Hendricks gave up 1 ER in 7 innings against the Nationals last time around. The Cubs won it in the 9th on a Russell double. Last time out, Hendricks gave up 4 ER in 6 innings in Miami and took the loss in the game that ended 5-2.

Zimmermann went 7 innings and gave up 1 ER against the Cubs at Wrigley but didn’t factor in the decision. In his last outing, he kept the Blue Jays off the board for 8 innings and got the W in the 2-0 WAS victory. He will look really nice in Cubbie blue next year.

Rizzo has the best numbers against Zimmermann, 4-10 with a HR, and is now working a career-high 11-game hitting streak. Meanwhile, his 1.051 OPS is currently the third best in all of baseball, behind only Harper and Goldschmidt. Montero (7-19) also has had success against Zimmermann. Castro (4-22), Coghlan (4-19), and Fowler (3-17), not so much. The Nationals are 5-22 (.227) against Hendricks. Harper (8-20 in June) has a HR--his solo shot in the 7th last week against him, for which he managed to keep his helmet on.

Castro returns to SS, after a much-needed day off--I was in NYC getting a good bagel and seeing the Mad Men exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image and was sad to miss Russell’s debut there--and Russell gets a not-needed day away from SS.

In other news, Chris Denorfia (who I would never skip a bagel for) is back, and Szczur uses his frequent flyer miles for a trip back to Iowa. The walking boot has considerably reduced the swelling in Soler’s left ankle, and he is on target to return when he is eligible (June 18). And there are four days till the Javy watch begins in earnest.

The Cubs gained a little ground in the NL Central yesterday, courtesy of Clayton Kershaw, who can pitch against STL every day, as far as I’m concerned. Taking 3 from the Nationals on the road would be huge, so let’s do that.

After a day off tomorrow, the reeling Tigers are next on the trip. Detroit's pitchers have not been finalized, but we could see Sanchez and Greene, who have both been dreadful. Fortunately, we’ll miss Price, who beat the stink out of the White Sox yesterday.

Go Cubs!

Baez injured hand or finger in head first slid during SB. Dumb. In time for trade season.

Ash Marshall on Twitter (milb journalist/photographer) has several Marty Peavey (Iowa Cubs manager) quotes on Baez injury: Javier Baez jammed his left ring finger. He'll miss a couple of days if bruised/sprained, 4-6 weeks plus rehab if broken. Baez taken to local Iowa hospital for precautionary X-Rays on his hand. There's no good time for an injury, but especially with transition to 3B, timing was "not good, that's for sure". "You just feel like he's fixing to take off. You can almost sense it. You feel like he's about to blossom real quick." https://twitter.com/ashmarshallmlb That sounds about right regarding his finger injury. Just gotta wait until the X-Ray results come back.

Carl Edwards debuting Top 8th 2-2 Cubs and Cards. Man - he is really thin! I can see what all of the naysayers mean about his better fit for the bullpen.

rondon pitches the 8th (with a save situation intact) looks like strop might be the man...at least today...who knows...it could be d.ross

3 out of 4 from WAS...unf. hanging in the WC chase, but not in it. ready for that baez shwarb callup...seriously though, hope baez is good to go in a few days to a week. no game tomorrow...tigers on tuesday.

Bummer.

So stupid. I thought that they were really emphasizing NOT to do any head first slides? Maybe AZ PHIL could address what he's seeing... I am wondering if Theo will be firmly underlining this with all of the farm teams?

The mysterious case of Starlin Castro I was a believer of him as a shortstop but have quite a few doubts ,as Az.Phil has said he is a much better 2nd baseman,Russell is a much better SS,Baez is a much better SS then Castro. Do the Cubs play it out this year status quo Tell Castro he is gonna play some 2nd this year Or trade him this year I like Castro but for the first time we have better defensive options.

I have to believe Theo/Jed are seeing what we're seeing. This team is a WC contender entering the second week of June; to contend they need at least one starting pitcher; and LF is a problem (last hole in the lineup). Bullpen help would be nice but Strop, Grimm, Rondon, Russell, & Motte are getting it done most days. Getting Ramirez back by early July and possibly adding Edwards could have the same effect as a trade. I'm sure they're doing their due diligence on Hamels, Cueto, Price & Zimmermann. My personal preference would be Hamels because he's a TOR starter and under contract for 3 more years plus an option. The million dollar question is Amaro's trade demands. I can't imagine the Cubs need Philadelphia to send any money back so would there be a fit assuming Bryant, Russell, Rizzo, Soler & Schwarber are off limits. Could some combination of Castro or Baez, Almora, Alcantara or other Top 15 prospects swing a deal. If so, the rotation is solid, Schwarber plays LF by August, and Russell plays SS if Castro is dealt. Lots of ifs......or maybe Theo finds another Arrieta for a lesser cost.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.
