Probably the two most talked about teams from the offseason face-off at Wrigley today.

Before the game, the Cubs announced Neil Ramirez and Mike Olt will head to the 15-day disabled list. Ramirez with right shoulder inflammation, but no structural damage, Mike Olt with a hairline fracture in his wrist. In their place, the Cubs activate Chris Denorfia and call-up this kid named Kris Bryant. I expect nothing less than a 5-HR day (actually I expect a 1/4 with a HR, 3 K's and a throwing error).

As for the rest of the game, Cubs curiously go with Beefy behind the plate, not that I mind, but interesting choice after the off-day. Also, Herrera still gets a start which makes some defensive sense with the ground-ball pitcher Hammel on the mound and Alcantara not exactly lighting it up with the bat, but hopefully something that doesn't become habitual.

If you're looking at batter vs. pitcher match-ups, Coghlan has gone 5/13 with 4 BB's off Shield in his career, Kemp is 7/25 with a HR and Upton 8/29 with 2 HR's off Hammel.

stupid temps...actually, thank god for temps...we don't have enough. missed the game until now and bryant's 1st of 300 Ks. at least he should hit his 1st of 100 homers next AB. i'm hiding out in the breakroom with mlb.tv and a nice cup of coffee. woo.

that was a pretty awful AB there Castro, let first change go low. Then swung at 2 that were also low, then looked at breaking ball in the zone.

It's just one game but if he has something mechanically wrong it isn't showing at all. Every young third baseman throws balls away sometimes, I'm not worried about that even after the first time it happens. I was expecting Aramis Ramirez double clutching stuff or something - which he also worked out. It's just not there. Dude looks fine.

I have NEVER been a Shitter aficianado (except in my own home) - and hope they have a better resource in the minors. I was hoping he was the odd man out after camp, but it wasn't to be. You cannot give a good ball club 4 strikes, particularly someone like Wil Meyers. That was bullshit - but Schlitter sucks in every pressure situation.

Learning experience for Maddon? I mean, Shitter is a mop up pitcher at best. Yeah, they got screwed on that umpire's decision to change his strike zone mid-game, but you don't float a ball up there like that in Wrigley late in the game. Man, I groaned as soon as I saw him take the mound.

They didn't reach in, right call, even if you can see it. If it gets stuck on a branch, fielder gets screwed.

i think almost everyone is expecting rather high K numbers (150-ish not out of the question) to go along with 30-40+ homers. he's obviously got a bit of an eye (let's pretend his 1st 3-pitch-strikeout AB didn't happen), so even if his contact stats are average he should at least put up a decent ob%. that said, how much breaking-in does he need before he gets on track? hopefully, not much. hopefully he's not a bust...no one (or barely anyone) expects a bust. i'm ready to give him a couple years to get it together, but i think (and so does the rest of the world) he's going to put it together well before this season is done, if not immediately.

Great call by 2nd base ump on teh steal. He missed the tag even though the ball beat him there by a mile.
