Cubs @ AAA’s: Hendricks vs Manaea (Game 110)

Going for the Sunday get-away day sweep. CHC (68-41): RHP Kyle Hendricks (10-7, 2.22)
OAK (48-61): LHP Sean Manaea (3-6, 4.68)
First pitch: 3:05pmCST

Hendricks had a complete game shutout, striking out five and walking three, against Miami on Monday. He’s 2-6 with a 3.75 on the road this year. Overall, Oakland is 8-23 (.348) against him. Davis is 5-14.

Manea, another Oakland rookie, got lost in Los Angeles of Anaheim his last time out (5.2 IP, 4 ER, 4 K, 3 BB). He had a pretty rough start to the season, but he went 2-2 with a 3.13 in June and July. None of the Cubs have faced him.

An off day tomorrow, then we host the Angels, Cardinals, and Brewers.

Go Cubs!

Comments

39 pitch top of the 1st for Adam Wainwright, Braves lead 3-0. Pirates also down to the Reds, 3-0 (4th)

James Shields out in the 2nd inning (1.1 IP), losing 8-0 to Orioles. 2 HRs by Machado, 4 HR's total. Pile of goo that the WSox stepped in. Cardinal's Wainwright needing a change underpants in the 2nd and at 61 pitches. Braves now leading 6-0.

I like to visit BCB after a Hendricks win to make sure Al is still bragging about having a good feeling about Hendricks when the Cubs acquired him. Sunrise, sunset.

STL and PIT both lose... 11.5 games back and 13.5 games back respectively... ...feels good. cubs go for win #70 on tuesday vs LAA. jered "how do i still have a career" weaver is going for LAA.

The extended lead now will allow Maddon to rest guys even more - except during the Cardinals series.

That was an excellent "taking care of business" series. They should have won all 3, and they did. Maybe they should tee it up at Pebble before every series.

now that g.torres is gone, i wonder where the cubs system stands... they got e.jiminez and i.happ going at it for #1/2 with a bit of a little bit of a drop-off after that. j.candelario and d.cease coming up on the next tier...then it's a crapshoot below that...underwood? clifton? zagunis? de la cruz? sure, whatever order you want to put them in. that said, it looks like the cubs don't need much of anything until 2018 anyway...lots of time for talent to emerge and excess talent to be traded for other types of talent. TALENT!

I would guess about 16-22 of 30 at this point. No real impact talent on the way except maybe Jimenez, but he's a lottery ticket who needs years to develop still. Cease looks real exciting until about a month ago. Everyone else looks like a role player or worse. But the upside is that there are a ton of those guys who project to be potential role players, relief pitchers, etc. The Cubs have superstars in the fold, so you can argue that's not a bad system to have. I'll be interested to see the prospect lists in the spring. Either Yankees-Brewers or Brewers-Yankees at the top now.

Assuming he stays healthy, I hope they can work something out with Fowler. Aside from Lester, he looks like the best FA signing they've had the last two years. Also, strange to say, the work of Barry Bonds as a hitting instructor can't be denied, with Fowler and so many Marlins doing so well this season. Perhaps just coincidence/luck but I think he's gotta have some play with the positive results.

He'd be an interesting choice considering he was very good at taking pitches and walks last year. However not sure if Madden would go for that with his power and lack of speed. Plus he needs to show he can hit lefties. I wouldn't mind keeping Fowler just not sure the Cubs will want to give him the kind of contract he's gonna probably get this off-season.

$$$/years/almora sure, he might stay, but more than a few people aren't expecting it. it should be easy for fowler to get a fat 3+ year contract this off-season. his improved D in CF has been a great perk for his future value.

In reply to by jacos

a good amount of people are not expecting them to hand over the loot/years when almora is in-house and ready to go on a MLB level...especially with a slew of below-average D LF options on the horizon. i don't think the cubs plan for almora is 3+ years of bench work. it helps there's heyward and sczrurrzruzr around as "this was a bad idea" insurance for CF. i imagine they'll offer fowler a QO, though.

Obviously things can change but Theo said last off-season that they were able to give out some larger contracts with the idea that they wouldn't be doing so this off-season. So I wouldn't assume they have the $. I am not sold on Almora though so I definitely hope they find the money for Fowler.

Since the Matusz start -- Cubs haven't lost, and the starters look terrific. Hmmmm.

Brian Matusz was outrighted to Iowa last Wednesday, then he elected free-agency on Thursday, then he re-signed with the Cubs today.

It will be interesting to see if Matusz remains a starting pitcher going forward, or is moved back to the bullpen. (He was a pretty good LHRP with the Orioles 2013-15).

So we can say the Cubs aren't as good as the 25-6 (.806) start and not as bad as the 5-15 (.250) slump. Their record in other games is 39-20 (.661). I'll take that.

Jesse Rogers on the radio said Tommy LaStella is dealing with something more important than baseball. So that sounds like there's a reason beyond service time issues.

If Soler is indeed back -- where is he going to play? RF against LHP? Maddon likes Javy at 3rd and KB in LF against LHP -- and Javy's D at 3rd trumps Soler's D in LF. Unless they are going to start sitting Heyward, I don't see where Soler plays.

I imagine it'll depend on Soler's hitting. When he's hot he's a better bat than Baez and a ton more patient. So if he's hot I imagine he'll get a good chunk of playing time in LF with Baez coming in as a defensive replacement or spelling other players. With as much as Madden likes to give rest, especially in September, Baez could still get consistent playing time. Now if Soler is struggling then he sits a lot more.

Say Hendricks pitches the rest of the year the way he has so far, he has one more auto and 3 are arb years left, do you do like they did with Rizzo and buy out those years and get a couple of extra years at what could be a bargain price and his agent isn't Scott Boras rather than deal with the Arrieta (Boras) ordeal especially when Kris (Boras), Addison (Boras), Kyle, Javy are gonna need contracts then?

Cards one out away from a 4-0 implosion to the Reds -- then, thanks to 3 walks and 2 HBP, and they win 5-4. Tying run scores on a walk, winning run on a HBP. I know we got 2 wins on 2-out WP, but, still -- that sucks.

Dillon Maples has not pitched particularly well anywhere for the Cubs, until he got to South Bend 13.2 innings ago. He's their closer, with six saves in as many opportunities. South Bend has a Cub-like 70-43 record. Myrtle Beach has also been winning lately and could make the playoffs by winning the second half in the Southern Div of the Carolina League. They're in first by 2.5 games. Tennessee and Iowa are not in playoff contention.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.
