Padres @ Cubs: Richard vs Lester (Game 69)

SD (28-42): LHP Clayton Richard (5-7, 4.30)
CHC (34-34): LHP Jon Lester (4-4, 3.89)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Yesterday was the third time this month the Cubs hit the .500 mark and the 104th time it has happened this season (Crunch Sports Bureau).

Rizzo is riding a 12-game hitting streak, going 18-45 (.409), including 9-22 with 3 HRs and 8 RBI in his five games leading off.

This series is a quick three-game stop at home to get a change of socks before heading back out on the road, and we get a battle of two lefties.

Lester went seven strong innings of one-run ball, striking out 10 to beat the Mets on Tuesday. Overall, the Padres are 17-62 (.274) against him. Aybar is 10-26.

Richard, who the Cubs could probably use in the rotation, gave up 2 ER over 8.2 to beat the Reds his last time out. He also threw 127 pitches, on his way to the almost-complete game. (His last complete game was in May against Arizona, in case you’re wondering.) In three career starts, he’s 2-1 with a 2.53 against the Cubs, and they are 8-45 (.178) against him. Jay is 2-5.

Chacin (6-5) and Montgomery (0-3) go tomorrow at 7:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Yankees announce that Gleyber Torres needs Tommy John surgery on his left (non-throwing) elbow. Haven't seen a projected timetable for his return. Scratch that: he's out for the remainder of this season and projected to be recovered in time for 2018 spring training.

wow. yeah, it's "derby" and "batting practice" tossing...but wow. also, that's the dream of 99% of everyone else on that field as a kid at least once, and most of those in attendance, too.

Nice to see Eloy back on the field and hitting. Putting up solid numbers in about a month worth of play at A+, including a very good K:BB to go with his usual power and average. A mid-season promotion to AA would be nice. I am currently hoping that the Cubs do not bother with a rental at the trade deadline, as I'm not a huge believer in the 2017 team--things just aren't lining up, especially among the starting pitchers. A controllable SP has to remain the priority, and it's the only trade target for which I would be OK with parting with Jimenez. It's not hard to imagine him outhitting all of the current Cubs OFers (not counting KB) in a few years.

a.almora with his 1st 2-walk game in his career. 2 tonight in his 1st 2 PA, 17 total in his 261 PA career.

cubs lead!!! great inning. classic 2016 cubs hitting and baserunning on display this inning.

schwarber day to day after fouling one off his ankle. it was concerning enough to get an xray, but it came back negative.

Man, it's good to win the first game of a series. Broken record here, but I would love to see Almora as the everyday CF and Javy at 2B. Such good defense.

i wouldn't object to happ going back down and almora playing a bit more. lastella could back up 2nd and almora could get regular work in CF. that said, it's nice to have all of them around even if happ looks overmatched more often than not lately. at least there's a lot of doubles and homers in between those Ks.

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

one batted ball in play (F-9 by Stevens)
    one walk (B. Davis)

    three swing & miss
    two fouls

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    JAXON WIGGINS
    ONE INNING:
    25 pitches (11 strikes)
    no batted balls in play
two walks (Suriel and J. Diaz)
three strikeouts (Carico, Lubo, and Escobar - all three swinging)
    six swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    14 called balls

    no strikeouts
    no swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    eight called balls
    one WP

Mat Peters was bumped by Justin Steele from his scheduled game work at Giants, so he threw two innings of "live" BP with Wiggins & Roberts.

    MAT PETERS
    TWO INNINGS
    44 pitches (23 strikes)
    five batted balls in play (F-7, L-7, F-7, G-6, G-3)

    nine called strikes
    21 called balls
    three WP

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
