Diamondbacks @ Cubs: Ray vs. Arrieta (Game 134)

And on the 6th day, He pitches again.

Now that’s more like what we expected from this homestand--a nice, easy win. The regulars all knocked around a rookie, and then the bench got a little work in. More of that, please. And maybe the Montero trade is looking a little better.

ARI (65-70): LHP Robbie Ray (3-10, 3.72)
CHC (76-57): RHP Jake Arrieta (17-6, 2.11)
First pitch: 1:20pmCT

So Arrieta came within one hit and a Starlin Castro of a perfect game on Sunday. In May, back when he was mortal, he had a no-decision (6 IP, 3 ER) in AZ. The D’Backs are 17-47 (.362) against him. (They are currently top in the league in runs scored.) Hill is 7-17 with a HR. Salty is 3-4.

Ray was 0-5 with a 6.00 ERA in August but pitched better in his last outing, a no-decision (5.2 IP, 1 ER) in Denver, of all places. The Cubs are 6-11 (.545) against him.

It’s nearly impossible that Arrieta will top what he did in LA, but make sure you tune in--at least till someone gets a hit.

Go Cubs!

Comments

The more I read about Arrieta, the more I suspect he is not going to be satisfied with a no hitter unless it is followed by another.

And on the 6th day, He pitches again. --- Who else would be appropriate to pitch the day after Godly?

@BruceMiles2112: #Cubs Saturday: Fowler CF, Jackson RF, Bryant LF, Rizzo 1B, Baez 3B, Castro 2B, Ross C, Arrieta P, Russell SS

Mike Olt still awaiting final disposition.

The Cubs are obviously not placing him on Outright Assignment Waivers because they know he will get claimed, so they are probably waiting for best offer in a trade.

Most likely destinations:

1. White Sox
2. Milwaukee
3. San Diego
4. Cleveland
5. Miami

I hope Olt does well, even though it's the wsox. Not because I predicted he'd be a star - I never did that. What I did see was some really good power potential - which doesn't seem to be happening much now in Iowa, and I was curious to see if he could be a regular third baseman with some serious thump. I imagine he'll get his (last?) shot with the Sox since they don't have much at third right now. It could all prove to have been much ado about nothing.

Sometimes as we have seen (often with the Cubs), the touted prospects don't work out. It was a cool thing that he came over in the Ranger's fleecing for overrated-now-suck-ass Garza. He had some bad luck in the form of injuries, and when not injured he never showed enough consistently to me to make me think he would be anything more than 25th man on the bench - made even moreso with Kris Bryant being the best Cubs rookie postion player in like 30 years. Actually the Cubs now will eventually have a decision to make with Villineuva at 3b who has a fantastic glove and is learning how to hit finally. He got pushed ahead of your guy. When al, is said and done, Olt was given opportunities and the org invested a lot of resources into the dude. He didn't respond. Jim Hendry would have kept him. TheoCorp not so much. If he does well with the Sux, good for him. He certainly has a nice arm/glove and they have need as you said. Maybe Brett Jackson can get a shot with them too.

That's one of the things I like about TheoCorp - letting go of investments that don't pan out (see Jackson, Edwin). There's a lot of interesting decisions for TheoCorp. There's that Contreras kid, too, catching and hitting like a maniac. You've got Montero who has decided to take Schwarber under his wing and teach him some catching stuff during the off season as a tutor. It's all good stuff. Things have changed on the North Side.

damn, it's nice to see wrigley packed again. it's real people in seats, not "30K tickets sold and only 20K actually in seats" (screw u scalpers). it's also nice to not hear fans of other teams cheering over the home wrigley crowd because of getting drowned out by visitors.

morel in the lineup and playing 3rd.

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

    also little optioned, palencia up.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."
