@HasGarzaBeenTraded

Not yet...

Although I suppose they were as close as they could be yesterday, exchanging medical information on players and something turned up on one of the Rangers pitchers that caused the Cubs to squeeze the brakes. Names have been flying around, but Neil Ramirez, C.J. Edwards and Mike Olt seem to be the hottest names of late. Jeff Passan says the Rangers also showed interest in James Russell, although no one knows if he was part of what sounded like a 6-player deal...although once again, no one knows for sure.

Rumors be the teams will continue today to try and find a fit and that nothing in Garza's medical dossier caused a panic for the Rangers.

Indians not willing to move Chisenhall for Garza

I would rather hear Cubs not willing to move Garza for jizz in balls.

Also, crunch alert. Bedard thru 6, 2-2 tie no hits.

out of the game after 6.1ip...103 pitches.

Brian Roberts shouldn't be the only recent inductee into the Trades That Never Were Hall of Fame.

Jake Peavy is right up there on the list too...

Buster Olney‏@Buster_ESPN
Scouts are going to walk away impressed by Peavy, whose velocity reached the low-90s; two earned runs in six innings, 3 strikeouts, no walks

That's nice Buster. But the GM's also know that he could be on the DL with Kerry Wood-like regularity.

That's nice Buster. But the GM's also know that he could be on the DL with Kerry Wood-like regularity.

Yeah, I don't see Peavy's extra year of control as a good thing. I just threw it up there since he could be viewed as a Garza alternative to some team.

after today's ross wolf start...garza must be looking a little better...or anyone besides ross wolf.

5 hits in a row to start the 5th...awesome.

1-6, 0 outs...men on 1st/2nd.

can the cubs quit using j.borbon as a pinch hitter with men on?

i guess that .175 BA over the past 2.5 months is too awesome to pass up using him with men on...btw, .171 with men on total, .143 with RISP.

...and he pops out to shallow left with men on 1st/2nd.

neat.

give them some time to hopefully trade for some cap space I guess.

what an arm on that Lake!

Overthrew everyone, but...who cares!

At least he is not playing the infield!

Reminds me of some of AZ Phil's comments about his play -- very toolsy (plus plus arm) and he'll wow you one minute, then leave you shaking your head the next. I remember a young Sammy Sosa being like that. Any coincidence that he chose to wear Sammy's old number? Didn't think so.

Junior Lake requested uniform #22 but Garza is still wearing it. He was assigned #21. He is not the first to have it since Sosa.

(Jason Marquis (2007-08), Milton Bradley (2009), Tyler Colvin (2010-11), Luis Valbuena (2012), Joe Mather (2012), Scott Hairston(2013) and now Junior Lake)

I prefer my personal theories to be unencumbered by inconvenient actual facts, thank you... I was actually under the impression that Junior had requested 21 after reading a Muskat article (dangerous, I know), but I may have read more into it than was there. A glass or two of wine while surfing the 'net can do that to you.

Atlanta Braves‏@Braves
The Braves have selected RHP Kameron Loe from Gwinnett (AAA) and will wear #40. A corresponding move will be announced prior to today's game

Speaking of #22...This time he's being written about in the NY Times:

Then another anterior capsule tear shut him down once more. He has no immediate plans for surgery, just rest, but Louisville parted ways with him June 28.

After Prior’s latest setback, Baker told him he had not been that far from a return to the majors when his shoulder gave out. Several Reds relievers had been injured, creating openings on the roster. If Prior had been healthy, Baker could have recalled him.

This gives the Cubs the entire trade deadline to whittle down the spending gap that leads to 2014 draft penalties.

16 years old...never played legit competitive baseball in his life...leaves $2.2m on the table to sign with the cubs...

what the hell is going on there? that just sounds insane. are the cubs buying his parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, and uncles new houses or something? =p

Check out the Rolling Stone review as well. Pretty damn glowing!

Kris Bryant to make pro debut tonight for AZL Cubs.

