Cubs Learn Pleasures of a Walk in the Park

Leon Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, scoring pinch-runner Darwin Barney with the winning run, as the Cubs AZ Instructional League team edged the Oakland A's Instructional League team 5-4 this afternoon at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa. The Cubs spotted the A's an early four-run lead, as 21-year old Venezuelan RHP Hernan Ramos (signed as a NDFA out of Ellsworth CC in Iowa at the August 15th deadline) was roughed up for four runs on three hits, a walk and a HBP in the top of the third. But the Cubs came right back, scoring one run in the bottom of the 3rd on a two out RBI single by Leon Johnson following a double by Bryan Jost, and three more in the bottom of the 4th on a lead-off triple into the RF corner by Marwin Gonzalez, followed by a trilogy of RBI doubles slammed off the outfield fence by Josh Donaldson, Cliff Andersen, and Jovan Rosa. The game remained a 4-4 tie going into the bottom of the 9th, when Josh Vitters led-off with a line single to LF. With Darwin Barney pinch-running for Vitters at first, Jovan Rosa failed three times trying to execute a sac bunt, and struck out. But Drew Rundle picked-up his teammate, bouncing a single between first and second into RF, sending the speedy Barney to third. With the tying run on 3rd base and only one out, Gian Guzman struck out swinging, but Bryan Jost worked a walk on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases, setting the stage for Johnson's grand base on balls. Here is today's abridged box score (Cubs players only) LINEUP: 1. Leon Johnson, CF (1-3, 2 RBI, BB, SH) 2. Mark Reed, 1B (0-4) 3. Marwin Gonzalez, SS (1-4, R, 3B) 4A. ROB G: Josh Vitters looks OK at 3rd base so far. His arm is fairly strong but isn't real accurate, and he doesn't have much range, but his glove is solid. He also has below-average speed on the bases. But his bat speed has improved a lot since his sluggish debut in the AZL in August. He's been driving the ball lately. And Josh Donaldson is (in my opinion) the best all-around offensive player (AVG, SLG, and OBP) in the Cubs minor league system right now. Awesome, awesome power. A young Paul Konerko. If we have occasion to rank the Cubs prospects sometime this off-season, Donaldson will be my #1. If Donaldson can remain a catcher, Cubs fans will be ecstatic. And if he has to eventualy move to 1B (Derrek Lee's contract expires after the 2010 season), he will hit enough to play 1B. And to think Donaldson was selected with a compensation pick awarded to the Cubs after the Dodgers signed Juan Pierre. Thank you Ned Colletti! The Marlins can keep Mitre, Nolasco and Pinto, and the Dodgers can have Pierre. I'll take Donaldson over all four of them any day.

carmenfanzone — October 2, 2007 @ 6:40 pm No playoff roster yet? Maybe the have a few tricks up their sleeve? ====================== CARMEN F: The Cubs have until 10 AM tomorrow to submit their roster for the NLDS, so I would imagine they will probably take the full amount of time before submitting it.

Wow, AZ Phil. I knew the guy was a good prospect, but wow. That good, you say? Well, now there's something to get excited about.

[...] unknown wrote an interesting post today!.Here’s a quick excerpt… two outs in the bottom of the 9th, scoring pinch-runner Darwin Barney with the winning run, as the Cubs AZ Instructional League team edged the Oakland A’s Instructional League team 5-4 this afternoon at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa. … [...]

Soto to start Game 1 apparently.... Roster appears to be: Soto, Lee, Derosa, Theriot, Ramirez, Soriano, Jones, Floyd, Murton, Kendall, Pie, Fontenot, Cedeno, Ward Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, Dempster, Marmol, Howry, Wood, Eyre, Weurtz and Hart.

Are you crazy? This roster sucks! It's weak! It's terrible and pathetic to boot. You must be new here.

I've gotta say that's probably exactly the way I would have drawn it up. I'm not sure if there's a clear winner between Fontenot's bat and Cedeno's bat (Fontenot's season #'s are better, but Ronny's been better lately), but it's nice to have the flexibility that Ronny gives you by being able to play 2B and SS.

no marshall, eh... he gets 3 appearances in Sept. then off to the glue factory. fontenot AND cedeno insted of either/or? pie? guess a pinch runner is handy. takes monroe's slot...pie barely worked lately, but monroe's work wasnt exactly good stuff. all that crap aside, its great the cubs have enough excess talent that these decisions were a little harder than they could have been. good to see ward's ready to go, too. hope to see a bunch RH pitching cuz there's a lot of LH bats the cubs gonna be throwing at ARZ.

BTW, Korean OF Hae-Seong Kook (pronounced "cook"), signed last month by Cubs Pacific Rim Scouting Coordinator Steve Wilson, has arrived at Fitch Park and is taking BP. He joins fellow Korean Dae-Eun Rhee at Instructs. (Rhee is a highly-regarded RHP signed by Wilson last July).

AZ PHIL This is quite a quote, "The Marlins can keep Mitre, Nolasco and Pinto, and the Dodgers can have Pierre. I’ll take Donaldson over all four of them any day." I'm countin' on you to be right!

25 games played with a -85 run differential.  insane.

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.

WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

    White Sox DFA'd Bailey Horn.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).

But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

Oh my, now I will have nightmares of me sitting in the bowels of the Wrigley security detention cell.

    One more thing...

One of the reasons I come to this site...

...in addition to Arizona Phil, who is, as we all know, a treasure trove of well-written fresh information, honest evaluation, and sneaky-subtle humor regarding the entire Cub organization...

... is CubbyBlue and Tim's fantastic and timely visual takes on the Cubs (to be fair, he does have a much broader Chicago-flavored brush well beyond the Cubs).  Thanks for so many memorable images.  I am fortunate to own (one of my prize possessions) a print that I framed (55/200) of "The Last Out" with KB's shit-eating grin as he fields the series winning out of the 2016 WS.

Tim, will you visit me if I do the text security thingy and description: Tim S? Or will I find myself in a Cub detention cell.

i.e. "or send a text message to 773-839-**** with the keyword "Friendly" and include your seat location and a description of your issue.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!
