Samardzija May Get First Start

UPDATE: Looks like Lou made up his mind after the first game and it will be Sean Marshall getting the start on Sunday versus the Marlins.

Just a little scheduling note, that Lou has tabbed either Jeff Samardzija or Sean Marshall for Sunday's start against the Marlins due to today's doubleheader. That is if Marquis cannot go on short rest.

"I can't bring Harden back on short rest, but I can bring Marquis back possibly," Piniella said Wednesday. "By him pitching the day game, it gives him a little longer time. If not, we'll either pitch Samardzija or pitch [Sean] Marshall."

Other than possibly using Marquis on short rest, there was another reason Harden will pitch tonight's nightcap.

"I know he's told us his preference would be to pitch at night and in cooler weather," Piniella said

As always, blame Canada.

Does it make a difference that Samardzija is now pitching?

Maybe Lou pulled Marquis with an 8-2 lead so he can go on Sunday?

samardiza throwing 3 innings today won't keep him from starting Sunday, but Marquis only threw 93 and he'll get an extra day off for his next start if he does go Sunday. So I'm guessing Marquis..

if ninja does start he needs to be stretched out...all he's had is a string of 10-40 pitch outtings since he's come up.

dont think he'd be a prime candidate, though he does need to be "auditioned" there for next season.

I'd be willing to bet it will be Marquis starting Sunday, too.

i HATE these freaking braves, but apparently not as much as they hate soriano.

i really hope this doesn't get into a ridiculous situation the last two games. the braves are out of it and really don't care what they do in terms of suspensions, ejections, etc.

remember the insanity of that sunday night game with renteria hitting fontenot, lilly getting ejected for no real reason. all that after soriano hit three homers friday night and then got hit to start saturday.

lilly pitching tomorrow, could be a dangerous situation if bobby cox has a bug up his ass which i'm sure he will.

just chill out, no suspensions needed for this team right now.

It'd be great if the Cubs had a clubhouse meeting now to reinforce exactly that.

Normally I would agree with with you, but this crap has been going on for 2 seasons now and trying to hit Soriano in the head is the last straw for me. Somebody from the BP needs to nail Larry in the nightcap.

Anybody see the pitch to Sori? How bad was it? I thought Renteria's play last year was one of the cheapest shots I have ever seen.

Nice to see Geo's bat back in action, and with some pop.

Your turn, Kosuke.

It was a hummer aimed directly for his head. He was lucky to get out of the way unscathed.

Any reason for the pitch other than the Cubs scored a lot of runs in game one?

soriano's habit of looking at his shots smiling like a 5 year old in awe of himself.

that said...soriano smiles like a 5 year old pretty much full-time.

reminds me of "classic pedro martinez"...the guy that was in a perma-good mood that took things and rolled with them.

the pitch at his head was probably supposed to be destined for his ribs, but soriano took it REALLY well. he just stepped back and...well, he smiled like a 5 year old.

soriano probably knew what it was about and didn't freak out about it "missing a little high"...very classy/cool stuff you (well, at I do) wanna see outta one of your star power hitters in a pennant chase.

didn't see it, but soriano gawked at HR that ended up hitting the wall and he settled for a single. He supposedly attempted to steal second base after that as well.

...yeah they were showing it on the Atlanta broadcast. Chip started talking about a hope that things don't escalate, then the other dude justified the near-beaning by ripping into Soriano's HR trot. He really doesn't like Soriano. I hate HR trots too, but I still can't understand why everyone hates Soriano so much; he seems like a really nice dude.

Yeah, but as we mentioned in the chat, Fonzie deserved it (not to the head, though) - he basically posed on a ball that turned out to be a single, then was making movements towards stealing 2nd after the game was way out of reach. Don't pull an Ozzie, Lou.

How 'bout that Samardzija?

Wasn't that long ago that he was having all kinds of problems at the AA level.

Very early yet, but he has been a great boost.

numbers and stats tend to have a hard time showing a physical progression of talent except in hindsight. he's had a crazy break since he "got his shit together".

i'm a little concerned about how much he uses his fastballs, but when he's got one that's mid90s with that kind of that's one hell of a starting point to build a pitching career around.

Stats lie sometimes. Simple as that. He was damn near MLB-ready when we first saw him in spring training '07. His 2-seamer looked every bit as wicked as Zambrano's. You just like to see him learn to control that pitch over time.

It's my understanding that he struggled to get hitters out in the lower levels because they had him working on his secondary pitches and so he wasn't focusing on using his best pitch (the power sinker) to get people out. The closer he got to the big leagues, the more they allowed him to pitch the way he normally would.

I'd much rather see a reliever somehow fall off the mound and throw a beaner at Cox's head; he may be a great manager, but he's also a world - class d-ckhead.

