Cubs Recap for April 17, 2012

The Cubs fall to 3-8 and only Peoria manages a win in the organization.

@Marlins 5 - Cubs 2; It appears the Cubs have a script they can follow for the rest of the season, solid starting pitching effort, a pathetic offense, give up some outs on defense and the basepaths, and then watch the bullpen implode and lose the game. Dempster goes 6 innings with 8 K's against just 2 BB's and 2 unearned runs, although it was own error that was the culprit. He gave way to Dolis in the 7th after 100 pitches and Dolis got through that inning with the tie intact. Dolis came back out for the 8th though and induced his specialty, a ground ball by Reyes to start the inning that Barney butchered. This was followed by a passed ball by Clevenger, then a walk to Bonifacio and the final nail, a 3-run bomb by Hanley to win the game. Some other memorable moments of awesome: DeJesus with a leadoff walk in the 6th, only to get thrown out at second base when a ball in the dirt didn't get nearly as far from John Buck as DeJesus was expecting. DeJesus with a weak throw to try and nail Josh Johnson at the plate. LaHair nearly getting picked off first base after bringing in the tying run with a single and then leaving too early, where Johnson just had to step off the mound to nab him at second base himself.

@Albuquerque 13 - Iowa 6; Rusin gets the start and gives up 6 runs in an inning of work, but just 2 earned thanks to Rizzo dropping a throw by Valbuena that would have ended the inning. N. Robertson got torched for 6 runs himself (5 earned) in 3 innings of work. There was also a passed ball by Lalli and errors by Cardenas and Vitters. On offense, Valbuena, Rizzo and Cardenas each had 2 hits.

Tennessee was rained out.

@Dunedin 8 - Dayton 7; H. Simpson gets lit up for 6 ER in 2.2 IP on 6 H, 4 BB, 0 K and 1 HR. On offense, G. Rohan was the star going 2/3 with 2 BB's including a 2-run shot in the 9th to bring them within one. Eleiser Bonne hit one out as well. Andreoli, Silva, C. Noble and R. Jones all get on-base multiple times.

@Peoria 7 - Cedar Rapids 6;  Not much on the pitching side as Francescon (3.2 IP/2 ER), Bryce Shafer(1.1 IP/3 ER) and Scott Weismann(2 IP/1 ER) all give up runs. Yao-Lin Wang goes 2 scoreless innings and gets the win when the Chiefs score on a leadoff bunt by Olver Zapata who advances to third on 2 balks and scores on an error. Zapata went 3/4 on the night, B. Zapenas 2/3 with a walk and Pin-Chieh Chen 2/3 with a walk, a double and a triple.

Does he have any options left, Phil?

morel in the lineup and playing 3rd.

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

    also little optioned, palencia up.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

  • crunch (view)

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

  • Cubster (view)

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).
