Jake gets the first start, after his Cy Young-winning season. It’s just a bit weird starting in the wrong league and on the other coast, but it’s Opening Day, so all is right with the world.

The Angels have had a bit of success against Arrieta (14-47, .298), especially Escobar, who is 7-19 with a HR. The Cubs are 11-26 (.423) against Richards, who found his mean and went 15-12 with a 3.65 for the Angels last year. New-Cub Zobrist is 6-11 with a HR against him.

Lester vs. Heaney tomorrow.

we finally get to see what the 1-6 looks like (vs righties anyway). im interested to know how the 2/3 slot is going to align. zobrist 2nd/6th? heyward 2nd/3rd/6th? i wouldn't complain about heyward being shoved behind the core of rizz/bryant/schwarb in the 6 slot, myself...though i get the feeling he'll slot 3rd based on maddon tendencies. no matter how it's shuffled, it's nice having 6(+) batters up top that could all make a case for more PAs. soler or lastella DH? rightie going for LAA...

Not sure if that's what you mean by projected but this is definitely the lineup tonight. Jesse Rogers is saying Madden told him Heyward in the 2nd spot will be the norm which makes a lot of sense to me. High contact and on base player with good speed and more importantly smart base running skills. If he develops more power that's gravy but his current skill set is tailor made for top of the lineup.

i'd rather have an either/or when it comes to zobrist/heyward and the 2 slot. rizzo/bryant/schwarb are guys i'd like to see have a lock on the 3-5...in whatever mix. not a huge deal...i'd just rather rizz/bryant/schwarb all get those 30-ish extra PA a year by moving up a slot over either zobrist or heyward.

I read a couple articles with quotes from Madden saying he was debating the benefits of having more people on for the power hitters and giving those hitters a few more turns through the lineup and I can see both sides. One argument I heard for this lineup is its unlikely the combo of Fowler, Heyward and Zobrist go down 1, 2, 3 so it's more likely Rizzo and Bryant will come up with people on base which makes sense . Either way Madden has shown a willingness to back away from experiments if the numbers don't support them as he has with the pitcher batting 8th so we'll see.

I had the honor of attending opening night in Anaheim. 9-0 is definitely a nice way to start the season and announce to the fans that it's okay to believe the hype. It was also, hands down, the warmest and most comfortable opening day/night Cubs game I've ever been to. Lots of great moments. Russell making a great play ranging to his left to snag a ball destined for CF and gun the runner down at 1B. Arrieta's dominance. Montero's blast. But my favorite moment came from the Cubs faithful who greatly outnumbered the Angels fans in section 127 after their 8th inning exodus. The familiar chant "Let's go, Cubbies!" (with the requisite clap, clap, clap clap clap) started up. It quickly grew. It was loud and unchallenged by the few remaining Angels fans. But there was something different about this chant. It not only was communicating our appreciation of their 9-0 performance but it spoke to the future. There was nothing left to urge our team to do, after all. The game was well in hand. This was southern California Cubs fans communicating to their players that this was the year. Even though this was the first game of the season, these fans (who may not have a chance to see them live again this season) were cheering on their team to win it all.

I was at the game last night, not too far from Kdub (Section 135/right field corner behind foul pole). It was everything he described. Cubs fans took over the stadium much like they do in San Diego (Dodgers fans for all the crap they get do drown out the Cubs fans...for the 5 innings they are there at least). So that's the good news...

Bad news is I'm blacked out tonight on mlb.tv.

Lots of high counts yesterday. Saw a lot of that last season, but yesterday was a masterpiece (as was Arrieta's effort -- good to see him pick up where he left off). I really thought Richards looked good the first several innings, but the Cubs really worked the count. Bryant's numbers don't look good on paper but he got a very nice walk. Still struck out twice I think but overall the team had Richards at 100 pitches by about the top of the fifth or so. Very nice. And the kind of situational hitting I have only seen by other teams not named the Cubs in the past.

The only real disappointment of the night for me was Zobrist striking out twice with a runner at third and less than 2 outs -- which is the exact situation he was brought in to improve. But, that's nit-picking. Some great ABs -- battling back from down 0-2 to draw a walk or go deep in the count. Bryant's discipline continues to impress.

    Prior to Monday's game at Salt River Fields, RHSP Yenrri Rojas threw a one inning (30 pitches) "live" BP on Field #1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, in preparation for what is expected to be his start on ACL Opening Day this coming Saturday morning at ACL Angels. (Although he might not be the best Cubs pitching prospect in Mesa, Y. Rojas has by far been the Cubs most effective pitcher at Extended Spring Training). 

    The other ACL Cubs pitchers who have been stretched out as SP at Extended Spring Training are RHP Luis Martinez-Gomez, RHP Freilyn Silverio, RHP Wilme Mora, and LHP Miguel Cruz (2023 DSL). Naz Mule figures to eventually be a SP, but he is not stretched out like the other five. .  

    The ACL Cubs bullpen looks to be LHP Branden Noriega, RHP Scarlyn Lebron, RHP Luis A. Reyes, RHP Gabriel Agrazal, and RHP Fraiman Marte (2023 DSL), and LHP Wilson Cunningham will report to the ACL Cubs when he finishes the Spring Term at the University of Chicago.  

    Both RHP Eligio Paredes and RHP Mason McGwire are on the Myrtle Beach Development List, so it is unclear right now if they will be assigned to the ACL Cubs or be reinstated at Myrtle Beach. 

    RHP Mat Peters has been throwing regularly in Cactus League Extended Spring Training games, but he received a PED suspension this past January that will cover the entire 2024 ACL season, so once the ACL season starts on Saturday, the earliest he can return to the mound will be at AZ Instructs (post-ACL) in August.  

    Among the rehab pitchers currently at Cubs Extended Spring Training, the ones who would appear to be closest to seeing game action are RHP Jaxon Wiggins, RHP Ethan Roberts, RHP Sam Thoresen, RHP Ben Leeper, and RHP JP Wheat. (Wiggins and Roberts threw "live" BP last week, and the others have been throwing bullpen sides on a regular basis once or twice a week).

    seiya was spotted doing work with the team pre-game saturday and sunday, but counsell says he's not anywhere near a rehab assigment.

    looking a lot like late may return rather than early/mid may return.

    steele may return to the bigs after his wednesday AAA start.

    hendricks has been throwing off a mound and may get rehab game work later this week.
