Catch-22

If you would have polled Cubs fans around the world at the beginning of the year and asked who would be happy if the team was tied for first place with 22 games to go, I'm sure there wouldn't have been one single dissenting hand raised. The team is certainly in a far better position than they were last year at this time, yet there isn't much joy in Cubville right now. We've got a 90-million dollar arm pitching with a ten-cent head, a power hitting lineup that can't hit home runs and a rip-roaring 3-4 record in September that feels like a 7 game losing streak. Yet today we stand on top of the NL Central and sure it's like being the valedictorian of a class of 6 kids who can't spell their names but it's still the top spot. And no matter how we've played of recent, we're in this race. A race that looks like it's being run by drunk turtles hopped up on meth, but a race it is nonetheless. 22 games to the promised land and all the Cubs have to do is catch 22 games of good luck (or good hitting or good pitching) and we'll be dancing in October.

I'm feelin' it, Rob. It starts today. I predict a 14-8 finish...that should be enough to pass the sleeping hares stoned off their asses (on HGH?) and asleep on the side of the road.

Over/under on how many wins to win the division from here out? 8? 9? Anyone think 13? LOL

This race reminds me more of this quote from one of my personal favs, "Dodgeball": "It's like watching a bunch of retards trying to hump a doorknob out there! " Or the entire group reminds me of the characters from this movie: Rat Race

my schizophrenic nature says hooray the cubs are in a pennant race but goddammit there should be no race at all, the cubs really ought to be on cruise control right now. glass half-empty, glass half-full; how's about shut-up and give me the whole keg?

glass half-empty, glass half-full; how’s about shut-up and give me the whole keg? * * * * * * * * * * at the risk of being mis-understood, this is a plea to the baseball team and not he inhabitants of this here establishment.

I hate Saturday night games. I don't want to wait all day, only to be let down once again. Z better get his head out of his ass and pitch like an ace, not a queen.

I'm saying Big Time for Big Z tonight. This is the one that's gonna start the sprint to the end. FU Brewers and Cardinals, suck our tailpipe!

So everything Ankiel did was legal? Then why don’t the Cub’s get in on that? It was legal (i.e. not banned by MLB), but it now is.

He comes up, clobbers the ball. They don’t test for it. Dude is still using it. And you know that how? Because he hits the ball hard? Come on...

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?
