Brewers @ Cubs: Davies vs. Hendricks (Game 152)

The Cubs magic number is 3… and Jake goes to 20.

MIL (63-88): RHP Zach Davies (1-2, 6.00)
CHC (89-62): RHP Kyle Hendricks (7-6, 4.22)
First pitch: 7:05pmCT

Hendricks had a short outing in Pittsburgh (3 IP, 4 ER, 3 HR) on Thursday and was fortunate to come away with a no-decision, in a game the Cubs would go on to win 9-6. He’s 2-2 with a 3.56 at Wrigley this year. In his two starts against the Brewers, he’s 1-0 with a 0.73. Overall, they are 16-69 (.232) against him. Gennett is 3-12.

This is Davies’ fifth start since joining the big club in September. The 22y/o rookie was acquired by Milwaukee in the trade with the Orioles for Gerardo Parra in July. Davies lost to Cinci his last time out (6 IP, 3 ER). It’s not a huge sample size, but he’s working on some serious reverse splits: righties are hitting 14-45 (.311), while lefties are 5-35 (.143). None of the Cubs have faced him.

Go Cubs!

i wouldn't mind them looking for CF out on the trade market. i'm not really into committing 3-4+ years to fowler at top price with almora lingering in AAA (even if he's not 2016-ready, which he probably won't be). it's a junk CF FA market and fowler is easily the top guy in the class. he's gonna get money and years.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Cubs are probably going to trade for Pagan or Maybin if Fowler declines his QO. Almora earned his promotion to AAA for 2016, and the Cubs likely want to stop-gap that spot for one more year with no other very good candidates in the organization.

1-0 after 5, and I don't think either pitcher has topped 90mph. Hopefully, the Cubs can get this kid the third time around -- he has made them look feeble so far.

schwarb and fowler combine for an awesome, stupid, awesome defensive play...shame a run scored on a sac fly, but that was gonna happen anyway given how deep it was hit.

Amazing catch and play by Schwarb! But...hard to imagine anyone pitching worse than Grimm did tonight. Just awful. Very discouraging.

Did anybody else have trouble pulling up this site? My browser timed out the last couple of days every time I tried to come here -- until this evening. I even tried different browsers and from different locations (both home and work). Just wondering if anybody else also had problems.

Well, that was a buzzkill. Top 4 in the order go 0-16 with nobody reaching base. Looks like the Cubs started their off day one day early. Bleh.

g.polanco (PIT) injured running the bases in the 9th. limped into the dugout after scoring from 2nd and went straight down the tunnel... also, PIT has a 6 run lead in the top 9th.

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

The level of conversation on this site is intelligent, reasoned and informative. Miles ahead of other Cub sites.

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    two fouls
    three called strikes
