Cubs Youngsters Swept at Diablo

RHSP Alexander Blackford hurled three innings of no-run/no-hit ball with six strikeouts and Zach Houchins drove-in four runs with two run-scoring doubles, leading the Arkansas Travelers (Los Angeles Angels AA affiliate) to a 9-2 victory over the Tennessee Smokies (Chicago Cubs AA affiliate) on Field #4, and Chad Hinshaw belted an RBI double to key a three-run 1st inning as the Salt Lake Bees (Angels AAA affiliate) edged the Iowa Cubs (AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) 4-3 on Field #7, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training game action Monday afternoon at the Diablo Stadium Complex in Tempe, AZ.

Carlos Penalver drilled an RBI double and a single and stole a base for the Smokies in a losing cause.

It was a mixed-bag as far as the Cubs pitching was concerned.

Iowa SP Eric Jokiisch threw strikes (78%) but was (once again) hit, this time to the tune of seven hits in just three inings, Tennessee RHP Preston Morrison allowed seven runs (all earned) on eight hits (a triple, a double, and six singles, plus an HBP) in only two innings of work, and Iowa lefty reliever Edgar Olmos had difficulty finding the strike zone (25 pitches - only 13 strikes) and did not record an out.

On the positive side, LHRP Gerardo Concepcion (working in the AAA game) threw two innings of shutout relief with three strikeouts and was consistently 93-94 MPH with his fastball, and I-Cubs LHRP Scott Barnes continues to wipe out opposing hitters with strikeouts, recording two more today in his one inning of work.

There were some roster additions to provide bench and bullpen depth for the game, as LHRP Sam Wilson was temporarily moved-up to the Tennessee roster from the Myrtle Beach squad, LHP Gerardo Concepcion and C-1B Cael Brockmeyer were moved up to the Iowa roster from the Tennessee squad, and OF Roberto Caro and INF Andruw Monasterio were moved-up to the Iowa squad from the Eugene/Mesa group (Extended Spring Training).

In Minor League Camp roster news, there was quite a bit of movement in the aftermath of the Cubs sending eleven players to Minor League Camp from the MLB squad this past Friday:

IOWA to TENNESSEE: Pitchers Michael Jensen, Brad Markey, Juan Carlos Paniagua, Steve Perakslis, James Pugliese, Tayler Scott, Tyler Skulina, and Rob Zastryzny, catchers Cael Brockmeyer, Ben Carhart, and Will Remillard, and infielder Bryant Flete;

WARNING FOR SENSITIVE PEOPLE WITH SENSITIVE VIBES WHICH ARE EASILY DISTURBED BY POLITICAL TALK AND OTHER SENSITIVE SUBJECTS WHICH MAY BE A TRIGGER FOR SENSITIVE PEOPLE...but this is cubs related. ---------- HIATT: I’d like to come back to the campaign. You said a few weeks ago after a family in Chicago gave some money to a PAC opposing you, you said, “They better watch out. They have a lot to hide.” What should they watch out for? TRUMP: Look, they are spending vicious … I don’t even know these people. Those Ricketts. I actually said they ought to focus on the Chicago Cubs and, you know, stop playing around. They spent millions of dollars fighting me in Florida. And out of 68 counties, I won 66. I won by 20 points, almost 20 points. Against, everybody thought he was a popular sitting senator. I had $38 million dollars spent on me in Florida over a short period of time. $38 million. And, you know, the Ricketts, I don’t even know these people. HIATT: So, what does it mean, “They better watch out”? TRUMP: Well, it means that I’ll start spending on them. I’ll start taking ads telling them all what a rotten job they’re doing with the Chicago Cubs. I mean, they are spending on me. I mean, so am I allowed to say that? I’ll start doing ads about their baseball team. That it’s not properly run or that they haven’t done a good job in the brokerage business lately. https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2016/03/21/a-tran… ---------- FOR THOSE THAT NEEDED TO SKIP THIS POST, HERE'S A CONSOLATION PRIZE...A RON SANTO CORN MAZE. That douchy all caps message is clearly directed at me. So with that, I'll concede defeat. You win Crunch. I am out. Congratulations. I'll stay off your personal posting board.

Sorry Steve. Good luck with this. I'll keep my login active and keep updating Wiklifield for awards, etc. but otherwise I am done; I have better things to do with my time.

All that movement in the minor league camp, but not any cuts yet. Is that correct AZ Phil?

Joe with the Defcon 5 lineup today 1. Dexter Fowler (S), CF 2. Jason Heyward (L), RF 3. Ben Zobrist (S), 2B 4. Anthony Rizzo (L), 1B 5. Kris Bryant (R), 3B 6. Kyle Schwarber (L), C 7. Jorge Soler (R), LF 8. Addison Russell (R), SS 9. Jason Hammel (R), P

Schwarber has now picked off two Reds and is handling the pitches well so far. This match up with Hammel thing might work out!

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

  • crunch (view)

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

  • crunch (view)

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

  • crunch (view)

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.

    Amen to that last point!
