Beeler--aka, our 26th man--started the second game of a double dip on the 22nd (2 IP, 3 ER). In one of Joe’s better moves, he was pulled for a pinch-hitting Bryant in the third inning. The Cubs scored 5 that inning and went on to win 6-5. None of the Rockies have faced him.

Flande started the year in the minors (AA and AAA). This is his eighth appearance this year but the first start. Against the Cubs last year, he went 0-2 with a 3.83 ERA. The Cubs are 6-30 (.200) against him. Castro has a HR.

Other notes: Wada pitched 6 innings on Monday (2 unearned runs, 4 H, 6 Ks, 1 BB). Tulo (and LaTroy Hawkins, who was clearly the key to the deal) was traded yesterday to Toronto for Reyes. Butler vs. Lester to close out the set tomorrow.

Go Cubs!

6ip 4h 1bb 6k for wada last night in AAA...and we get beeler today in the bigs...beeler. speaking of the minors...i thought cj edwards was going to see occasional pen time and still start. he's done nothing but relief work this year (though a lot of it has been multiple-inning work). his workload is weird. he regularly works 2 innings and gets 3-4 days rest in between it.

12 pitches, man on 2nd, 0 outs, 3 runs already in... (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Well, this is a year to learn. We have learned everything we need to about Dallas Beeler. EDIT: And Rafael Soriano. Still struggling to figure out why he got the start over Wada.

after throwing crap nearly all season he has 3 decent games in a row in AAA somehow earning him some mlb starts. he's a right handed crapballer who's only tool is a fastball/cutter combo he throws at a similar speed hoping the batter guesses wrong. he's got a curve, but no one cares about it. wada has to get out of AAA at some point. i don't understand why it wasn't tonight, either.

Well, Beeler probably got the start simply because he can be brought up and sent down easily. Wada is technically in AAA on a rehab assignment and they just went through the trouble of getting Richards through waivers. If one of them started yesterday and then they acquire a new 5th starter via trade, they'd be stuck with Wada on the roster if he wasn't willing to go down (he has to give his consent in advance before being optioned) and risk losing Richards again by trying to get him through waivers just when teams who missed out on pitching in trades might grab him. So we got Beeler for a game.

I expect a trade for a starting pitcher and some roster shuffling over the next few days.

Gorgeous AB by Russell in the 7th. 11 pitches, fouls off 6. Single to opposite field. Fed a steady diet of FB / Change and never got duped. So nice.

Odd double switch removing Castro who would have batted 4th in 8th inning. No mention on radio but I wonder if it signals a trade coming. Coghlan at 2nd. Also Javy Baez 2 HRs in first game back at Iowa. Lake and Olt also have hitting shoes on.

Total and complete Cubbery: DJ LeMahieu is 13 for 20 against his old team this season.

PHIL: Very sorry you had to watch the medical situation develop, and peaceful thoughts sent to the family of the loved one. Sure puts everything in perspective.

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.
