Arrieta won his fourth straight game on Thursday (6 IP, 0 ER) against the Braves, making him 4-0 with a 0.66 ERA in August, including a win against the Giants (7.2 IP, 0 ER). He's currently tied with Bumgarner and Wacha for wins at 15. Improving on his July (4-1, 1.90) would seem to be a tall task, but he’s on pace to do it. Arrieta is actually better on the road (9-1, 2.07) than at Wrigley, which might come in handy, say, on October 7th. The Giants are 11-55 (.200) against him. Duffy is 2-5. Posey is 0-6.

Cain, making his tenth start of the season, lost to the Cubs (4 IP, 5 ER) during the four-game sweep earlier this month and had a no-decision in St. Louis (6 IP, 2 ER) his last time out. The Cubs are 38-178 (.213) against him. Denorfia is 5-13, Rizzo is 2-18, and Bryant is 1-2 with a HR.

Of Bryant’s 20 HRs, 17 have been at home, including yesterday’s walk-off. At that pace, a 600-AB season at Wrigley would give him 48 HRs.

The pitching matchups for the rest of the series are Hendricks vs. Peavy and Haren vs. Bumgarner (oof).

The Cubs are a stellar 33-25 on the road so far--which is best in baseball. I hope y’all fit in a disco nap. It’s going to be a late one.

Go Cubs!

Couple of side notes about Javy's big night last night: he played 3B & stole 2nd - headfirst...

Well, here we go. I can say without hyperbole that this week is a million times more important then any in Cubs' history. /Kent Brockman

GEORGE A & HAGSAG: We were in Santa Barbara, Moonstone Beach, Big Sur, San Francisco, and L. A., got to see both the Cubs-Giants & Cubs-Dodgers series, including Jake Arrieta's no-hitter in person, which was so cool.

Then we got back to AZ just in time for the my boyz AZL Cubs playoff game.

f'real...and good luck to him on that HOF vote chase. this time he can't play victim and pretend him being a "republican" rather than an asshole and his playing career has anything to do with the vote...as if pretty much everyone from his generation of player isn't a republican, too. it'll end up being someone else's fault...i'm just waiting to hear who's fault it is besides his. professional victim...

CSN was talking about Sox trading Quintana possibly in offseason, Theo better get his ass over to 35th and Shields.

Cubs adding pinch runners for Sept....Bonifacio and Quentin Berry. wake me up when they add Ricky Henderson

Which one is Schwarber again? Skinny guy? Or is he the pudgy guy with the bad facial hair? Anyway sounds like he might have a future in this league.

i imagine j.arrieta is done after 6... ...still done "on paper" after 6 as long as the pen doesn't allow the run, but he gave up a single to start the 7th before being removed. 6ip 4h 1bb 8k, 1r 0er watch out greenkey. don't slip.

Len likes to play music from the visiting cities--eg, Huey, the Dead, and some Night Ranger last night. Plus, he's a huge dweeb.

I'm not into Night Ranger, but his "Sister Christian" selection was OK. Particularly since we did not have to listen to the whole song. Maybe tonight he can play some Jefferson Airplane or Quicksilver Messenger Service. I last went to AT&T Park 2 years ago. During one of the periods between innings, the PA system played "Lights" by Journey and the scoreboard announced an "Air Guitar Solo." I'm not a big Journey fan, but I had to admit it was well done. Somewhat akin to playing "Sweet Home Chicago" at Wrigley. I think AT&T also regularly plays "Don't Stop Believin'," which I really don't like, and Tony Bennett ("I left my Heart in San Francisco"), which is hard to argue with.

The scary thing for the national league is that Schwarber is mired in his first slump. I can't really see that they are pitching him differently, he's just missing more. Classic slump. Just not seeing the ball really well right now in between thumps out of the park.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

  • crunch (view)

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

  • crunch (view)

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.

  • crunch (view)

    and morel is injured...nice.

morel trying to play LF from 3rd...runs into canario while leaping and comes down ribs/arm-first.

hopefully he sticks around to finish this terrible game, or at least is going to avoid the IL.
