Cubs 2015 Extended Spring Training Full Speed Ahead

A number of players arrived at Extended Spring Training from the Cubs Dominican Academy and from Venezuela this past weekend, one player has been released, and yet another position player is making the move to pitcher, as the Cubs Extended Spring Training roster is being finalized.

Among the new-arrivals at the Under Armour Performance Center at Mesa CubTown are CF Roberto Caro, C Yohan Matos, OF-1B Jose Paniagua, and OF Jenner Emeterio from the Dominican Academy, and RHP Enrique de los Rios, 3B Wladimir Galindo, 2B Danny Gutierrez, and SS Rafael Narea from Venezuela.

The only pitcher from the group (additional Latin American pitchers are expected to arrive shortly), 19-year old de los Rios was one of the VSL Cubs rotation starters in 2014. He put up a 3.76 ERA and 1.24 WHIP, was second on the team in strikeouts, and walked only nine in 67 innings. This is his third season in the Cubs organization.

Now 21, the speedy switch-hitting Caro was at Extended Spring Training at Fitch Park as a 19-year old in 2013, but he was unable to win a job with the AZL Cubs at that time and was sent back to the DSL Cubs. He spent the balance of the 2013 season and all of last season at the Cubs Dominican Academy, where he hit 289/416/472 with a team-leading 15 triples, 48 walks, and 35 SB (7 CS) with the DSL Cubs.

Paniagua and Emeterio both had fine seasons with the DSL Cubs in 2014 as well.

The 20-year old right-handed hitting Paniagua (who plays 1B and OF) signed with the Cubs as a 17-year old prior to the 2012 season, and has spent three years in the DSL. He hit 305/396/511 with 20 SB (only one CS) and tied for the team lead in HR and was second in RBI for the DSL Cubs in 2014.

Now 22, Emeterio hit 309/452/404 for the DSL Cubs in 2014, his third season in the organization. The speedy right-handed hitter was second on the team in both walks and stolen bases in 2014. Emeterio was signed as 19-year old shortstop in 2012, but was moved the outfield after the 2013 season.

Gutierrez is a 24-year old right-handed hitting utility infielder who was signed by the Cubs in 2012, and he hit 285/355/350 for the VSL Cubs in 2014. Gutierrez was reported to be only 17 at the time that he signed, but he was obviously quite a bit older than that.

Matos and Galindo are probably the two best prospects among the contingent that just arrived. Both attended Cubs Instructs at Riverview Park last fall. Now 18, Matos hit 289/378/469 as a 17-year old for the DSL Cubs in 2014 and tied for the team-lead in HR with Paniagua, and Galindo hit 278/356/462 for VSL Cubs in 2014 as a 17-year old and led the team in both HR and doubles.

The youngest of the group, Narea is yet another slick-fielding Venezuelan shortstop. He was signed by the Cubs at the beginning of the 2014-15 International Signing Period last July ($150K bonus), and he just turned 17 last week. He is the only member of the Cubs 2014-15 International Signing class to be invited to Extended Spring Training (so far).

The eight new arrivals join 2014 DSL Cubs 2B Frandy de la Rosa, C Eric Gonzalez, IF-OF Carlos Jimenez, RHP Erling Moreno, and RHP Oscar de la Cruz, and 2014 VSL Cubs catchers Jhonny Pereda  and Roberto Vahlis and 3B Miguel Rico, who were invited to Minor League Camp. (Pereda also attended instructs last fall, Rico was invited early to be converted to catcher, and Moreno is at the Under Armour Performance Center rehabbing from 2014 TJS).

In other Cubs Extended Spring Training roster news, 1B Danny Canela has been released, and OF Jae-Hoon Ha is being converted to a RHP.

Carlos Rodon's college catcher at Norh Carolina State, the portly (5'10 250+) left-handed hitting Canela was signed by the Cubs as a 22-year old NDFA out of the independent Frontier League (River City Rascals) post-2013, where he had hit a league-leading .360 with 12 HR and 53 RBI in just 67 games. He played 1B and hit 295/429/350 for Boise in 2014, but was unable to compete for a job at South Bend at Minor League Camp this Spring due to a leg injury.

