Cubs Youngsters Face Freddy Sanchez Again at Extended Spring Training
Pin-Chieh Chen had two hits and scored a run, Rafael Disla reached base twice and scored two runs, and Sergio Burruel drove-in two runs with a sacrifice fly and a double, but it wasn’t anywhere near enough offense as one squad of EXST Giants defeated one squad of EXST Cubs 6-3 on Field #1, while over on Field #2, the other squad of EXST Cubs managed only one run on two hits against the other squad of EXST Giants in a game that finished in a 1-1 tie, in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training split-squad doubleheader played at Indian School Park in Scottsdale this morning. Both games were stopped after seven innings, and the games were played simultaneously.
San Francisco Giants 2B Freddy Sanchez (knee and shoulder surgeries) continued his minor league rehab assignment with the EXST Giants, playing 2B and batting in five of the seven innings in the game on Field #2. Peoria RHP Marcus Hatley, getting into his first game action since undergoing Tommy John Surgery last September, struck out Sanchez (swinging) on a 2-2 pitch with runners on 1st and 3rd and no outs in the bottom of the 1st. Sanchez then ripped a single off LHP John Mincone with one out in the bottom of the 2nd (but was erased on an inning-ending 5-4-3 DP) and reached base again against Mincone on an E-4 (should have been a 4-6-3 DP) in the bottom of the 4th. Sanchez struck out (swinging) against RHP Jadel Mendez with one out and the bases empty in the bottom of the 6th, and grounded out 6-3 in his final AB against RHP Yohan Gonzalez with one out and nobody on base in the bottom of the 7th. So for the day, Sanchez went 1-5, with a single and two strikeouts.
Iowa Cubs 1B-OF Jason Dubois (placed on the I-Cubs 7-day DL with back spasms a couple of weeks ago) got a rehab start (as a DH) with the Cubs squad on Field #2, batting 3rd in both the top of the 1st and top of the 2nd. He struck out swinging in the 1st, and grounded out to shortstop (RBI) in the top of the 2nd. He then left the game and returned to Fitch Park. I don’t know if the plan was for him to get only two ABs and then go back to Mesa (which would be unusual), or if he maybe was pulled from the game because he did not feel he could continue. But his swing did look a bit stiff in the early-morning pre-game BP session at Fitch Park before the team traveled to Scottsdale.

why the hell is nady, his .180 average, and 1hr hitting 4th?
our 3/4/5 hitters are hitting below .200 combined and the 4/5 hitters are around the .175 mark.
we got 2 .320+ average hitters in the 6/7 slots...1 with 7hr and the other with 4hr.

I hear what you're saying, but Nady has only had 39 at-bats this year. Lee and Ramirez can't seem to get it going. Maybe Nady can.

i could live with aram or nady hitting 5th and dlee hitting 3rd, but stringing 3 guys hitting like this in a row...ugg.

Did you think it was weird/stupid to rest Soriano and Soto both yesterday? The Cubs are having trouble scoring runs and Lou rests them both. I know they both need rest from time to time, but they are both hitting well right now. Rest one at a time if you're going to rest them. That didn't seem right to me.

it's a weird one...not tragic, but who knows what was up. they don't seem to be unhealthy right now.
i'd like to see soriano moved up in the lineup...at least in aram's 5-slot.
soto's been looking good, himself.

Lou put him 6th last year to break up the RH power, and said he was going to leave him there. He tried him 5th one game, and he looked like crap.
I am not sure how many of Lou's daughters Soto knocked up, but he maybe shouldn't have given them herpes while he was at it.

Lou must believe that moving those guys up in the lineup could screw them up at the plate. That's the only thing that makes any sense to me, even if I don't agree with the reasoning.

He actually checked the runner, but then jogged slowly after it, which is when Ramirez presumably took off. Luckily his roommate picked him up.

Lilly picked off the guy at first base, Ross took off for home and made it.
He was already creeping down the line before Lilly even made the move.

Why can't Z pitch two days in a row??
How many weeks after Soriano cools off will you move him up in a struggling line up?

Never a good sign: bringing in your closer when you are down 2 runs.
The Kerry Wood era was fun -- 4 playoff appearances in 11 years (if I have my math right) and a lot of hope and excitement at Wrigley. His arrival signaled a new day for the Cubs, and his departure seems to have signaled a return to mediocrity (and lots of empty seats in September).

he's a better fielder than the guy that showed up today, but so far in his career he's never shown consitancy with his D.
his bat and D are both advanced for his age, but it doesn't mean they have to rush it before it's ready.
even if he does fumble his way back into the minors he'll at least have worked with alan trammel again for the first time since spring. ...at least. meh.

We all said at the beginning of the season this team was gonna kinda suck.
The kid said he wasn't nervous in the first game, but there were what? 12 people in the stands?
This kid impresses the fuck out of me at the plate. Not so much yet in the field but the scouts say he's good and I trust them over, say, us.

I still haven't figured out why Lou keeps playing Soriano. He was supposed to be done, finished, career over, unable to hit breaking balls (despite doing it his whole career).
Best hitter on the TEAM.
.340 BA, 18 X-Base Hits in 103 AB's, 17 runs, 7 HR, 20 RBI.
Looks like his defense is getting better than it was earlier in the year. I think I have a little theory on that. The guy played on practically one leg last year and was probably a little gun shy running in the OF, he spent most of last year babying it to try and help his team.
Some people will say that was selfish, i say it was gutsy. Its a hell of a lot easier and less painful to pack it up and go on the DL. I would rather have a guy wanting to play than a guy not wanting to play (ohh yeah i am looking at you Milton).
Injured, healthy, it doesn't matter Soriano will play for you no matter what. I can respect that.
Odd spot for this, but:

Even when he hurts the team by doing it? He was awful last year--the Cubs would've been better off with him on the DL getting healthy.
On the other hand, I can concede that Soriano has looked very good at the plate lately. His swing has gotten a lot quieter. Here's to hoping it's a full-time return to form.

Hoffpauir, Jake Fox, Sam Fuld, Brad Snyder (early in the year). Just because Lou went with Scales doesn't mean he was the only option. In addition, if Soriano admits he's hurt and goes to the DL, maybe he gets better, comes back after a month or two, and hits like the Soriano we see now. I'm not saying his choice was selfish or malicious, I'm just saying, in retrospect, it hurt the Cubs. Both he and the team would've been better off if he'd made a DL trip, even if that DL trip would've lasted all year.
