Cubs @ A’s: Lester vs Overton (Game 108)

DH: I wish Kyle Schwarber were here.CHC (66-41): LHP Jon Lester (11-4, 2.95)
OAK (47-60): LHP Dillon Overton (1-2, 9.33)
First pitch: 9:05pmCST

Lester beat Seattle on Thursday (6 IP, 0 ER, 7 K, 2 BB)—and the 12 Cubs runs didn’t hurt. He went 2-1 with a 7.36 in July, and is 5-2 with a 4.03 this year on the road. The A’s are 19-98 (.194) against him. Valencia is 6-20 with a HR.

This is the rookie Overton’s 5th start. He gave up 3 ER in 5.2 innings but beat the Angels. He was roughed up in Cleveland—Hello, Cleveland!—his last time out (3.1 IP, 5 ER, 1 K, 1 BB). None of the Cubs have seen him.

Arrieta (12-5, 2.75) versus whatever happened to Sonny Gray (5-10, 5.84) tomorrow at 3:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Nate Schierholtz has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for Ibutamoren.

Soler back up and DHing! He's been walking a lot the minors but not so many hits. Hope we can see some of what he was starting to do before he got hurt.

Joe Nathan gets DFA'd. Makes sense. He can go back to his hot dog stand. Mmmmmmm. He did get one win!

he threw 2ip 1h 1bb 4k in his 1st two appearances...then 1h, 1bb, and removed from the game in his last appearance without scoring an out on july 31st. i wonder if he's injured...especially since they went out and picked up the useless pile of flesh called joe smith followed by DFA'ing nathan. he was throwing 91-93mph and his slider looked good. *shrug* if he's perfectly healthy, both the joe smith trade and the nathan DFA seems like a huge pile of shit.

wow, this A's team really blows. !!TRIGGER WARNING!! lester is pitching to a mostly AAA talent lineup tonight...one that doesn't tend to run, too. m.semien is an intelligent baserunner even if he isn't too fast, but he's gotta get on base first...and hopefully not via HR. they're also batting semien first, a rarity (only 1 other time this season). they may be tipping that they plan on testing lester with a lineup construction like that even though there's not runners in the lineup...or it just might be because half of the rest of the lineup is full of kids. hopefully lester won't have to worry with baserunners at all. !!RESUME SAFE SPACE!!

top 3rd, 1 out, 7-0 cubs...yeah. OAK finally gets someone up in their extremely overworked pen. i hope they let billy butler pitch.

Tommy Birch ‏@TommyBirch Sounds like the #Cubs aren't anticipating Tommy La Stella to report to Des Moines in the next few days-if ever. #MiLB Oiy.

it's gotta be rough. you get sold this tighter-than-tight clubhouse story and you're a part of it...get injured and miss a month...get back to the bigs with good sucess...then you get sent down even though you're doing well. he's 27...they're screwing with his time, his experience, his money, and his career (right or wrong, whatever). maddon said la stella didn't take the demotion well when asked a few days ago. hope it all blows over and he's ready to go, mentally and physically, for the post-season...especially since it seems he's not in much of a baseball mood right now.

MIL out here stealing 3rd with 1 out and down by 1 in the bottom 9th.

it worked.  this MIL team is annoyingly fun to watch so far this year...

it took him 24 pitches, 2 walks, 2 Ks...but he got it done.  woo.

neris still doesn't have his command/control...

i don't expect it to dog him all season, much like i don't expect alzolay to be a HR machine.

i'll take alzolay over neris to close out a game, though...over leiter, too.

MOREL HR!  his first homer in like, 3 years or something...or feels like it.

Prior to Monday's game at Salt River Fields, RHSP Yenrri Rojas threw a one inning (30 pitches) "live" BP on Field #1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, in preparation for what is expected to be his start on ACL Opening Day this coming Saturday morning at ACL Angels. (Although he might not be the best Cubs pitching prospect in Mesa, Y. Rojas has by far been the Cubs most effective pitcher at Extended Spring Training).

The other ACL Cubs pitchers who have been stretched out as SP at Extended Spring Training are RHP Luis Martinez-Gomez, RHP Freilyn Silverio, RHP Wilme Mora, and LHP Miguel Cruz (2023 DSL). Naz Mule figures to eventually be a SP, but he is not stretched out like the other five. .

The ACL Cubs bullpen looks to be LHP Branden Noriega, RHP Scarlyn Lebron, RHP Luis A. Reyes, RHP Gabriel Agrazal, and RHP Fraiman Marte (2023 DSL), and LHP Wilson Cunningham will report to the ACL Cubs when he finishes the Spring Term at the University of Chicago.

Both RHP Eligio Paredes and RHP Mason McGwire are on the Myrtle Beach Development List, so it is unclear right now if they will be assigned to the ACL Cubs or be reinstated at Myrtle Beach.

RHP Mat Peters has been throwing regularly in Cactus League Extended Spring Training games, but he received a PED suspension this past January that will cover the entire 2024 ACL season, so once the ACL season starts on Saturday, the earliest he can return to the mound will be at AZ Instructs (post-ACL) in August.

Among the rehab pitchers currently at Cubs Extended Spring Training, the ones who would appear to be closest to seeing game action are RHP Jaxon Wiggins, RHP Ethan Roberts, RHP Sam Thoresen, RHP Ben Leeper, and RHP JP Wheat. (Wiggins and Roberts threw "live" BP last week, and the others have been throwing bullpen sides on a regular basis once or twice a week).
