Madrigal Goes Deep & Peralta is Everywhere on Cubs Backfields

Jimmy Glowenke and Victor Bericoto each smacked a two-run HR, Heliot Ramos and Will Wilson belted solo home runs, and Brett Wisely doubled twice, scored a run, and drove-in another, as the Sacramento River Cats (San Francisco Giants AAA affiliate) rallied to edge to the Iowa Cubs (AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) 9-8 on Field # 6, and SP Carson Ragsdale and four relievers combined to hurl a two-hit shutout as the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants AA affiliate) blanked the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA affiliate) 1-0 on Field # 5, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training game action Tuesday afternoon at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Jake Slaughter and Caleb Knight each hammered a two-run HR, Pete Crow-Armstrong ripped an RBI single and a double (he also lost a ball in the sun that fell for a double), Kevin Alcantara singled, walked twice, and scored a run, and Matt Shaw laced an RBI single for the Iowa Cubs in a losing cause on Field # 6, and Tennessee Smokies pitchers surrendered only three hits in the game on Field # 5 (although they walked nine and hit a batter).

Nick Madrigal (strained hamstring) and David Peralta (post-2023 left flexor tendon surgery) continued their game rehabs, serving as Extra Hitters (EH) in both the Tennessee and Iowa games, and going back & forth between the two adjacent fields to accumulate as many AB in as short a time as possible. For the day, Madrigal went a combined 3-5 with two singles and a solo HR (oppo high fly over the RF fence), and Peralta went a combined 1-4 with a single, two walks, a strike out, a run scored, and a CS, over the course of six PA.

Peralta is able to hit and run OK, but he is still likely to be left behind at Extended Spring Training (if he doesn't opt-out of his contract prior to Opening Day) to continue his rehab throwing program, and it is unclear at this time if Madrigal's hamstring will be sufficiently healed for him to avoid an Opening Day 10-day IL stint (obviously he can hit without any difficulty, but he was unable to even jog around the bases in Tuesday's games, much less run at full speed).

If the Cubs don't want to risk Perlata opting-out, they could select him to their MLB 40-man roster and then immediately place him on the 60-day IL, with a plan to leave him behind at Extended Spring Training for six weeks and then start a 20 day Article XIX-C minor league rehab assignment at AAA Iowa in May.

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

The level of conversation on this site is intelligent, reasoned and informative. Miles ahead of other Cub sites.

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    JAXON WIGGINS
    ONE INNING:
    25 pitches (11 strikes)
    no batted balls in play
two walks (Suriel and J. Diaz)

    six swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    14 called balls

    no swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    eight called balls
    one WP

Mat Peters was bumped by Justin Steele from his scheduled game work at Giants, so he threw two innings of "live" BP with Wiggins & Roberts.

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
