Cubs Tie Bees While 66ers Blank Pelicans at Diablo

Matt Rose belted an RBI double, singled, and stole a base, Eloy Jimenez singled twice and scored a run, and Justin Steele and Kyle Twomey combined to toss a five-hitter for the South Bend Cubs (Lo-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs), while Michael Pierson ripped an RBI single and walked and SP Joe Gatto fanned seven in 4.1 IP for the Burlington Bees (Lo-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels), as the Bees and Cubs played to a 1-1 tie on Field #4, and Trever Allen drove-in two runs with a SF and an RBI double and Jake Jewell and four relievers combined to hurl a four-hit shutout, as the Inland Empire 66ers (Angels Hi-A affiliate) blanked the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Hi-A affiliate) 3-0 on Field #7, in Cactus League Minor League doubleheader action this morning at the Diablo Stadium Complex in Tempe, AZ.

It was a "bullpen day" for Myrtle Beach, as six Pelican relievers threw in the game on Field #7.

Four position players (INF David Bote, C-1B Alberto Mineo, OF Kevonte Mitchell, and INF Sutton Whiting) were moved-up from the Eugene/Mesa group (Extended Spring Training) for the day, providing additional roster depth for the Pelicans and SB-Cubs.

In Minor League Camp roster news, INF Danny Lockhart has been moved-down to Myrtle Beach from AA Tennessee. (Lockhart spent the 2015 season at Myrtle Beach).

Cubs Minor League Camp Rosters
Cubs Spring Training Depth Chart
(both updated daily)

Still waiting for final minor league roster cuts, moves, and adjustments, although several pitchers and position players presently on the Iowa, Tennessee, Myrtle Beach, and South Bend active lists will likely be temporarily assigned to Eugene (AKA "Extended Spring Training") for a few days until further disposition can be determined. Last year, about a dozen pitchers and position players were left behind at EXST simply because there was no room for them on a full-season club's Opening Day roster, but the Cubs did not want to release them, either.

Also, the Cubs will likely assign one position player (typically either a back-up catcher or multi-postional utility-type player) to each of the four full-season affiliates as a "player-coach," with the player inactive (usually by being placed on the club's 7-day DL with some vague soft-tissue injury) but staying in playing shape so that he can be activated in case another player goes on the DL. Last year, IF-OF Jonathan Mota (Iowa), C Tyler Pearson (Tennessee), C-1B Alberto Mineo (Myrtle Beach), and C Erick Castillo (South Bend) were the player-coaches for the four full-season teams, and RHP Jose Zapata (who was unable to pitch due to a broken neck suffered in a car crash post-2013) served as a player-coach (assistant pitching coach) with the short-season AZL Cubs.

Here are the abridged box scores from the two games played today at Diablo (Cubs players only):

AZ Phil, Have you heard who the other 15 Latins are that are coming?

HAGSAG: All I know is that there are supposed to be 18, and three of them (Ochoa, Palma, and A. Rondon) arrived yesterday.

HAGSAG: 2B Jhonny Bethencourt, RHP Hector Garcia, RHP Jose Leidenz, 3B Rafael Mejia, and SS Yeiler Peguero have arrived at Riverview. That leaves ten.

OF Bijan Rademacher moves-down from AAA Iowa to AA Tennessee, and 3B Jesse Hodges, RHRP Daniel Lewis, RHP Tommy Nance, RHSP Jeremy Null, and C Tyler Pearson move-down from Myrtle Beach to EXST. NOTE: Tyler Pearson and Alberto Mineo MIGHT serve as player-coaches (Pearson with Tennesse and Mineo with South Bend - TBA).

Also TJS #2 for catcher Will Remillard (will miss 2016 season).

FINAL POSITION PLAYER ROSTER ASSIGNMENTS AT MINOR LEAGUE CAMP: I'm not 100% sure, but it appeared that INF Ryan Dent moved-down to Tennessee with Rademacher yesterday, and OF Mark Zagunis might have been moved-down to Myrtle Beach (he wasn't with the Tennessee squad yesterday, and with Remillard done, MB will need an emergency #3 catcher behind Brockmeyer and G. Amaya). OF Trey Martin (who was assigned to the Myrtle Beach squad) is injured (ankle or knee?) and probably will remain at EXST (at least for a few days). 2B Stephen Bruno has disappeared since being moved-down from Iowa to Tennessee last week. I haven't seen him lately, and I don't know if AA is appropriate for him in 2016 since he spent all of 2014 and all of 2015 at AA. And either Matt Murton, Ryan Kalish, or Juan Carlos Perez will not make the AAA Iowa Opening Day roster (not sure which one is "odd man out"). However, the Third Man could be retained as a "player-coach" at Iowa (inactive until needed).

