Hammel had another short outing on Tuesday against the Tigers (3 IP, 5 ER, 62 pitches) but didn’t factor in the 10-8 loss. Since June 12 he’s 1-3 with a 4.29 ERA, which is more in-line with his career numbers (65-75, 4.48) than we’d like him to be. The Braves are 27-83 (.325) against him. Freeman is 5-7 with 2 HR, and Markakis is 8-16 with a HR.

Wisler, a 22y/o Ohioan, came to the Braves in the Kimbrel-Upton trade with the Padres in April and was promoted from AAA in June. He started out strong but has gone 0-2 with a 7.20 in his four August starts, including losing to his old team (5 IP, 2 ER) his last time out. Undefeated at home, he’s 2-3 with a 5.30 on the road. None of the Cubs have faced him.

We’ll see Kluber (8-13, 3.52) vs. Lester (8-9, 3.58) tomorrow for the quickie with the Tribe before heading out west for the big games with the Giants (yes, Bumgarner) and Dodgers (Kershaw, no Greinke).

Go Cubs!

1 pitch, 1HR...fowler. playing these crap teams has been awesome lately.

So if Chris Coghlan finishes this season with at least a .340 OBP and ~18 HRs, where is he on opening day? Cubs LF, RF, 2B, bench, or on another team? Assuming they go with Schwarber in LF and Coghlan doesn't make more strides on infield defense, this seems like a conundrum to me.

Definitely a good problem to have. I also think his D at 2B is a real question mark at this point--he's not obviously bad, and it's not clear he can't get better (nor is it clear that he will get better or that he's bad). If Castro, Soler, and Schwarber are the guys he shares 2B, RF, and LF with, he could still see 300+ ABs a year (plus the occasional rest day for Bryant at 3B). I am fully convinced he is not a CF, though.

20 over .500 woo. SF/PIT is a night game.

So Schwarber is going to spend time this off season with Montero to learn more about catching. That's pretty neat. I hope Jorge Soler has someone he can hang with to learn how to run routes.

Hits a lot of line drives that don't leave the infield. JD talks about Soler needing to elevate the ball. Soler had 167 games, 652 PAs in the minors. (Bryce Harper's equivalent numbers were 139, 569.) Look at Soler's experience, not his age. He's a work in progress.

I hope the Giants, Pirates and Cards don't play the Braves the rest of the season.

PIT wins over SF... CHC has a 6 game WC lead (3 behind PIT for the #1 WC slot). awesome.

Obviously people are going to say that the problem is passing 2 good teams. That said I have maintained that the Cardinals would be passed for first place. But they keep playing well. There is just no way with losing Wainwright, Holliday etc that they wouldn't suffer a slump but so far they have defied the odds and actually thrived with some very fortunate (some would say unsustainable) pitching luck (see the Twitter sidebar). I think that the Cubs or more likely The Pirates WILL catch them. Putting all that aside for a minute I don't know anyone who foresaw the Cubs being 20 games over .500 in the last week of August. Maybe The Sporting News but I thought they were just trying to sell their publication.

Well in that 18 games we have 3 games against Giants, Dodgers and Cardinals and we will catch some very good pitchers. So more than catching the Cards having that record at the end will have meant proof that we are indeed a very good team. I really want to see if we can finally beat the Cards. This team still has some stuff to prove before the post season and this will be the stretch to see it.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be heard...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?

morel in the lineup and playing 3rd.

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.
