Minor League Free-Agents

Fowler and Cook

As expected, the Cubs extended a $15.8m qualifying offer to Dexter Fowler, who will decline it. That means the Cubs will get an extra draft pick after the first round, if Fowler signs elsewhere.

The Cubs also claimed Ryan Cook off of waivers from Boston, for some reason.

i wonder if they'll go 3-4+ on folwer on a front-loaded contract with the intention of trading him if needed. it would be nice to snag a 2 year deal, but he's 29 and his agent is boras. with excess cubs youth talent around (and an expendable c.coghlan) it's hard to tell what's up and gauge the trade market, too. *shrug*

Man, these guys sure like to scour the Boston roster for stuff. Now if they get Yoan Moncado off waivers, THAT will get my attention.

Waiver... I'll have to admit, this management works the waiver wire better than any other period in Cubs history. So, they have the wherewithall to make a claim, or cut a guy to make room for another WW dude on a dime. I think they even claimed and waived the same guys a couple times last fall/winter.

they've picked up like 100 dudes and i'm drawing a blank on how much positive impact came of almost any of them aside from l.valbeuna back in 2012.

WAIVER CLAIMS: Here are some recent ones made by the North Siders: Cole Hamels (I HAD to include this) Anthony Varvaro Jacob Turner Jason Berken Donn Roach Mike Kickham Emilio Bonafacio Ryan Cook Sandy Rosario Ryan Lavarnway Shane Peterson Logan Watkins

I see where Willson Contreras is now listed as not being a Rule 55 free agent. I always learn so much from AZ Phil, and was really happy to meet him in Mesa in March. I'm about to learn another ripple in baseball's silly rules, I figure.

Do you think the Cubs will protect Contreras, Johnson, Candelario, Vogelbach, Black, Cooper, Francescan, Martinez and Torrez from the Rule 5 Draft?

I think AZ PHIL had opined on this already, but Candelario, Black, Contreras and one of Martinez/Torrez are high percentage "keepers". I hope Black can iron out his control problems. He could be really good. It would seem to me that the Cubs brass are probably exploring deals with AL teams where Vogelbach could be added in a package before they boot him. Some part of a trade with the Tribe for example, and their pitcher Carrasco. I mean - that's what I would do!

JAMES W: I would say that Contreras, Candelario, P. Johnson, Vogelbach, and Black are the post-2015 Rule 5 Draft eligibles most-likely to get added to the Cubs MLB 40-man roster by the 11/20 deadline.

But then I thought RHSP Felix Pena (who led the Cubs minor leagues in strikeouts in 2015) would get added to the 40 if he didn't sign a 2016 minor league successor contract, and despite having ten slots open on their MLB 40-man roster the Cubs just let him walk away as a 6YFA without much concern, so maybe they'll roster only three Rule 5 eligible guys.

I see that Chris Coughlan finished 24th in the League in OPS. Why do I get the feeling the Cubs don't value him much?

he's either going to be a nice trade chip or one of the best corner 4th OF'r in the game (assuming the team keeps soler, which i assume they will even though some don't...dude has 3 more years of contract for around $11.5m total before he can opt out of his contract and into arbitration with club control still intact). either way it's a win for the team.

Correct me if I'm wrong, AZ Phil, but I believe Coghlan is arbitration eligible and can be a free agent after 2016.

TITO: That is correct.

Chris Coghlan is arbitration-eligible for the final time post-2015, and he will be a free-agent post-2016 (presuming he doesn't sign a contract extension and/or a multi-year contract in the interim).

Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are the other two Cubs eligible for salary arbitration post-2015 who can  be a free-agent after the 2016 season.

David Ross and Jason Hammel (who has an automatic vesting option based on IP or else a club option with a buy-out) are the other two Cubs free-agents (or in the case of Hammel, a possible FA) post-2016.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?
