The Cubs Way a Path to Victory at Indian School Park

Jorge Soler and Chadd Krist blasted solo home runs, and Marco Hernandez ripped a double and an RBI single, scored a run, and stole a base, leading the Cubs to an 8-3 victory over the Giants in Arizona Instructional League action this afternoon at Indian School Park Field #2 in Scottsdale.

San Francisco Giants 2B Freddy Sanchez (reported "out for the season" after undergoing back surgery in July) was a DH in today’s game, getting one AB in each of the first four innings. (Sanchez is on a minor league injury rehab assignment at the Giants minor league base in Scottsdale). RHP Pierce Johnson (Cubs 2012 Supplemental 1st Round draft pick out of Missouri State) faced Sanchez the first three times he batted, and retired the big leaguer all three times (called third strike, and then two F-9 pop flies). Sanchez did manage an RBI single in his final AB against Ryan McNeil in the bottom of the 4th, however.

The Cubs did not record an extra base hit in either of their first two Instructs games last week, but the offense was diverse and efficient today, scoring a run without the benefit of a hit in the top of the 1st inning (three consecutive two out walks and a WP), two solo HR, two RBI doubles, and an RBI single. For the day, the Cubs had 11 hits (including the two solo HR and three doubles), six walks, a HBP, and six stolen bases.

So far, the Cubs have drawn 20 walks in their first three Instructs games (20 walks used to be a couple of week’s worth).

Here is the abridged box score from today’s game (Cubs players only)

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.

    Amen to that last point!
