Phillies @ Cubs: Morgan vs Lester (Game 46)

Bringing it all back home…PHI (26-21): LHP Adam Morgan (1-2, 5-61)
CHC (31-14): LHP Jon Lester (4-3, 2.60)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lester had his shortest and shittiest game of the season on Saturday, losing in San Francisco (2.2 IP, 5 ER, 1 K, 3 BB). It was his worst game since he went 2.2 innings and gave up 7 ER in Detroit last August. The Phillies are 14-63 (.222) against him. Galvis is 3-8 with a HR.

Morgan is not having a pretty season. He didn’t pitch that poorly but lost to Atlanta (6 IP, 2 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) his last time out. The Braves are also responsible for his only win of the season. He was 2-5 with a 4.57 on the road last year. He lost to the Cubs in September in Philly (4 IP, 5 ER, 5 K, 1 BB). The Cubs are 7-18 (.389) against him. Baez, Fowler, and Heyward are all 2-3.

Eickoff (2-6, 3.86) versus Hendricks (2-4, 3.30) tomorrow at 1:20pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

Maddon spins the wheel-o-lineups and Bryant is playing 1B.

The line-ups, by the way, appear in the Twitter box on the left and usually very soon after they are made available.

Probably a good idea to give Rizz a couple of days off (slumps happen to the best -- Harper just broke a 4-for-33 with a HR yesterday). Never been a big fan of an all-RH lineup. The pitcher has the same look and same target for every hitter. At least, as a mediocre HS pitcher, facing a mixture of LH/RH hitters messed me up. A lack of talent and weak-ass stuff may have also been contributing factors.

Just noticed that Baez's current walk-up song is "Informer" by Snow. Dear God. That's world class bad.

ROSS #100! cubs lead 1-5, bottom 4.

No I have been thinking actually that he seems to lead the Cubs with balls called strikes all year. He really shouldn't be expanding his zone to swing at many of those either because it wouldn't lead to anything good. He's seeing the ball well though so hopefully it'll even out.

BTW, CRUNCH, Lester made a nice bh pick-up and toss to Bryant. Did you catch it? He's been workin' on the D!

i was distracted for most of the game and also missed the first few innings. but yeah, any time he makes a good fielding+throwing play on D it's worthy of praise and a trip to pizza hut for a personal pan pizza and $1 worth of songs on the juke box. seriously, i'll take it.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.

no days off til may 9th.  moves may happen if the pen gets too worked tomorrow.

On top of all that…Wicks scratched for Sunday due to “forearm soreness.” Bullpen day again starting with Mervis or Wisdom (or Wesn).

  • crunch (view)

"Morel told reporters after the game that he felt alright, just a little banged up — specifically noting his right hip and both elbows. He did say that he was optimistic about his ability to play on Sunday, though manager Craig Counsell may have other plans."

rsox putting pablo reyes up to pitch...an infielder...cranking 70+mph stuff.

...and of course he gets out of it with no runs scored...that kind of day for the cubs.

  • crunch (view)

...and wisdom replaces mervis on the mound to try to get the last out.

busch is at 3rd, but i wouldn't read too much into that.

wisdom's thrown a couple in the 80s (one of them 88mph), but both missed the strike zone badly.

matt mervis is no david ross on the mound.

    cubs run differential getting destroyed.

matt mervis pitching...wisdom replaces morel at 3rd.

he's featuring some high-50s thunder on the fastball.

through 15 pitches, he's straight up throwing BP...all mid-high 50s lobs.  no way he's going to jose canseco himself out of a job.

on pitch 21 he railed a 75mph fastball missing high on a 0-1 count.  ha.

  • crunch (view)

he's hugging canario in the dugout cuz morel will shrivel up and die if he doesn't hug at least a dozen people a day.
