Cubs Cooperate with Angels to Edge Snakes at Diablo

Shawon Dunston Jr (Cubs) and Natanael Delgado (Angels) stroked consecutive two-out run-scoring singles to highlight a three-run 1st inning, as the Angels/Cubs co-op team edged the Diamondbacks 5-4 in Opening Day Arizona Advanced Instructional League game action this afternoon at Diablo Stadium Complex Field #7 in Tempe, AZ.

The game was called by mutual agreement after 6-1/2 innings of play.

Austin Byler and Gabriel Guerrero (Vladimir's nephew) belted solo home runs and 2015 1st overall draft pick Dansby Swanson plated a run with a sacrifice fly for the Diamondbacks in a losing cause.

The Angels/Cubs roughed-up Diamondbacks starter Archie Bradley, as the D'backs top pitching prospect allowed four runs on six hits and a walk (and two WP) in just 1.1 IP.

Cubs LHP Eric Jokisch (staying in shape for a possible call-up to Chicago) got the start for the Angels/Cubs squad, allowing three runs on six hits (four singles, a triple, and a home run) in 6.1 IP (70 pitches - 51 strikes), with three strikeouts (all three swinging), no walks, one nifty pick-off at 1st base, and an impressive 10/3 GO/AO (including two timely DP grounders).

Taylor Teagarden caught the game for the Angels/Cubs, but did not take an AB. Like Jokisch, Teagarden is staying in shape in Arizona while awaiting a possible call-up to Chicago.

Johnny Giavotella (on LAA 15-day since 8/20 with nerve palsy that has caused "double-vision") played 2B and led-off for the Angels/Cubs, going 1-4 at the plate (a single and a run scored). Barring a medical setback, Giavotella is expected to be reinstated from the DL and rejoin the Angels this coming weekend.

The Arizona "Advanced" Instructional League is sort of a junior AFL, with older players than you would normally find at "basic" instructs. Among other things, "advanced" instructs provides a platform for MLB players (like Angels 2B Johnny Giavotella) who are rehabbing from an injury or illness (the minor league season is over, so it is no longer possible to send players on a conventional minor league rehab assignment), and playing time for players staying in game shape (like Eric Jokisch and Taylor Teagarden) pending a possible call-up to the big leagues prior to the concluision of the MLB regular season or during the post-season and for more-advanced prospects who were unable to find placement on an AFL roster. (The Angels/Cubs co-op "advanced" iInstructs squad is where injured Cubs reliever Jason Motte will likely go if and when he is cleared to throw off a mound).

There are only five "advanced" AZIL teams: Cubs/Angels (co-op), Diamondbacks, Rangers, Reds, and Royals. There are two advanced AZIL games scheduled every day, and so each advanced AZIL team gets a bye every fifth day (just like the AZL).

All of the organizations with teams in "advanced" AZIL (except the Cubs) also field teams in the basic (traditional) AZIL. The traditional AZIL features 16 teams, including two Mariners squads ("white" and "blue") and one KBO team (SK Wyverns). There were two Korean teams in traditional AZIL the previous couple or three years, but the NC Dinos aren't sending players to Arizona this year.

Also, the  Royals will be extending their Instructs a week or two beyond when the other teams are done, and so the AZIL Royals have scheduled games against local JC and college teams after everybody else has finished up and gone home.

Here is the box score from today's game (Cubs players highlighted in bold & underlined

Pirates barely celebrated on the field after clinching a playoff spot last night. Of course, they have been there 3 years in a row now. So, how much should the Cubs Celebrate on the field if they clinch a spot this weekend? I'd prefer it to be quite muted, especially against Pittsburgh. Save the real celebration in front of the Pirates for winning on 10/7.

The Cubs have a dance party after every home win, you don't think they'll have a party for getting in the playoffs lol? I'd say it's a bunch of young kids having fun out there, celebrate every moment of success, especially something so rare like the Cubs making it to the playoffs. Rizzo and Castro especially deserve it.

Agreed...but feel like I've seen some pretty good celebrations in the last few years. On one hand, considering how far they over achieved expectations, they deserve it...but as a fan, I don't think we've won anything until 10/7. Meanwhile...the Pirates are impressively good. Already on their way to a 6-1 road trip. Anyone counting them out for the WC game just because of Arrieta is getting way ahead of themselves. On about 12 occasions over the last month, I thought the Cubs were sure to catch them. If we don't sweep this weekend, it is basically a done deal that we play in Pittsburgh.

I guess the old-school opinion is to not celebrate getting to the Wild Card game, but I feel like they should do what they want. It's a long season, a grind, and it's an accomplishment for any team, particularly one that appears ahead of schedule. Maybe don't go apeshit like you won the World Series, but a celebration of some kind is just fine.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.