Bryant went 0-for-3, made 3 errors. Pulled after 5th inning.

impressive. bob brenly approves.

Perfect. Certainly the Cub's Way on both accounts.

Bring him up!!

He's already a Cub!!

I see Greg Rohan showed up this weekend with the Arizon Cubs team.
Any idea if he's been hurt, or just not playing this year?

DUSTY: Greg Rohan had back surgery last off-season and has been rehabbing at Fitch Park since Minor League Camp. He is just starting to play in games now.

Ty Ty AzPhil!

http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/one-in-six-draft-picks-will-click/

How many of the nearly 900 players who signed out of this year’s draft might we expect to see in the majors one day? If recent history is any guide, then that answer is roughly one in six—or, to be precise, 17.2 percent of signed draft picks.

73% of 1st rounders reach the majors (that is play just one game)...about 40% of 1st rounders play at least 3 seasons.

@HasGarzaBeenTraded

still no btw...

Cool. Seems like the waggle is something that could be worked on fairly easily. No sense giving a pitcher an extra unnecessary advantage.

This is all speculation on my part, but I think they moved him up to AA to expose him. It looks like he had learned to overcome his weaknesses at high-A so they wanted to show him that his approach wouldn't work at higher levels.

Normally this could cause a kid to lose confidence, but I don't think Baez has that issue.

Junior Lake breakdown...

If you told me that Lake will be an All-Star four years from now, I'd believe it. If you told me he would be flailing at breaking pitches in Triple-A four years from now, I'd believe that too.

That seems about right. There does seem to be something about him, one of those intangibles, but the breaking ball is always the nail in a major league career coffin.

Rosenthal says Garza will not start tonight, deal near with Rangers.

Dont make us start him!!!

-Theo dragging Garza to mound

I hear it's for Profar, Olt, and M. Perez.

-edit- Passan says Olt is one of the players..for realz.

Fingers crossed there's a real workaround for Olt's eye! Guessing we'll see him soon, even if he doesn't see us. Ba dum.

Rosenthal: Olt, Edwards, and a third player.

Edwards! Yes!

Source: will acquire Triple A IF Mike Olt, Single A RHP C.J. Edwards and a third player from for Garza.

Give us the Royal Baby Boy, and we'll call it a deal.

Wow, one o-fer and three errors and Bryant already done.

Delete.

2m

Source: Final deal will be Matt Garza for three players as well as a player to be named later. 3B Mike Olt confirmed as one player.

Heard an interesting thing on 670 the SCORE today in Len Kasper's weekly visit.

HE said that the TheoJed group are remarkably patient and if they don't feel that they are getting the best deal for the Club, they will simply just make a qualifying offer and do this "all again next year".

It seems like this group may at least have a hint at knowing what they are doing? Or - maybe not. I am really curious what they saw in the Ranger's medicals...

So what is the deal with this new collective bargaining thing exactly?

I recall that should they lost the player, they would receive a n extra draft pick based on their record, ala the Pirates not signing Appel this year.

Where is AZ PHIL these days? Trying to stay cool?

[after posting I saw the "Breaking News"]

Additional confirmation:

"Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza was scheduled to pitch tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but that is no longer the case. He's been scratched from the lineup and a trade to the Texas Rangers is close, confirms Jon Heyman."

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/eye-on-baseball/...

Evan Grant via Lonestar Ball says third player could be Ramirez or Odor. And that the Cubs may get a PTBNL.

So how long before we actually know all 3 players and its confirmed?

The team really needs an "Odor" around?

every lineup he is in stinks

TR Sullivan says Rangers are getting a 2nd player.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130722&c...

Edit: It says they will "likely try to get a second player," whatever the hell that means.

Rizzo?

We have to have a player of two in the minors that they could bring up.

Passan: Third player is Justin Grimm.

Olt, Edwards, and Grimm is a very solid haul.

"Olt, Edwards, and Grimm is a very solid haul."

Bring.
Them.
Up.

Cubs also getting a PTBNL

Phil, when can he be brought up?

