Reds @ Cubs: Finnegan vs Lester (Game 7)

After going 5-1 on the West Coast, the Cubs open at home.
CIN (5-1): LHP Brandon Finnegan (0-0, 3.00)
CHC (5-1): LHP Jon Lester (1-0, 1.29)
First pitch: 7:05pmCT

Lester started the season strong, giving up 1 ER and only 4 hits in 7 innings for the win against the Angels. He only had 4 Ks but didn’t walk anyone, either. The Reds are 18-62 (.290) against him. Hamilton is 4-5, and Phillips is 5-12.

Acquired last July by the Reds from the Royals in the Cueto deal, the swing man Finnegan went 5-2 with a 3.56 last year. On Wednesday, he had a no-decision against the Phills (2 ER, 6 IP). Only Heyward has an AB against him.

The Reds have gotten off to a surprising start, sweeping the Phillies and taking 2 of 3 from the Pirates at home. Let’s put at end to that nonsense.

An off day tomorrow, then Simon vs. Lackey.

Go, Cubs!

With Lester on the mound, what's the over on bunt attempts tonight? What creative ways can Maddon defend against this? Add a 10th player?

Q: What happens when the opposition takes a no-no into the 7th inning? A: The Cubs win 5-3!!!

Eloy with a walk-off home run last night at South Bend, Happ a walk-off double at Myrtle Beach. Eddy Julio Martinez is 6 for 16 with a home run. Almora has four walks in 17 PAs. Oh, and Contreras had four hits in the Iowa win.

I think Heyward's RBI single late in the game may turn out to be a very good thing for his Cubs' career, considering the role psychology can sometimes play in a batter's life. If he had struck out, it's possible he'd start pressing. Getting that key hit, in a key situation, with the fans going crazy, man, that was refreshing from a highly paid free agent. He's only 26 or 27 so it's not ridiculous to think he can still be influenced by his own success or lack of it. Maybe he's just immune to that stuff but if he isn't that's a great way to start off things at home.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be savored...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?
