Diamondbacks Court Disaster for Cubs at Fitch Park

Dundee-Crown HS alum Ryan Court reached base five times on two doubles, a single, and two walks, leading the Diamondbacks to an 11-4 drubbing of the Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ.

D'backs Stephen Drew (2011 broken ankle rehab) arrived at Fitch Park after the game started and played the middle three innings at shortstop, batting once each in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings.

Facing LHP Hunter Ackerman, Drew walked in the 4th, grounded out 4-3 in the 5th, and reached base on an HBP in the 6th. He also committed a fielding error at SS in the bottom of the 5th that eventually resulted in an unearned run scoring for the Cubs.

SS Junior Lake (back injury suffered during Spring Training) continued his EXST rehab in today's game, playing shortstop for all nine innings (started one DP and was the middle-man in another) and batting once each in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 8th innings.

Lake went 1-6, grounding out 6-3 in the 1st, flying out F-8 in the 2nd, flying out F-9 in the 3rd, flying out F-7 in the 4th (near-HR caught up against the LF fence), reached base on the Stephen Drew E-6 error in the 5th before stealing second and scoring on a Yasiel Balaguert double, and (finally) lining a single to left in the 8th.

In three EXST games this week since returning to action, Lake is 3-17 with a double, a walk, four strikeouts, three runs scored, and two stolen bases (one CS). He has not made an error.

None of the Cubs pitchers were effective today, but LHP Brian Smith really had an outing to forget, allowing eight baserunners (four hits and four walks, plus a wild pitch) without recording an out.

Phil,

===========================

JOHN B: Junior Lake looks very comfortable both at the plate and in the field. He had two hits in the intrasquad game today, and has made all the required plays in the field (so far) without any hiccups.

I expect him to be assigned to Tennessee very soon.

some speculation on mlbtr that DLee will sign a minor league deal with the Brewers now that Gamel is out.

maybe they can trade for DeRosa when Rickie Weeks gets his annual injury?

...and then there is The Riot question.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/M...

DLee at Miller Park always reminds me of this game I attended in 2005 when he went 3-for-4 with 2 HRs to raise his average on June 23 to .395 but also lined out with the tying run on base to end the game.

I don't care if he signs with the White Sox or Cardinals and hits 105 home runs, I still wish the man all the best.

Agreed. DLee was/is a class act.

Marmol out of closer role-Sveum

Hey look, Sveum gave Marmol 12 opportunities to see if he could fix his stuff, it didn't work, and now he's out. My god this Sveum is awful...

My sarcasm detector is not working great. Should I turn it on here, or are you saying Sveum is awful?

High order of probability that this is sarcasm.

Thank God.

  • Classic ending, about 12:11 AM, CST. 5 hours, 3 minutes. Both teams have bases loaded, no out situations in the last inning.

    Magic #19.

Last man on the bench, Montero gets it done.

Baez lucky to not have hurt his hand with headfirst slide on play at plate in 12th inning.

  • Everyone remember Starlin Castro dropping or misplaying just about every ball near second base that involved a tag?

Javier Baez is the opposite of that.

  • on the wild pitch thing, did they really call that a wild pitch on Jansen that Heyward scored on Friday? If so, I don't know what a passed ball is anymore.

  • Let's see -- up 3-0, at home, Jake on the mound annnnd....compare and contrast 2015 to 2016. Bleh.

Hopefully, the Pirates will uncork a series of 9th inning wild pitches.

  • modern media

@BNightengale: Former #MLB pitcher Dan Haren will be throwing to Tim Tebow tomorrow during his tryout in LA, he announced.

[email protected](dan haren): @BNightengale nope, I was offered the opportunity and declined.

@ithrow88 Oh and memo to my agent, @bvanwagenen: Pitching to Tim Tebow tomorrow DOES NOT count as getting me a real job offer.

  • the factual correction on your mistakes on your post that I barely bothered to read the first time because it had nothing to do with anything I wanted to talk about is indeed a sign of my degenerative brain condition. I appreciate the safety tip and will be looking into with extreme urgency now.

  • Fwiw, Billy Hamilton's actual WAR numbers that relate to the ones that I posted for Mike Trout are:

    • 2014: 2.5
    • 2015: 1.0
    • 2016: 2.6

But by all means #crunchsplain on the stupidity of WAR while exaggerating your points. I can't wait to read more.
