Stewart Stick Helps Cubs Whip A's at Fitch Park

Ian Stewart singled, doubled, drove-in a run, and scored another, Jacob Rogers singled twice and scored twice, Garrett Schlecht hammered an RBI double and walked, and Justin Marra ripped an RBI single, walked, and scored a run, leading the Cubs to a 7-4 victory over the Athletics in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ.

Continuing his Extended Spring Training rehab assignment, Stewart played 3B for six innings and batted five times (once in each of the first five innings), going 2-5. He grounded out 3-U in his first AB, struck out swinging in his 2nd and 5th PA, roped a line-drive single to right in his 3rd AB, and crushed an RBI double into the RF corner his 4th time up. He didn't handle any chances at 3rd base, but he ran the bases at full tilt, showing no ill effects from the quad strain that sidelined him for most of MLB Spring Training.

The Defensive Play of the Game featured (once again) CF Rashad Crawford, who sprinted at full speed toward the infield and then made a diving catch in short center of what would otherwise have been a bloop single.

Slapped with a five-game suspension following an on-the-field incident in a game at Clearwater a couple of days ago, Daytona Cubs RF Jorge Soler is now at Fitch Park. He took BP on Field #1 with the recent-arrivals from the Dominican Academy (Acosta, Caro, K. Encarnacion, and F. Sanchez) during the EXST game. Whether he will remain in Mesa beyond the five-game FSL suspension remains to be seen...

z.rosscup (AA) 3ip 2h 0bb 8k over 2 appearances...day-yam.

CRUNCH: The Iowa Cubs have no lefties in their bullpen, so don't be surprised if Rosscup gets moved up sooner rather than later.

Also, LHRP Hunter Cervenka (acquired from Boston in the Marlon Byrd deal last season, but sidetracked during Minor League Camp with a forearm strain) was throwing 93-94 MPH yesterday at Talking Stick, so he should be about ready to leave Arizona and move up to AA Tennessee (especially if Rosscup gets promoted to Iowa).

1ip 0h 1bb 0k tonight...love is over. send him down to A ball.

Is Soler allowed to take part in drills and such?

BOB R: Yes.

Are they letting him lead the Charge the Opponents Dugout With a Bat drill? He seems to have some natural talent for that.

A-rod's in trouble

Investigators for Major League Baseball have uncovered what they believe is evidence that a representative of Alex Rodriguez purchased medical records from a person connected to a South Florida anti-aging clinic that is suspected of providing performance-enhancing drugs to a number of major leaguers, according to two people briefed on the matter.

Still a HOFer. #pinstripes #hypocrisy

"According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, Carlos Quentin will be suspended eight games for charging the mound against Zack Greinke on Thursday night."

what a crock of shi...

richie sexson got 6 games for charging the mound and throwing his helmet at the pitcher...youk got 5 games charging porcello and throwing his helmet at him. maybe if quentin threw his helmet he would have gotten 2-3 less games suspended.

hell, juan marichal got 8 games for going after roseboro with a f'n bat.

blake dewitt getting his 1st AB as a brave...2 on (1st/2nd), 0 out, top 9th, down by 2.

lulz...they have him sac bunt.

The day before yesterday I was pretty annoyed with Castro's at bat against Romo. Yesterday, it was almost like he was talking to himself while facing Romo again, saying, "oh no you don't - not again" as Romo led off trying to get him fishing again on the lower outside of the plate. I was listening to the SF guys because I enjoy them and I was surprised Krukow didn't mention the change in Castro's approach - they were more concerned with the seagulls - but that at bat was very heartening. Once Romo got behind in the count, Krukow thought Romo would have to challenge him and he did, and Castro hit it pretty good - luckily Pagan really hates that wall.

Fukikawa on 15 day disabled list? Those James Russell for closer rumors will really heat up now.

  • The Mariners recalled RHP Tony Zych from Triple-A Tacoma. First big league action for the former Cub prospect.

  • ah, the fair weather fans are back at wrigley.

long popout to CF, not even on the track, and 1/2 the place was popping and cheering like it was gonna end up out of the park.

  • well, that didn't take long.

    11 pitches, voto HR...thankfully, solo.

  • It'll be interesting to see if Baez is still a whirling dervish at the plate. He's rocking it good in AAA, and I've read some good stuff, so fingers crossed.

  • More bitching about him being traded than Archer

  • good...he's been stinking up the durham bulls for a couple years now.

  • Rays DFA Hak-Ju Lee.

Olt for Lee and the circle of life is complete

  • obviously....

dusty would have to start baez because both lastella + castro would be pitching because all the other pitcher's arms would have fallen off months ago. it would piss dusty off because baez is a rookie and theo couldn't go out and get him a 39 year old DH to play 2nd. i imagine it would be a 2-box-of-toothpicks night.

lou would have quit his job already, so that's irrelevant and a trick question.

  • just a theoretical thought...if Dusty was manager (WWDD) or if Lou (WWLD) was manager...

would Javy Baez be in tonight's lineup?

    my thought is:

Dusty... Bonifacio would have been brought up and started at 2B
Lou..."I like playing the kids, really I do, but but but Jonathan Herrera really needs to play to stay sharp."

  • He was replying to tweet who said error should have been hit

  • Added a 'recent comments' block to the bottom of every 'story' page. Thought it might be helpful. Comments welcome

  • Jeff Russell and Rafael Soriano DFA's to make room for the callups (Berry and Cahill)

  • The next 4 weeks should answer this for us. If Castro starts hitting again and neither Baez or La Stella perform, he'd be on a playoff roster. If not, and one of those other two guys does well, I wouldn't be surprised if he was left off. A key error or mental lapse in a one game playoff would be killer and he is too prone to them.

  • To put a finer point on it, Baez playing second and hitting 7th tonight.

  • "This is the show. We have certain expectations here. That's why you don't play." from a Tweet from Arrieta. I who do you think he is talking about.

    Whoa!
