Cubs @ Diamondbacks: Hendricks vs Greinke (Game 5)

The Cubs lose their first one late.

CHC (3-1): RHP Kyle Hendricks (0-0, ---)
AZ (2-3): RHP Zack Greinke (0-1, 15.75)
First pitch: 7:10pmCT

After 13 starts in a promising 2014, Hendricks was inconsistent and a bit disappointing last year, going 8-7 with a 3.95 ERA. He was 6-4 with a 4.47 on the road. The D’Backs are 6-27 against him.

Greinke got shellacked in his new home park by a flu and the Rockies on Monday, giving up 3 HR and 7 ER in 4 innings. This is probably not a good time to catch him. The Cubs are 25-100 against him. Montero is 8-26 with 2 HR.

Schwarber’s surgery is set to take place in a few weeks, after the swelling goes down. There’s a pretty good chance his catching days are over. The Kawasaki Show takes his place on the roster.

Arrieta vs. Miller tomorrow.

Go, Cubs!

Well, I guess the "how does the whole Contreras/Schwarber thing play out?" that was going through my head is answered.

schwarber catching was a wishful-thinking disaster anyway...well, that's dramatic, but he's not cut out to do it long-term with his body and he's not very good at it even with youth on his side. getting soler's bat into the lineup was the bigger benefit than anything schwarber brought as a catcher. not only was his "passed ball" game weak, his inability to turn "wild pitches" into non-stats by getting in front of them was also weak. also, he let a lot of stuff that hit his glove clank out onto the ground. getting an extra plus bat into LF is a benefit to having schwarber catch, but that's about it...not like that's nothing. he's just very stiff behind the plate.

My first tweet on twitter in the last 30 months, or so, was to wish Schwarber well. It may be my last tweet for a similar length of time.

8 earned runs on 11 hits for Eric Jokisch at Iowa. It does not look like his year.

joe might have just given it up because there were 2 out and 0 on. it sucks to just give away outs, but that's pretty much the only reason i can think of for him doing it. it's not like the pen is heavily stressed and they couldn't have used 2 pitchers over that 1.1ip rather than just warren.

Nice win -- KB gets going, and a well-pitched game. Enjoy one more day of warm-weather baseball, boys.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.
