Haren lost to the White Sox at Wrigley on Sunday (4.2 IP, 3 ER). Being matched up against Chris Sale and his 15 strikeouts didn’t help. The Braves are 24-120 (.200) against Haren. Bourn and Pierzynski are both 5-16 (.313).

Perez, who missed most of July (foot contusion), was a spiffy 4-0 with a 2.88 ERA before he went down. In the four starts since his return, he’s gone 0-4 with a 7.43. None of the Cubs have faced him.

Go Cubs!

Pat Hughes in postgame yesterday provided his research on Williams Perez. Paraphrasing: The main thing I know about him is he's a pitcher whose name has two last names.

haren throws an inning of weak contact and horrible swing outs. fowler takes the 2nd braves pitch of the day for a triple. the braves team is pathetic, especially since the trade deadline. it's a nice feast before the cubs get back to non-AAAA teams.

Another 4 1/3 IP outing for Haren. Is this something that continues into Sept? I'm thinking Clayton Richard might get another shot soon. Not many good choices but it's a definite roster flaw.

Kang hits a HR (his 2nd solo HR) after Marte is thrown out at 3rd on a steal attempt. 2-1 Pitt over SF, now 8th

montero HR...bottom 8th...cubs take a 1 run lead...unf. SOLER POWER! BACK TO BACK! thank you ejax.

This was such a hell of a win and this offense is so exciting right now. How many opposite field HRs was that? 3? Will be very interesting to see what Hammel does tomorrow because if he can just be decent could do a lot. Also, we've been doing this with Schwarber slumping some.

for those in Chicago, the Cub broadcast ended without postgame stuff as WBBM flagship went directly to Bears-Colts coverage. The postgame was on XM though and Cubs network, which means regional radio affiliates that cover the team. I did get to hear the Maddon postgame as XM internet has built in buffer/cache of the broadcast.

Luis Valbuena solo HR (his 22nd) vs Greinke, 2-0 Astros in Houston LV is still hitting .210, odd season for him

aside from the SF/LAD potentially swapping out for the WC race, greinke doing worse opens up the NL CY race. guys like j.degrom (NYM) and t.rosenthall (STL) are also hunting for greinke's assumed top spot along with j.arrieta. that said, greinke's gonna need more than a couple bad starts to screw up his assumed lead even if everyone else keeps up their good pace.

Other than Travis, the bullpen was great again -- 4 innings, one hit, no BB, no runs. It would be nice if Hamel could get his mojo back and go 6 or 7 tomorrow.

Fowler could make the Cubs decision on him a tough one if he keeps playing like this -- post-break OBP of about .450, a switch-hitting leadoff hitter who gets on base, has some pop and steals some bases. No immediate CF backfill in-house.

the problem is he's the best CF option on the FA market by a good margin and he's relatively young. he should be able to get years+loot with that combo. that said, that very scenario might allow the cubs to offer him arbitration where either outcome would be a positive for the cubs. they seem to believe in almora, but he'll probably need another season or 2. CF is gonna be an interesting thing to watch this offseason along with the SP slot.

I assume you mean make him a qualifying offer, not arbitration. He definitely looks like a QO guy at this point, but he's likely to decline. He likely won't get $16M per on his FA deal, but if I were him, I'd decline the one-year deal and take the long-term money. My prediction: Cubs get a draft pick compensation, Fowler gets a bigger deal from someone else, Cubs once again trade for a guy with 1 year of control left. Predictions: Maybin, Pagan, Bourjos, or Gomez, in that order.

yeah...QO...it was late. also, your prediction seems to be most likely to go down. either way, there's strong bats with rizzo/bryant/schwarb and russell/soler are looking really promising going into 2016. 2nd/C should should be covered adequately in-house. the team can carry a bit of weakness with the bat or streaky production at CF.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.