If PCA and Mervis both go down I guess Mastro would have to be the 13th bat.
I really think PCA (if he keeps hitting) can help more than Mastro. I understand the development piece. He wasn't hitting well in Iowa before Belli's injury. But, if he keeps hitting, they can get him ABs. But, he probably goes to Iowa. So, I guess it's really Mervis vs Mastro for the 13th spot. Mervis doesn't have anything more to prove/learn at AAA unless they change his swing or something like that.

I don't think Almonte can go to Iowa unless we DFA him and no team picks him up.

I don't necessarily agree with the notion that the Cubs cannot be as good as the NYY, LAD or ATL so just don't try. The young guys are playing well. The arms are producing. Veterans are good or at least okay. We're winning the division on April 30th.
I think getting a better DH or CP is worth the effort. I'm not saying give up ONKC, PCA or Jaguar for a rental. Horton might the arm we add this summer anyway!! ONKC might be the DH we add this summer.  But I wouldn't mind adding an arm like Kopech in June to help earlier than usual.
Don't sell the farm (we can't right now anyways with all the injuries) but it's something to think about.

Horton to Iowa !! He's getting closer folks !!

It is easy to quibble about details, but the major thing I see is that I believe that PCA will return to Iowa when Bellinger comes back, regardless of how well he does until then.

Mervis will be going down.  He needs consistent playing time, whether to get him ready for the Cubs to bring up, or to improve his trade value.

Madrigal and Mastrobuone are pretty interchangeable as far as value is concerned.  I doubt that the season will be substantially changed no matter which one is chosen.  Madrigal may win one game with a timely single, while Mastrobuone may win one with a timely home run, but I would expect a wash for the season.

The pitching staff will be all of the above.  Wesneski, Keagan, Alomonte, et al will remain on the Iowa shuttle whenever someone is temporarily overworked and a new rested arm is needed.  I doubt that will change.

Right now it looks as if the Cubs are performing at the upper end of their team potential.  But their talent level is nowhere near elite level, and adding one or two players, whether closer or hitter, is not going to bring them up to an elite level, equal to the Dodgers, Braves, or Yankees.  We are going to have to wait another year or two for that, when the PCA, Cassie, Horton, Brown, Alcontara group not only come up, but have a year or two experience behind them.  And of that group, Horton and Brown are the only ones that can really make an immense difference.

One elite pitcher is much more valuable than one elite hitter.

18-11 and gave a way a "few". Leading the division on April 30th
So, I'm going to pose a question based on the idea of the injured players coming back and the roster appearing stable.
=> Steele-Taillon-Imanaga-Assad-Wicks-Brown-Wesneski-Keegan-Leiter-Alzolay-Neris are locks. That leaves Almonte-Brewer-Palencia-Little-Smyly-Lovelady for the last three pen spots. Hendricks is out for me.
=> Amaya-Gomes-Busch-Nico-Dansby-Morel-Happ-Belli-Seiya-Tauch-Wisdom-Madrigal are locks.  That means it's PCA-Mervis-Mastro for the last spot. If PCA out performs Mervis and gets routine ABs, I think Jed will keep him up. I still wonder if Mastro is a better option than Madrigal but's probably a waste of time to consider.
The Question: what are the spots we need to "add" ? 8th/9th Inning Bullpen spot, right?
If PCA can hit, I think our best lineup is Belli at 1B, PCA in CF and Busch at DH. Tauch seems to hit better when he's a fielder and not a DH. Maybe Tauch in CF. But Belli is certainly our best 1B defender !!
So, who can we add for late Bullpen help?
The dream is Clase from Clev, but they're winning so he isn't going anywhere.
Mason Miller from A's, but he'd cost a fortune.
How about Kopech from the Southsiders? He hits FAgency in 1.5 yrs. He turned 28 today.
    Thoughts?

Well, game 29 on the year was a hell of a game. That felt like a throwback, too. I had a feeling Morel had a shot at catching up to that fastball.
