Seiya Suzuki Thrashes a Brandon Hughes Offering at Sloan Park

Seiya Suzuki blasted a solo HR (off Brandon Hughes) over the LF bullpen and onto the berm, Ismael Mena drilled an RBI triple (also off Brandon Hughes), Yidel Diaz belted a two-run double, and SP Jackson Ferris hurled three innings of no run / no hit ball with four strikeouts (three swinging), in an Extended Spring Training intrasquad game played at Sloan Park Wednesday morning.

The game ended in a 3-3 tie.

Suzuki played RF for the entire game (although no balls were hit to him) and batted four times, popping out to short right-center (P-4) in his first PA, drawing a walk his second time up, unleashing the Seiya Samurai Swat in his third AB, and grounding out 5-3 in his final PA.

Seiya didn't get a chance to play in the stadium during 2023 Spring Training and his previous EXST games were on a backfield, but today he made the most of his opportunity to swing the bat at Sloan Park.

LHRP Brandon Hughes threw 1.1 IP (22 pitches - 19 strikes - 86% strikes!), striking out four (all four swinging), but also allowing the Suzuki dinger, a single to Frank Hernandez, and the Mena RBI triple.

Prior to the game in the stadium, Manuel Espinoza and Zac Leigh threw "live" BP on Field #5. Ed Howard ad Ezequiel Pagan were two of the five hitters who batted against them.

If you’re drunk from slamming Mai Tais out of a beer-bat turned bong, I have just the place for you. Arizona's hottest club is Fungo. Inspired by Rue McClanahan, it is designed to resemble Sloan Park, which resembles Wrigley Field, which resembles Truth. And applesauce. This place has everything. Cup snakes.  Crunk-clock violations. Brewer fans peeing in the corner. Tyler O’Neil wrestling Oli Marmol in a vat of nacho cheese. Plus, you can give a 21st century answer to the question "what's a REGGIE!  ?" by sampling the newest from the enigmatic mind of Lars Nootbaar - the Toonslar energy baar!   A delicious pick-me-up made of compressed peanut shells, cracker jack boxes, & grizzly bear adrenaline.

It sounds from Phil’s reports that Jackson Ferris is making quite an impression.

Phil, do you think he gets an assignment to a full season team soon?

mervis grand slam...3rd of the iowa season.  heating up.  reminder that mlb.tv subscription gives you televised/radio minor league games with your subscription this season.  they don't televise the stuff phil provides, though...very thankful we have that, we're a lucky fan base.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