Ha is one iof three former position players being converted to pitcher by the Cubs this Spring (ex-C Mark Malave and ex-OF Ariel Ovando are the other two),

Now 24, Ha was signed by Cubs Pacific Rim Scout Steve Wilson as 17-year outfielder out of South Korea in 2008 ($225K bonus), and because of his athleticism and rocket arm, he was converted to catcher at Instructs post-2009 and into Extended Spring Training 2010. But he had a hang-up about throwing the ball back to the pitcher (known as "Mike Ivie-itis"), and was moved back the outfield prior to being assgned to Peoria in 2010.

He developed into a very promising outfielder over the next couple of years, and in fact he was so highly-regarded that he played in the MLB Futures Game in 2012, the year he hit 273/385/352 with 28 doubles for AA Tennessee. He was considered the Cubs best defensive CF prospect prior to the arrval of Albert Almora, but his career was sidetracked by a broken left wrist suffered at the very end of the 2013 season. He never really recovered from the injury (and subsequent surgery), and he struggled at the plate last year, first at Extended Spring Training, and then at AA Tennessee. I can remember him yelling "ow!!!" more than once when swinging awkwardly while taking BP last year.

Ha will be an MLB Rule 55 minor league 6YFA post-2015, so the Cubs won't have a lot of time to work with him on the conversion.

Here is the Cubs up-to-the-minute Extended Spring Training roster.

The EXST Cubs played a brief three-inning intrasquad game on Field #5 this morning.

Jordan Hankins clubbed a two-run HR, and Carlos Sepulveda laced an RBI double.

Cubs 2014 6th round pick RHP Dylan Cease (2014 TJS surgery) and 21-year old Dominican RHP Jose Zapata (post-2013 broken neck in car crash) threw "live" BP on Field #4 today, two "innings" (30 pitches) for Cease, and one "inning"  (15 pitches) for Zapata. Cease was outstanding (lots of swings & misses and weak contact), but Zapata had major control issues, with two HBP (17-year old Rafael Narea twice) and other pitches over the head and/or behind the back of other hitters among his 15 pitches.

Also, C Taylor Teagarden (AAA Iowa 7-day DL - shoulder) took BP on Field #3 today, and so I would think he probably will be playing in EXST games soon.

The Cubs have released 21-year old VSL Cubs LHP Angel Mejias (received six figure bonus when he signed with the Cubs as a 17-year old in 2010). Mejias had a fine year as a starting pitcher for DSL Cubs #1 in 2012 (2.58 ERA & 1.13 WHIP), but was unable to successfully make the jump from the DSL to the AZL in 2013, and spent the last two seasons pitching out of the bullpen for the VSL Cubs.

Mejias was the last of the six Cubs 2014 minor leaguers who were ineligible to play in the DSL or VSL in 2015 because they each had accrued four seasons of service in Latin American Summer Rookie leagues through the 2014 season. So the Cubs either had to assign the player to the AZL Cubs or give him his release.

Besides Mejias, the other Cub minor leaguers from last season who were ineligible to return to the DSL or VSL in 2015 because of the "four season limit" were OF-1B Delbis Arcila, IF-OF Humberto Garcia, LHP Victor Garcia, 1B-C Jhonny Pena, and RHP Julio Sanchez, and now ALL of them have been released. None of them were assigned to Extended Spring Training (and ultimately the AZL Cubs or Eugene).

Cubs minor leaguers who have accrued three seasons in Latin American Summer Rookie leagues through the 2014 season and who are presently assigned to either the DSL Cubs or VSL Cubs are RHP Jesus Arias, RHP Harrinson Bermudez, LHP Chris Pieters, and LHP Carlos Rodriguez. So the Cubs will need to decide by this time next year whether to move the player up to the AZL Cubs or give the player his release, although Arias is eligible to be a minor league FA post-2015 because he is a "second contract" player (he was released by another MLB organization prior to signing with the Cubs).

OF-IF Jenner Emeterio, OF-1B Jose Paniagua, 1B-3B-C Miguel Rico, and C Roberto Vahlis have alerady been moved up to Extended Spring Training, but if any any of them were to be returned to the DSL or VSL in 2015, they would join the four pitchers (Arias, Bermudez, Pieters, and Rodriguez) on the "watch" list for 2016.

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.
