and the cubs let another sub-par pitcher off the hook in the first inning. and that was the highlight of the evening. i'm sure looking ahead to the rich hill playoff starts. the ones where he drives in his own runs. good thing this is only 1 game; bad thing is the brew-has finally won a game the same day the cubs were losing one. seems like a month since the gap was more than a game.

Howry will close at times but Demp will still get the bulk of the closing opportunities.

the voice of reason among Chicago's press corps with this bit... Deal unlikely: Despite breathless reports out of the electronic media Friday, it seems highly unlikely the Cubs will swing a waiver trade with the White Sox for outfielder Scott Podsednik.

i’m sure looking ahead to the rich hill playoff starts. the ones where he drives in his own runs. You do know that before last night, Hill has an ERA under 3 in the second half, right? Gosh, didn’t Matt Murton save us today? Neither did Lee, DeRosa, Theriot, Fontenot, etc. No one thinks that Murton will win every game for the Cubs. Stop being silly.

Hey, I just talked to that straw man No is always complaining about. He couldn't post because he was too busy making a diorama of Murton's most recent home run for his Murton shrine, but he wanted me to make sure to mention to you all that Murton is the greatest outfielder of all time, and that he should be given a 15-year, $380B contract with a $400M signing bonus.

Mr Az Phil, was just wondering if you attended the Mesa game last evening, because I heard our 12 th rounder Ryan Acosta made his debut, if you did, wondered what you thought? Also have you seen anymore of Guyer and it looks like our 14th rounder Russell will be there soon.

More pain than he would have liked growled in the shoulder. He spent the weekend at Wrigley Field and was ready to head back to Phoenix to get back to his rehab work at the Fischer Sports Medicine facility. In the back of his mind, he thought his career was over. "I had a horrible Friday, and I came up (to Wrigley) to pick up my stuff and said goodbye to the guys," Wood said. "I wasn't expecting anything good." That Monday in Phoenix, Wood was all set to hang it up. There was just this little business of throwing one more session to take care of, then he could call it a career. "I went in that Monday morning, I went in thinking this was it -- I was probably going to have surgery at the end of the week," Wood said. "I went in to go throw and see how it felt. Give it one more shot. I honestly expected (it was over) that day. I was ready to call (general manager Jim Hendry) and let him know what was going on."

#19- You do know that before last night, Hill has an ERA under 3 in the second half, right? the gist of my comment, dave, is that for whatever reason, starts by rich hill do not lead to chicago cubs victories. whether he pitches well or poorly, with or without soriano, with or without aram, with or without barrett and bowen and hill and kendall, the result is negative for the club. his most recent 10 starts, as per espn.com, show a team record of 4-6 with a personal record for hill of 1-3 with 6 no decisions. for the entire year, the cubs are 9-14 when hill starts. this, for me, inspires little confidence. in the team, not solely rich hill. team success is the standard and the goal, at least in my eyes. you may have a different take on things. these are merely one man's observations. make of them what you wish.

#22 rob- lou was pissed that sinatro did not make a big stink about the out call on murton, as per sunday trib. lou also said "that's not why we lost; we lost because they put up 13 runs in 3 innings".

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Lou doesn't start stretching out Dempster in hopes of eventually starting him. I think we'll see some 2, maybe 3 inning appearances from him. I'm more surprised that the media isn't making a bigger deal out of this.

Dempster and Marmol have been our 2 best relievers this year, doesn't really matter what inning they're used to me. I really think they're just trying to give Dempster more work and without a lefty anymore, going to play matchups a little differently i.e, in need of a groundball or K, Dempster would come in - in need of getting a lefty, use Howry, etc. Dempster does need more work though.

For some reason the Cubs give Rich Hill terrible run support (2nd worst in the league). That is hardly Hill's fault. Even last night, Rich Hill pitched pretty well and things got away from him in the 6th. I really am not worried about him.

RE #24 Oh DC, you done did it now. You brought up the idea that perhaps a team doesn't respond well to a certain pitcher. But there is no stat for that so no one here will believe it exists. I do. But there aren't many more. Also Rich Hill shows why he's s freaking frustrating. He just can't get that last out. I think he'll figure it out but he doesn't have it this year.

    Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

    Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

    They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

    The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does anybody else remind me of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.

    Which was my original premise. They won the trades but lost their souls. They no longer employ the Cardinal way which had been so successful for so long.

    STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

    Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

    In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

    The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.

    busch is having a really intense k-filled mini slump.  he deserves better after coming back to wrigley after that hot road trip.
