Diamondbacks @ Cubs: Escobar vs Hammel (Game 54)

One-third of the way through the season...

AZ (24-33): LHP Edwin Escobar (0-1, 18.90)
CHC (38-15): RHP Jason Hammel (6-1, 2.09)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Hammel left his start on Monday after two innings with a right hamstring cramp. The bullpen proceeded to throw a perfect 7 innings to beat the Dodgers 2-0. Hammel ended up going 3-1 with a 3.09 in May. The D’backs are 19-85 (.224) against him. Goldschmidt is 4-11 with a HR.

Escobar lost to the Astros on Monday (3.1 IP, 7 ER, 2 K, 1 BB). He’s filling in for Shelby Miller, who decided to go on the DL with some sort of finger discomfort on his right hand, perhaps related to throwing so many gopher balls. The 24y/o Escobar was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox in April and had not pitched in the majors since two innings of relief in 2014. Zobrist, the only Cub to face him, had a double in his one AB.

Corbin (2-5, 4.96) versus Arrieta (9-0, 1.56) at 1:20pmCST tomorrow to close out the weekend.

Go, Cubs!

I don't get Jason Heyward. He's in a slump, pitcher throws 3 straight balls, and he has to swing sending a lazy ball to the OF. A number 7 hitter batting 2nd - take the WALK dude...

I thought the same thing, particularly since he's an OBP guy. But, maybe, he thought the way to get out of a slump is to get a good swing at a 3-0 fastball. Unfortunately, no dice. And, it's actually hard to call his struggles a "slump" -- it's been all year, and we're in June.

he's had an ob% over .330 for 16 games...6 of those in the first 10 days of the season...ob% of .301 in may...and he's still hitting 2nd going into june. that said, "heyward hitting 2nd" seems to be set in stone. it's up to him to raise the bar for the 2-slot. it's hard to watch. every time you think he's almost out of it, he slides back in. at least it seems like he's elevating more stuff lately, even if not all of it is going for a hit.

"alright cubs and sox fans..." ...not a great way to the start the stretch. luckily, the place is both in a forgiving mood and full of recent/fly-by-night fans, and the fans not only gave them a pass on that one, but cheered for their job singing the stretch afterwards. neat.

strop loads the bases after giving up a homer in between getting 2 outs...ARZ down by 1 run...t.wood comes in...goes 3-2 count...lineout to a leaping zobrist. DRAMA!

39-15!

One-third done! Cubs on pace for 117 wins, Rizzo and KB both on pace for 39 HR & 120 RBI.

Some lucky breaks today -- Rizzo's easy bloop drops between 3 fielders, then Hammel's grounder hits the bag at 2nd and the Cubs score 3 in the inning; then the D-Backs load the bases in the 8th and Weeks hits a bullet right at Zobrist. Interesting that Maddon pulled Strop. Having been to "Strop Games" last year and this year, I thought it was the right move. When he's off, bad things happen. Maybe it's my imagination, but it usually seems to happen on rainy/drizzly days. Addy -- please go back to hitting the ball to RF. Good things happen.

Dunno -- that ball was hit so hard that a clean bounce off the ivy/bricks may have made it hard to score from first. But, yeah, you are right -- lots of line drives get caught every game -- the timing of the Weeks liner magnified it. Great to see Jorge driving the ball.

MIL out here stealing 3rd with 1 out and down by 1 in the bottom 9th.

it worked.  this MIL team is annoyingly fun to watch so far this year...

it took him 24 pitches, 2 walks, 2 Ks...but he got it done.  woo.

neris still doesn't have his command/control...

i don't expect it to dog him all season, much like i don't expect alzolay to be a HR machine.

i'll take alzolay over neris to close out a game, though...over leiter, too.

MOREL HR!  his first homer in like, 3 years or something...or feels like it.

Prior to Monday's game at Salt River Fields, RHSP Yenrri Rojas threw a one inning (30 pitches) "live" BP on Field #1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, in preparation for what is expected to be his start on ACL Opening Day this coming Saturday morning at ACL Angels. (Although he might not be the best Cubs pitching prospect in Mesa, Y. Rojas has by far been the Cubs most effective pitcher at Extended Spring Training).

The other ACL Cubs pitchers who have been stretched out as SP at Extended Spring Training are RHP Luis Martinez-Gomez, RHP Freilyn Silverio, RHP Wilme Mora, and LHP Miguel Cruz (2023 DSL). Naz Mule figures to eventually be a SP, but he is not stretched out like the other five. .

The ACL Cubs bullpen looks to be LHP Branden Noriega, RHP Scarlyn Lebron, RHP Luis A. Reyes, RHP Gabriel Agrazal, and RHP Fraiman Marte (2023 DSL), and LHP Wilson Cunningham will report to the ACL Cubs when he finishes the Spring Term at the University of Chicago.

Both RHP Eligio Paredes and RHP Mason McGwire are on the Myrtle Beach Development List, so it is unclear right now if they will be assigned to the ACL Cubs or be reinstated at Myrtle Beach.

RHP Mat Peters has been throwing regularly in Cactus League Extended Spring Training games, but he received a PED suspension this past January that will cover the entire 2024 ACL season, so once the ACL season starts on Saturday, the earliest he can return to the mound will be at AZ Instructs (post-ACL) in August.

Among the rehab pitchers currently at Cubs Extended Spring Training, the ones who would appear to be closest to seeing game action are RHP Jaxon Wiggins, RHP Ethan Roberts, RHP Sam Thoresen, RHP Ben Leeper, and RHP JP Wheat. (Wiggins and Roberts threw "live" BP last week, and the others have been throwing bullpen sides on a regular basis once or twice a week).
