The Cubs enjoyed a two-game sweep of the Southsidees on their way to a 50-51 record. That puts them a game within .500 and 6 games behind the Brewers in the Nl Central. They visit the Cardinals for a four-game weekend series ending just short of the trade deadline. The Cards would surely like to spoil the Cubs' hopes for 2023 as a consolation for their own disappointing season. Matchups for this pivotal series await below.

As a group, the Cubs first basemen rank last in the majors in terms of WAR (negative-2.1, per FanGraphs). Their third basemen (1.0 WAR) and designated hitters (0.1 WAR) are collectively around the bottom third of the majors. Simply getting average production in these areas could be a boost for an offense that is recently clicking.

A veteran right-handed hitter like C.J. Cron would make a lot of sense, assuming the Rockies actually go through with a traditional sale at the trade deadline. Cron, 33, will become a free agent after this season. An All-Star last year, Cron put up 57 homers and 194 RBIs across the previous two seasons combined. Though his production has dipped this season (.778 OPS) — and he would no longer get home games at Coors Field — Cron would represent a potential upgrade.

Cron's BWAR so far this season is 0.0.  In theory, that’s replacement player quality, which - in theory - we should be able to get off the waiver wire or by getting any guy from AAA.

 

So, if Cron is at 0.0 WAR, that’s better than -2.1, which means that the Cubs’ replacement players are worse than a replacement player. Can they find someone who can do better?

ohtani threw his 1st complete game, a shutout.  the MLB HR leader just threw a 1 hit shutout.

he's gonna get sick money next year if LAA doesn't extend him.  imagine having mike trout and shohei ohtani on your team for 5 years and they can't manage to make the playoffs.  they're going for it in year 6, though...made a big trade today for a SP and reliever.

i wish the chicago cubs were a large market team, or they could monetize the ballpark and land around it...maybe get some kind of betting/casino-like action with one of those sports betting companies.  that would be cool...

i cant believe it's a few days away from august and i'm thrilled about a .500 cubs team (assuming they don't blow a 8 run lead in the next 3 innings).

i've bought in.  i'm down.  go shop for a sure-thing quality reliever...some dependable starter-quality bat help...

i still wouldn't be shocked to see a sell-off, but if they decide to go for it, they need to lean into it.

wsox have shed k.graveman (HOU) and l.lynn + j.kelly (LAD)...a couple days ago they got rid of l.giolito + r.lopez (LAA).  every pitcher must go!

yeah, no "woah" trades have been made, but there's been some good high-value packages traded...so far nothing is very impressive.

Good to see guys not try too hard to be the hero, take the walk (or hbp) and move the line along - they had faith in their teammates and they got rewarded. 
 

Hell, Mancini just made a nice stretch catch at first.  Crazy stuff going on.

tachman with 4 "gatorade" baths...they're straight up throwing cooler ice on the dude while doing a post-game interview.  not often defensive plays get this treatment.  wow, what a game.

That double play turn in the ninth - Hoerner had a quicker release than Dan Marino. Hell of a play!

I'd like for Suzuki to moved down in the lineup

Maybe 6th or 7th. Just take the pressure off of him. Let him hit freely. He seems very mechanical.

I'd move Happ down as well, but that isn't happening. Ross wants Belli directly behind Happ trying to get Happer pitches to hit. But Belli has to hit close to the top to maximize his Plate appearances.

Candelario fits the mold for 3B. Several teams are targeting him. He might be the only starting bat on the market. 

Here's my pipedream reliever: Hader

I hated him as a Brewer. Just hated him.

But I didn't care for Chapman either. He won us a lot of games.

He'd cost a ton, even as a rental. But he'd be worth it.

Candelario and Hader, Jed. Make it happen.

happ and the 3 spot seems to be hardwired into ross's lineup construction.  he occasionally ventures out of the 3 slot, but not much.

my "wish list" would be a 1-stop trade with WAS for candelario + kyle finnegan (RP, 2 years of club control left).  it won't be cheap, but the cubs have a bit of excess talent to shop with.  that said, i have 0 idea if WAS would even shop finnegan.

Wowza. I can't remember the last legit homerun robbery I've seen to end a game. I thought for sure that one would catch a jet stream and end up out of reach.

Mentioning KB…he’s back on the IL with a fractured left index finger that occurred after he was hit by a pitch from Johnny Cueto last week (Saturday night at Miami). He missed most of June with a bruised heel.

Friday Cubs/Cardinals games have not been kind to Alec Burleson recently. Last Friday he hit into that double play with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning after working the count to 3-0 and getting two out of the zone pitches called strikes on him. Then last night he hits what would have been a walk off home run except for Tauchman going over the wall to bring it back in and catch it. The life of a pinch hitter…

Tonight’s ump’s strike zone not nearly as good as last nights - he was pretty much square on with the box on the tv. This guy not so much.

I said yesterday if the Cubs win today they cannot sell.

Jed has 42 hrs until the trade deadline.

He needs a RP (probably left handed) and a 3B/1B/DH. We've spoken over the last week or so about those two spots.

Jed could still trade Stroman. That seems crazy after tonight. 

He could trade Smyly. He's under contract for next yr as well for a team that would acquire him.

Then all of our 4A guys in Iowa could be packaged. Some AA & A+ guys as well.

The Domestic Reserve list drops from 180 to 165 this winter and we signed 22 guys during the draft. 

Guys can be moved in the next 42 hrs. Probably will be moved.

We'll see what Jed does.

even if jed wants to go cheap and skate into a shot at the offseason with in-house stuff, i really want to see a strong reliever come on board.

alzolay is great, but he's the only guy on the team on his level of performance.  it would be nice to have someone join him...even if not as good as alzolay as long as it's someone who's near his level.  leiter was great for a while, and though he has a string of good appearances the past couple weeks after a string of rough outings, the Ks are down and the defense is doing a lot of work for him.

the rest of the in-house guys are decent enough middle relief and assad has been a very capable long reliever.  none of them are amazing, but they're not instant disasters.

    I think it’s a bit of a chicken or egg scenario. Did they make these trades because they saw what was coming and weren’t impressed and knew to keep up with the demand for constant winning thru had to acquire impact players? Or did those additions cause a failure of resource allocation elsewhere.

    In addition, the whole they traded to acquire a star, that’s precisely what organizations should do if they feel they’re a piece away. Keep developing talent, but sometimes you need to supplement that talent. It’s what the best run organizations do. Atlanta does it. Houston in their prime run did it. Nationals during their prime run did it. Of course dodgers did it. Boston and Philadelphia too. Hell, the Cubs did it when they won. There’s no team that has had sustained success that has solely relied on their own internal development. It just doesn’t happen. I wouldn’t fault St Louis for that. What I suspect happened is in that 2020 season, in an effort to save money, they cut budget from developing and scouting. Or maybe the wrong guys got poached by other orgs. Regardless, blaming the acquisition of two of the best players of their generation for peanuts, seems off base to me.

    I do agree that we’ve more or less come to the same conclusion, but our paths to that conclusion contain almost no crossover. I think we can also agree that seeing the cardinals struggle brings a warmth to our hearts.
