Nationals @ Cubs: Gonzalez vs Hammel (Game 29)

Benjamin Thomas Zobrist (akaZo, Zorilla, Zobi-Wan Kenobi, a Good Virus) is good at baseball—and he accepts your apologies.
Over the last three games, Zobrist has 4 HRs and 11 RBIs (for 24 total, second on the team to Rizzo’s 28) and is responsible for the winning runs in both games against the Nationals. He has also scored at least one run in the last 7 games. And the only reason he’s not playing all over the field is because Javy has established himself as a crazy good defensive force. You gotta love this team.

For today…

WAS (19-10): LHP Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 1.15)
CHC (22-6): RHP Jason Hammel (4-0, 1.24)
First pitch: 3:05pmCT

Hammel gave up 2 ER in 5 innings to beat the about-to-be-swept Pirates on Monday. The Nats are 35-128 (.273) against him. Murphy is 6-11, Zimmerman is 11-35 with a HR, and Ramos is 3-9 with 2 HRs.

Gonzalez kept the Royals off the board for 6 innings for the win in his last outing. He struck out one and walked two. He was 5-4 with a 4.17 ERA on the road last year. The Cubs are 20-83 (.241) against him. Fowler is 6-14 with a HR, and Heyward is 7-31.

Roark (2-2, 2.35) vs Cy Arrieta (6-0, 0.84) tomorrow at 1:20pmCST to close out the series.

Go, Cubs!

Since the media has decided they are buddies, I looked at Kris Bryant's and Bryce Harper's career trajectories, such as they are, from a stats standpoint, and it's interesting that the biggest difference between them is simply that Harper got off to a faster start because he started right after H.S. I erroneously thought Bryant was actually having a bad year so far this year, but he's quietly got pretty good stats going. I love that he has such a high .OPB. His 22% strikeout rate could be better but it's an overrated stat when your OBP is at .377 and you're not hitting into double plays. He's hitting better on the road this year than at home, which is also encouraging. In other words, I was undervaluing his efforts. I've seen quite a few games this year, so what prompted me to think about it was that it seems he does well with men on base (he does) but not with tons of power. I think that's just the plate approach. If he went for the fences more, he'd be a much less effective hitter. All in all, he's doing just fine. With such a great supporting cast, he doesn't need to have that monster year that I suspect he will have within the next year and a half or so. With Dusty in town, I'm sure glad Maddon is managing this team instead of Dusty. Dusty is actually probably a pretty good guy for the Nats overall, much better than Matt Williams. But Maddon is so damn good with a young roster. Really amazing, actually.

dusty almost exploded in the dugout when russell was walking to 1st on a 3-ball count. the ump didn't do/say anything and gio was confused...then the rest of the world caught up to reality and russell returned to the plate...only to end up walking anyway.

Well, I hope Patton at least gets a large cup of coffee before the next bus to Iowa. That was very disappointing -- perfectly straight 91mph fastball, walks the first hitter (not really even close), gives up a big jump for a SB, then grooves a fastball to a lefty hitter for an RBI double. Didn't see anything positive at all. Nerves, I understand, but I was hoping to see better stuff.

rondon goes 4 days in a row for the 1st time in his career and nails it down. 23-6...unf. 101 run diff...2nd best in MLB is STL with 45 (they've already finished their game today).

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

  • crunch (view)

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

  • crunch (view)

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

  • crunch (view)

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.