I think it is ok to say "dickhead" at the renewed TCR.

Besides, I am sure you are merely referring to the head of the Reds pitching coach, Dick Pole.

you can't say dick pole on the internet, dude.

Are you saying he's an [censored]hole?

I wouldn't mind seeing someone pull a Pedro to his Popeye at this point. It's getting re[censored]ulous.

(At the same time, I'd much rather he run more and showboat less, he almost [censored]ed up a double a couple weeks ago against the brewers because he thought it was out. HE didn't start running until he saw the donut at first base pointing the outfield throw to second.

I think this team has no balls. Chipper better get one in the back sometime before we leave atlanta.

Braves have nothing to lose by fucking with the Cubs. Cubs have everything to lose by fucking with the Braves. There is NOTHING to be gained by going head hunting for Chipper (or anyone else for that matter). All that does is risk injury to a Cub if they retaliate, and can put a key pitcher on the bench for a week, with the Brewers (yes, that "terrible team" of yours that is about to win their 8th in a row) right behind the Cubs.

That's the type of shit that was the beginning of the Cubs collapse in 2004 when the Astros got in Barrett's head.

As Ozzie would say, "ey, you gotta play de games, and I don' know, but we steel gotta play da Royals plenty more times, so we'll see, Okayee?"

Like Desi Arnez as Ricky Riccardo, but without all that pesky baggage of intelligence.

  • Cubs acquired Rex Brothers. Awesome fit for this team. Wander Cabrera going to COL.

  • "MLB announces #Cubs Minor League RHP Tanner Griggs receives 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for amphetamine"

    2014 12th rounder...

it's hard to know who to blame...on one hand he's a baseball player, on the other he sells cars in the offseason...either job leads to amphetamine abuse. =p

  • Thanks PHIL! I thought only the Cubs had control until the last day of the MLB 2015 Season.

  • that's awesome...makes me look forward to hearing theo talk some more about how the team needs to be creative with finances because money is tight.

  • See What The Cubs Are Building This Off-Season For Wrigley Plaza, Clubhouse

  • CUBBIES-4-EVER: It's not unusual for a PTBNL to be chosen after the Rule 5 Draft from the list of Rule 5 eligible players who were not selected. That way, a club gets a player they like (perhaps somebody like OF Jeffrey Baez) without the cumbersome Rule 5 roster restrictions that go with a Rule 5 Draft pick.

  • Clayton Richard is absolutely, positively NOT a free-agent. He is under club control through the 2016 season.

  • Haren was 4-2 with a 4.01 ERA with the Cubs. Seems like he worked out just as expected.

  • Did they ever say or who the PTBNL or cash decision on Rodney was or who was the PTBNL in the Austin Jackson deal was yet? Neither was worth whatever they gave up. Cahill and Richard were the only two good "deadline" deals they made. Hunter (given Lake was the odd man out by far and taking up a roster spot) and Haren weren't worth it.

  • says he is, site says he's a Cub, great cooperation between the 2 sites, weird

  • The drafting of Shea at #1 was a sign of things to come -- an undersized white linebacker who's not particularly fast; lets make him an NFL defensive end! Just idiotic. When the best thing you can say about your #1 pick is that he has a "high motor", that's a problem...that's what you should say about late-round picks.

  • Not AZ PHIL but after being DFA'd by the Cubs (after they got him from the Pirates in the "I get a chance in the Majors clause"), the Cubs re-signed him for the remainder of the season. I do not believe service time is an issue for him, so he is eligible to opt for Major League Free Agency - which he is doing and the Cubs or someone else will sign him to an MLB deal. AZ PHIL please correct this if you see fit - but that is the most current info that I'm aware of.

  • To also be fair to Emery, wtf do you draft Shea McLellin as a #1, Jonathan Bostic in the same draft, let Peppers go in lieu of signing Jared Shit-Head, Brandon Hardin, Evan Rodriguez, Isiah Frey, on and on...

I will give him credit for Kyle Long - who is like my favorite player (what does THAT say about the team - but he did throw in the 90's as a former pitcher), and Jeffrey.

  • Geo Soto leaves the WSux and signs with the Angels who lost Chris Ianetta to the Mariners.

Freed... The Angels also promoted Bobby Scales from director of player development to special assistant

  • AZ PHIL- Is Clayton Richard a free agent or not? One site I see he is, on another no. MLB has him listed as a free agent, Cot's contracts says he is a FA, baseball-reference says he's not, but Cubs have him on active roster. I know that he is just short of MLB 6 years service by just like 15 days, but that doesn't always matter.

  • Except that he gave up Russell and McKinney for a half-season of Hammel...
