    Sure.

I'd say just standard OPS. Dunn will out OPS Pena this year 2011 and Cubs 1st baseman in 2012 and 2013. Deal?

let the next losing streak begin tomorrow!!!

The game today is how Hendry must have perceived this team being a contender. We would get good starting pitching (and he felt he could count on Z, Demp, Garza for good starts, Wells to develop more consistency and Cashner's development giving better than a normal #5) and get the ball to Marshall, Wood and Marmol. We would get some HRs from Aramis and Pena and some other production from the rest of the lineup. A terrible plan, as it turns out, but today was evidence that this projection can occur.

    Hey Hey! Cubs Win!

They have to protect Campananana. If he hits the DL, they call up Zeke DeVoss.

    I like this post.

Just kidding, of course... I've never heard of any of these douchebags.

I'm really glad they got Austin Urban... I was hoping he'd fall to the Cubs.

In terms of unsignable, here is Baseball America's description of our 47th round pick. "David Ernst capped his high school career by throwing a no-hitter in the North Dakota Class A championship game. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound righthander usually pitches at 85-88 mph, though he did touch 91 in his first outing this spring. His parents are wealthy and he's a good student, so there's virtually no chance he can be lured away from attending North Dakota State."

I expect Quade thought being a MLB manager would be more fun than this. "I can't remember the last time I was excited guys going out on rehab," Cubs manager Mike Quade said. "I've got to be honest, [I am]." http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=6640708

I agree there is a limit and some kids are unsignable - Jacquez and Maltos-Garcia may both envision themselves as first round picks in a few years and be willing to gamble on getting multi-million dollar contracts. But I would be willing to put more on the table for players. And the Cubs have done it in the past (albeit not always successfully) -- McNutt got $100k, Huseby and Logan Watkins both received well-above slot, I believe. For someone like Jacquez, I would be willing to go up to around $1-1.3mm. This is all under the assumption that the description of his raw stuff is accurate and our scouts concur. If so, adding players like Jacquez and Maltos-Garcia could make this draft exceptional if Baez and Vogelbach (and others) develop. And the risk, relative to amounts spent by baseball teams each year, is minimal.

Wow. Kerry Wood in to start the 7th. Amazing. Montanez now in LF, batting 9th, with the pitcher in the 6th hole. Snyder didn't show snot today with the bat.

During high school baseball tryouts of my senior season, they did a drill where the first basemen would throw a "grounder" to guys at third, who would then field it and throw back to first. One of my friends fielded it, then did a crow's hop throw to first, just in case anyone was cofused about what position he should be playing. That reminds me a lot of Blake DeWitt batting #3 today.

It still comes down to money. Say the kid won't sign for less than $4 million - do you still offer it to him?

takes a balk to get Fukudome home this time from third, once again there with less than 2 outs.

    OPS+ sounds good.

This is the opportunity I think teams should seize upon. Throw extra money at players like Jacquez and see what happens. A good percentage of the time, the player will not reach their potential. But if they do, you got a quality player in the late rounds for a minimal amount compared to their actual worth. I hope they sign Scott, Jacquez, Maples, Urban, Maltos-Garcia, Jensen and Lindgren (along with relievers like Zych and others...not saying these should be the only ones signed). All of them appear to have potential to be decent prospects and could make this an extremely special draft on the pitching side considering our first three picks were hitters.

may I suggest that you two define exactly what those #'s are now so there's no argument later. nice odds for Neal though, aaronb needs to 3 things to go his way to win.

I will not take that bet. Our opening day starter, very briefly, has his ERA in the 5's! Let's party!
