Glad to see Lee back in the lineup. Hoping beyond hope that Zambrano will show up and not blow up. I thought Loretta was a bad #5 hitter but now we have Skip Shumaker.

Reds 4-0 off Ben Sheets with only one out... Eckstein out with a sore back Soriano walks on a full count...when pigs fly. Then Molina throws him out easily, is this his first steal attempt since his quad injury?

Z: 1st inning... 14 pitches, 3 up-3 down 5 pitches to Miles, GO 4-3 5 pitches to Ankiel, K 4 pitches to Pujols, 60 6-3

Z: 2nd inning… 16 pitches, 4 up-1BB 30 pitches/2 innings 6 pitches to Edmonds, BB 3 pitches to Shumaker, GO 3U 1 pitch to Spezio, GO 3U 6 pitches to Molina, GO 4-3

Z: 3rd inning… 9 pitches, 4 up-1 single 39 pitches/3 innings 1 pitch to Wainwright, single off Zambrano 3 pitches to Ryan, K 2 pitches to Miles, P6 3 pitches to Ankiel, P4

Z: 4th inning… 9 pitches, 3 up-1 single-1 DP 48 pitches/4 innings 5 pitches to Pujols, single to Ramirez 2 pitches to Edmonds, DP 6-4-3 2 pitches to Schumaker, GO 3U

Z: 5th inning… 13 pitches, 4 up-1 BB 61 pitches/5 innings 6 pitches to Spezio, BB 1 pitch to Molina, F8 3 pitches to Wainwright, P3 (bunt) 3 pitches to Ryan, GO 5-3

Z: 6th inning… 7 pitches, 4 up-1 HR 68 pitches/6 innings Miles 2 pitches, L5 Ankiel 3 pitches, GO 6-3 Pujols 1 pitch, HR Edmonds 1 pitch, GO 4-3

Z: 7th inning… 14 pitches, 3 up-3 down 82 pitches/7 innings 2 pitches to Schumaker, GO 3-1 6 pitches to Spezio, K 6 pitches to Molina, P4

ESPN game cast has him at 88 pitches through 7. Pitching very well tonight Wainwright now out of the game

Z: 8th inning… 13 pitches, 4 up-1 single 95 pitches/8 innings Cairo 6 pitches, F9 Ryan 2 pitches, GO 4-3 Miles 2 pitches, single to left Ankiel 3 pitches, F9

WAY TO GO BIG Z!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now let's finish these fucking red birds!!!

I'm counting pitches with tivo...so unless comcast isn't showing 2 strike foul balls...I'd say I'm accurate

Len/Bob said Z has 101 pitches...it's a moot point if he's not pitching the 9th.

WARD BUSTS IT OPEN!!!!!!!!!!! WOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JOY! JOY!JOY!JOY!JOY!JOY!JOY!JOY!JOY!JOY!

compare and contrast Feliz Pie vs DWard going from the batters box to 2nd. Both things of beauty proving beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Credit to Pie - he came through in a key situation and set up the entire inning. And his baserunning was part of it too, taking third on that chopper to SS.

It is going to be tough to trust Dempster in a big game down the stretch or in the playoffs the way he is pitching. Damn...

Tying run to the plate...FUCK!!!!!!! Get someone up!!!

I had the good fortune to sit in the row behind the dugout at Wrigley not too long ago. Dempster has to be one of the nicest guys, humble, talking to the fans and smiling and just being a good man. Can we please find a total antisocial asshole to close games?

I certainly don't see Lou making an "official" closer change this late in the season....

Tying run in scoring position, winning run on third. WTF!!!

CUBS WIN (Hold on more like it)!!!!! BREWERS LOSING 6-3!!! WOO!!! Up 1 in the loss column with 15 games to go. GO CUBS!!!

he could be the nicest guy on the planet. who gives a rat's ass...he's not ready to pitch in meaninful ballgames. how much more evidence do we need?

i know, but i dont see anyone else there to do the job...i'm not happy about it but what can you do...and game =)

Oh man I can't take this....we're Cubs fans again because?

My heart was racing when that ball went up the middle. On MLBtv i couldn't tell how hard it was hit and thought for a second it was going to get through. Man, I need to get a beer.

I'm numb The capability to think is only gradually returning. However, let's be positive. We dodged a bullet in the ninth that we shouldn't have had to do, but they won. Z was magnificent, and came up huge in a money game. Shine on you crazy diamond. Loved the homers and Pie and Ward in the ninth. Big, big win. Cards now 6 out. Hope Lilly comes up big tomorrow. Go Reds!

Len asked it on TV...Is Ronny okay? Seriously, is he alive? I swear this team is trying to kill him. A couple years ago when Jerome Williams was choking, I was listening to Pat and Ron and Ron says, "Is it never easy, Patrick? Can it never be easy?" Give the guy a break. I Heart Daryle Ward

brewers lose- two 9th inning nailbiters in ten minutes span. Is this what we've been hoping for all season- a meaningful september? why do I feel so queasy?

wow.....kinda parallel games..... what an enormous day. one more finishes the cards, two more puts the cubs in great shape, three more and they're on their way. personally, i'm excited to see marshall again finally tomorrow. what a night. THANKS Z!

Z was magnificent, low pitch count including one 7 pitch inning (and that was the 6th when he gave up the HR to Pujols). No more than 4 batters in any inning he pitched. Only two walks. No tantrum when he was pinch hit for..although Dempster might find a horses head in his bed tonight.

Set a personal best tonight -- held my breath for 8 minutes and 45 seconds in the ninth inning. Anyone still wondering why Dempster doesn't use his fastball more? Because it goes about 400 feet. Interesting move by LaRussa to force Lou's hand on Z -- despite Ward's big hit, it almost worked. Man, this is great/awful/nauseating/exhilerating!

Z has won two starts in a row (following five straight losses). Got 13 ground ball outs tonight. I love it when he pitches like that. Cubs have won 3 in a row.

held my breath for 8 minutes and 45 seconds in the ninth inning. ===== billybucks: now THAT is Cubbie BLUE!

An excellent Earl Weaver chain smoking reference.

I think it’s a bit of a chicken or egg scenario. Did they make these trades because they saw what was coming and weren’t impressed and knew to keep up with the demand for constant winning thru had to acquire impact players? Or did those additions cause a failure of resource allocation elsewhere.

In addition, the whole they traded to acquire a star, that’s precisely what organizations should do if they feel they’re a piece away. Keep developing talent, but sometimes you need to supplement that talent. It’s what the best run organizations do. Atlanta does it. Houston in their prime run did it. Nationals during their prime run did it. Of course dodgers did it. Boston and Philadelphia too. Hell, the Cubs did it when they won. There’s no team that has had sustained success that has solely relied on their own internal development. It just doesn’t happen. I wouldn’t fault St Louis for that. What I suspect happened is in that 2020 season, in an effort to save money, they cut budget from developing and scouting. Or maybe the wrong guys got poached by other orgs. Regardless, blaming the acquisition of two of the best players of their generation for peanuts, seems off base to me.

I do agree that we’ve more or less come to the same conclusion, but our paths to that conclusion contain almost no crossover. I think we can also agree that seeing the cardinals struggle brings a warmth to our hearts.

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?
