Arrieta threw 122 pitches and had what we like to call a complete game shutout on Sunday against the Twins. This matchup is a redo of the May 7 game in St. Louis, when Arrieta gave up 5 runs (4 earned) in 5.1 and took the loss. The Cards are 28-133 (.211) against him. Heyward is 5-12, Peralta is 6-22, Carpenter is 0-13.

Lackey cruised against the light-hitting Phills on Saturday and went 7 innings of one-run ball in the 10-1 win. In his May win against the Cubs, he went 7.2, gave up 1 ER, and struck out 10. Only Coghlan (7-12) has double digit ABs against him. Montero is 3-9.

Castro’s wife had a baby girl yesterday, and he’s back in. Congrats! Fowler and his ankle, too. Tomorrow we get Donn Roach (7-1, 2.21 for Iowa) in place of Wada.

Go Cubs!

rizzo gets his 30th HBP since his new "elbows over plate" stance in 2014. 15 last year, 15 this year...and counting.

this game... tied in the bottom 8th. STL's "luck"...i hate myself for being jelly as hell about it. #swag #yolo

dammit grimm... bottom 10th, 6 pitches in, guys on the corners, 0 out. sigh.

Game tied by a first career HR by a middle infielder, winning run scores on an error, Cubs 1-9 w/RISP....just another effing day in effing St. Louis.

Tonight we have Roach going for us. The last really good sinkerballer I remember for the Cubs was Rick Roachel. No, no, it was, never mind.

a guy that doesn't miss bats vs the cards...yeah, he's got a sinker, but there should be a good amount of contact. might be a good day to actually play herrerra at 2nd/SS...lol, not...seriously, why is he still on this team? there's some AA/AAA fodder that could do a better job all-around. they're only using him at 2nd/3rd anyway...hurry back lastella...or baez...

After the other 9 players signed leaving Bryan Hudson + the bonus penalty w/o losing draft pick should leave: $1,129,205, is that enough...????

"“I did the best I could to negotiate, but I didn’t have an agent and basically they’ve got you when they draft you after your senior year,” Brooks said. “They pressured me a little, but that’s OK. This is about the opportunity a lot more than it’s about money. I’ve got a lot of close friends who would love to have the chance I have to play pro ball. It was an awesome feeling being drafted.”" ...and that's the story of how the cubs signed a 7th round pick ($211,000) for $5,000. http://www.salisburypost.com/2015/06/12/baseball-brooks-signs-with-cubs/ nice piece on his signing.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

  • crunch (view)

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

  • crunch (view)

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

  • crunch (view)

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

  • crunch (view)

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

  • crunch (view)

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.
