Nationals @ Cubs: Roark vs Arrieta (Game 30)

And it’s Arrieta with the kill shot.
WAS (19-11): RHP Tanner Roark (2-2, 2.35)
CHC (23-6): RHP Jake Arrieta (6-0, 0.84)
First pitch: 1:20pmCT

Arrieta went 7 scoreless—yawn—to beat the Pirates on Tuesday. If, as jackstraw puts its, “Superlative is the new normal” with this team, it certainly starts with Arrieta, for whom most adjectives and statistics are no longer useful. The Nats are a healthy 24-82 (.293) against him, due to a poor outing in 2013, or the pre-beard era. Espinosa is 4-8 with a HR, and Harper is 4-12.

Roark had a no-decision in Kansas City his last time out (7.1 IP, 3 ER, 4 K, 2 BB). He was 2-0 with a 4.22 in his two starts against the Cubs last year. The Cubs are 11-55 (.200) against him. Bryant is 3-5 with a HR, and Rizzo is 3-12 with 2 HR.

Vargas (0-1, 1.10) and the Padres vs Lester (3-1, 1.58) tomorrow at 7:05pmCST to continue the homestand.

Go, Cubs!

I mentioned here just before the season started that I had this crazy dream that the Cubs had a record of 53-17 or something like that. Very random. But ludicrous, too. At least, I thought so at the time.

So even though Arietta has a lower ERA and WHIP than the previous two years I don't feel like there has been one start this year I've looked at and said "wow he is on today" and yet he still has a no hitter and that ridiculous ERA. In some respects though the numbers bear me out with him down almost 1.5 K/9 from the previous two years and sporting about a .176 BABIP, also much lower than previous years so he is having a bunch more contact off him. We have a great defense this year and his approach has obviously been working and he's shown the ability to adjust mid-inning when a pitch isn't working but it still feels like we haven't yet seen great Arietta yet. What are other people's thoughts on what they've seen from him yet and do you think there's more of an attempt to pitch to contact to save the arm this year or has he just not yet found his next level yet? He has said he's more open to saving pitches this year and leave games early because of getting tired in the playoffs and ultimately I think this is a very good thing. Of course all this said his not quite on is still light years ahead of what most other pitchers can do when on.

soler and heyward seem to both be out of whack with their swings...lot of ugly between the bottom half of their bodies and the top half going on.

cubs down by 2, cahill hits for himself to start the bottom 7th because...i dunno...gets on base via a pitcher deflection. reverse-cubbery! fowler HBP... heyward/bryant/rizzo get a chance to make something of it.

Men on 1st/2nd! Joe has Hammel hit. Why?! Does nothing. Leaves it yp to Over Swinging Baez. He Pops out to Right! top 11!!

another IBB to harper with men on 1st/2nd, 2 out. harper has 6 walks today. zimm groundout!! ...man, baez plays some pretty D more often than not.

Just. Wow. Still a wild ride for all of us. Welcome to town, Padres!

Starlin Castro was removed from Sunday's game against the Red Sox with a rib cage injury. Castro suffered the injury while diving back into third base in the seventh inning. He pleaded with Yankees manager Joe Girardi to stay in the game, but was lifted for precautionary measures. Expect him to return to the Yankees' lineup in a day or two.

Walk Harper. Walk Harper.Walk Harper. Walk Harper. Walk Harper.Walk Harper. Win game. Next.

tarp on the field...delayed start...not looking that great since they don't even have a projected time as of yet for a start. thanks obama.

Does he have any options left, Phil?

morel in the lineup and playing 3rd.

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

    also little optioned, palencia up.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

  • crunch (view)

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).