I have some breaking news...

My first TCR Scoop!! The Cubs and Rangers are nearing a deal for Garza. BANK IT!

So Olt...

Now I gotta find out more about this vision thing since this is actually apparently happening. I would have thought that was the hang up last time, but I guess not. I remember last year we were talking about an Olt for Garza and some of the guys here were really creaming their pants over the possibility.

Anyone know what Grimm's ceiling is? Or what his trouble has been? On name value alone, I like him more than "Tepesch".

ceiling is #3 starter...can reach mid-90's with fastball although sits at 91-92, good curve and change, but doesn't seem to get K's with that stuff. Still just 24 though....

Excitement for Garza trade quickly passed over by schadenfreude for Braun suspension.

  • good...he's been stinking up the durham bulls for a couple years now.

  • Rays DFA Hak-Ju Lee.

Olt for Lee and the circle of life is complete

  • obviously....

dusty would have to start baez because both lastella + castro would be pitching because all the other pitcher's arms would have fallen off months ago. it would piss dusty off because baez is a rookie and theo couldn't go out and get him a 39 year old DH to play 2nd. i imagine it would be a 2-box-of-toothpicks night.

lou would have quit his job already, so that's irrelevant and a trick question.

  • just a theoretical thought...if Dusty was manager (WWDD) or if Lou (WWLD) was manager...

would Javy Baez be in tonight's lineup?

    my thought is:

Dusty... Bonifacio would have been brought up and started at 2B
Lou..."I like playing the kids, really I do, but but but Jonathan Herrera really needs to play to stay sharp."

  • He was replying to tweet who said error should have been hit

  • Added a 'recent comments' block to the bottom of every 'story' page. Thought it might be helpful. Comments welcome

  • Jeff Russell and Rafael Soriano DFA's to make room for the callups (Berry and Cahill)

  • The next 4 weeks should answer this for us. If Castro starts hitting again and neither Baez or La Stella perform, he'd be on a playoff roster. If not, and one of those other two guys does well, I wouldn't be surprised if he was left off. A key error or mental lapse in a one game playoff would be killer and he is too prone to them.

  • To put a finer point on it, Baez playing second and hitting 7th tonight.

  • "This is the show. We have certain expectations here. That's why you don't play." from a Tweet from Arrieta. I who do you think he is talking about.

  • "This is the show. We have certain expectations here. That's why you don't play." --Jake Arrieta on Twitter.

    Whoa!

  • I'll check back in on a day that Starlin doesn't make three errors. But for now I would say him not making the playoff roster is a stretch. Who do you trust more than Starlin to be a RH backup middle infielder? Herrera has no bat at all, and Baez has been in AAA all season and may be as error prone as Castro and may strike out a giant proportion of the time he's at the plate. I'm also less than convinced that La Stella will step in and be a significant contributor. Starlin is at least a big part of the 2B picture for the remainder of the year.

  • Sadly, nothing is sticking to the wall. The only thing still lingering is the smell from their pitching outings.

  • i think they were just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

they wanted to push for the post-season without giving up anything. thank gawd for the cubs winning tear and SF's failure tear...hopefully that holds up until the season ends.

once we're into the post-season (if that happens) then it doesn't matter about the 4-5 slot pitchers. arguably, the pen is much more important at that point when it comes to anyone but the top-3 starters.

  • Signing Haren was very curious, at best. An over-the-hill fly ball pitcher can survive at Wrigley in April, May & June, when it's cold and the wind tends to blow in (i.e. the ballpark plays "big"). But, signing him to pitch at Wrigley in July, August & Sept., when it's warm and the wind tends to blow out...well, Theo, what did you expect? Gotta believe the Reds will be running up to the plate to get their swings against Haren tonight.

Come on, offense -- we're gonna need another 6-7 runs tonight!

  • ...or they could wait until tomorrow and haren can be DFA'd...maybe...probably not...sigh.

gotta imagine j.russell is on his way out at the very least.
