less come to the same conclusion, but our paths to that conclusion contain almost no crossover. I think we can also agree that seeing the cardinals struggle brings a warmth to our hearts.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.
