Cubs @ Pirates: Anderson vs Kuhl (Game 19)

CHC (10-8): LHP Brett Anderson (1-0, 4.40)
PIT (8-10): RHP Chad Kuhl (1-1, 2.60)
First pitch: 6:05pmCST

Anderson shit the bed against the Brewers his last time out (3.2 IP, 6 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) but avoided the loss thanks to the Cubs' late-inning heroics. Overall, the Pirates are 6-31 (.194) against him. McCutchen is 2-7, and Mercer has a HR.

Kuhl gave up 2 ER in 6 innings but lost in St. Louis in his last outing. We saw him in three starts last year in his rookie season. He went 0-2 with a 10.45 ERA. The Cubs are a healthy 17-38 (.447) against him. Rizzo is 4-7 with a HR. Everyone has a hit but Russell.

Hendricks (1-2, 6.19) and Cole (1-2, 4.70) tomorrow at the same time.

Go Cubs!

Comments

I do not really care for the outfield setup tonight, given its our weakest defensive outfield configuration and PNC is a pretty vast outfield. Hopefully unlike his last 2 starts Anderson has his sinker working or there could very well be alot of triples for the Buccos.

baez/zobrist/almora/jay makes for a hell of a "problem" trying to find ABs for guys who would be full time starters on many teams. schwarber in LF is looking rather bad at the moment, but the bat has to get into the lineup somehow. btw, his D has turned his .361 ob%, 3 HR, 4 doubles in 83 PA performance into a -0.3 WAR...which is yet another reason i'm not a fan of how heavily OF D is weighed in WAR, especially when there's 2-ish put outs a game for them on average. i mean, schwarb's D is bad, but enough to say he's worth less than a replacement level player compared to his outfield playing peers? meh.

He has a positive .3 WAR on Fangraphs but really his offensive numbers haven't been overall great so far so his oWAR is still fairly low. He has the highest K rate on the team and while his OBP is good he has the lowest SLG on the team. A high OBP and PPA is good for a leadoff hitter of course but with his lack of speed and poor defense you probably want to see more from his bat to make up for it. It's also only 19 or 20 games in and he still has very little major league experience, he is going to go through slumps and he has plenty of time to work on things.

heyward! another HR! cubs lead by 4 in the 1st with 2 out (all runs after 2 outs)

Heyward is, literally, a month ahead of last year. He now has 3HR and 16RBI -- last year, he didn't reach either of those numbers until May 25. Javy, meanwhile, must really be annoying Joe and Theo. If he keeps swinging from his ass on every pitch and getting himself out like he is now, and he and TLS may be switching spots in a few weeks. This was always the fear with him -- success would make him forget how he made it back to the bigs and overcame his failures. He is now back to 2014 Javy Baez...which is not a good thing. Try hitting the ball to right-center for a few games. And...Miggy looks like he does not plan to go quietly into that good night.

I look for Montero to have a great season. His first time coming into the season as a backup, but having been allowed to make that transition last season, he should take advantage of being well rested and stay healthy to play mostly every 5th day (with some occasional extras). He knows he has no spot here in the future, so he's playing for a contract with a new team, and you know he'd love to be the starter. But he can probably at the least earn himself a 2 year contract with some team that's desperate, and the better he plays now, the better he'll get paid next year.

this game is a f'n circus. 7-1, top 2nd, 1 out. ...9-1 cubs 2nd. neat. ...10-1 cubs 3rd. russell is 3-3. russell 4-4 in the top 6th. russell finishes 4-6, cubs up 14-3 in the top 9th and most likely gonna win this one.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    JAXON WIGGINS
    ONE INNING:
    25 pitches (11 strikes)
    no batted balls in play
two walks (Suriel and J. Diaz)

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
