Richard might be looking at his last start for a while, regardless of how he pitches. No pressure, there. He gave up 4 ER in 3 innings against the Cards after Hammel went down. It wasn’t pretty, but it was appreciated. It would have been borderline heroic, were it not also the Strop game--about which we will speak no more. The Reds are 7-29 against Richard.

Lorenzen gave up 2 ER in 6 innings in Miami for his second straight loss in his last outing. The Cubs are 5-16 against him. Fowler has a HR.

And of course Jackson got DFA’d yesterday to make room for Soriano.

Go Cubs!

I was at the Strop game (the scars linger) and actually felt bad for Richard. He clearly wasn't expecting to pitch, then had to get physically and mentally ready in a hurry. He wasn't good, but that was a very tough spot.

My friend in Philly says the word on the street is that Papelbon is coming to the Cubs for Edwin Jackson and Jake Stinnett. Probably not true.

Never mind: fake Twitter account. Are people that bored?

cubs being down in a close game makes me wonder if having teagarden stick around as the 3rd catcher is a good use of his roster spot. wonder if d.ross is "not quite, but good enough" healthy or something...

cubs seem to have lost the ability to field the ball in the 7th. soler + castro with back to back cubbery.

j.herrera pinch hitting with a man on 3rd and 1 out...laaaaaaaame is it 2014? 2013? 2012? -edit- extremely weak infield groundout to 1st...awesome

Someone was asking (Hagsag?) Tommy Birch ‏@TommyBirch Madison said that Tennessee INF Dan Vogelbach has a strained oblique. Estimates he'll be back sometime around the beginning of August. #Cubs

More Tommy Birch quoting Jaron Madison (Cubs director of player development), from a Des Moines Register article includes this update on Javy Baez...
“He’ll play in rehab games starting Thursday and then he’ll hopefully be back here in a little over a week,” Madison said before Iowa’s 7-1 win over the Round Rock Express Monday before an announced crowd of 5,464 fans at Principal Park. “Hopefully — assuming everything goes well.” Baez, who hasn’t played in a game since June 7, is on the disabled list with a non-displaced fracture in his left ring finger. Madison said that Baez, who has been in Arizona after spending a week with his family, could be back by July 28.
Also the Vogelbach oblique mention and expect DV and McKinney to stay at AA for the full season. http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/baseball/iowa-cubs/2015/0…

It's official -- Chapman is not human. Throwing 100+mph after throwing 44 pitches yesterday -- holy crap. Man, going into this game, if you told me Richard would leave with 2 outs in the 6th, with nobody on base, the Cubs leading and Grimm coming in....I would have gladly taken that. Bummer.

I just looked at the pitch he threw to Bruce. Middle of the plate, no movement, and he was ready. Just a meatball. He had nothing tonight. Grimm is one of those guys that you "hope" will keep the team from losing steam and you hope he doesnt have many of these nights. If his fastball is flat, even @94 like it was tonight, and down the middle of the plate...later.

We really need the big bats to start hitting HR with men on base the next couple of days -- Cincy should be a launching pad for Bryant, Rizzo and Soler.

r.soriano: 1ip 1h 1bb 0k (0r/er)...he was throwing 90/91, nothing special about the inning with the fastball or slider n.ramirez continues to not look so slick with 0.1ip 2h 0bb 0b (0r/er). his 1st appearance back from injury he looked sharp...since then, meh. it's only been 6 appearances, though.

mets + giants lose...so there's that at least. pit won and gained a game on the 1 slot for the WC.

Mark Gonzalez/Trib notes:
Extra innings: Catcher Miguel Montero’s left thumb was examined by a hand specialist in Phoenix. ... Zac Rosscup (left shoulder) had his rehab assignment transferred to Double-A Tennessee. ... Dallas Beeler likely will start the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.
