Cubs @ Padres: Hendricks vs Clemens (Game 126)

If Addison keeps this up, they’re going to have to name a street after him.CHC (80-45): RHP Kyle Hendricks (11-7, 2.16)
SD (53-73): RHP Paul Clemens (2-2 4.82)
First pitch: 2:40pmCST

Hendricks held the Rockies to 1 ER in 6 innings in Colorado on Friday but ended up with a no-decision. He had a no-decision against San Diego in May, giving up 2 ER over 6.2 innings. (All these no-decisions...damn.) Overall, the Padres are 8-59 (.136) against him. Norris is 2-7.

Clemens has bounced around a bit and was claimed off waivers in June after being released by the Marlins. (That’s some rotation they’re building.) He had a no-decision against the D’backs his last time out (5 IP, 3 ER, 3 K, 3 BB). The Cubs are 5-23 (.217) against him. Montero is 1-2 with a HR.

Tomorrow is an off day, then we see the Kershaw-less Dodgers to finish the roadtrip.

Go Cubs!

Comments

Rizzo getting a well deserved breather today with Bryant at 1B. Soler back in lineup batting cleanup and playing LF, otherwise all of the all-stars batting 1-5 again (what a luxury)

Well I assume Ross is going to catch Lester in the playoffs, and it looks like Contreras is going to catch everyone else. I could see the Cubs keeping three catchers on the playoff roster as it would give them flexibility and Montero would have a left handed bat with some pop (at least historically) off the bench.

that was a very kind 3rd strike to hendricks to end the 3rd.

man on 3rd, 0 outs and got 2 pop-ups and a K...Maddux-lite indeed

unsurprisingly, the White Sox continue a tradition of stupid stuff....

@DannyEcker BREAKING: Guaranteed Rate has purchased naming rights to U.S. Cellular Field. Will be known as Guaranteed Rate Field thru 2030.

Now who can argue with that? I think we're all indebted to Gabby Johnson for clearly stating what needed to be said. I'm particularly glad that these lovely children were here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age.

Twitterverse reporting that Almora's examination by a hand specialist went okay, it's still just a hand contusion.

Maddon was pimping Russell for Gold Glove honors recently as a manager should do...

Here's some defensive numbers:

Fangraphs

  1. Crawford (22.2)
  2. Seager (16.9)
  3. Cozart (14.2)
  4. Hechavarria (13.5)
  5. Russell (12.4)

Baseball Reference

  1. B. Crawford 2.3
  2. Russell 2.0
  3. Hechavarria 1.7
  4. N. Ahmed 1.6
  5. Z. Cozart 1.5

.....

13.C. Seager 0.7

Traditional stats

Crawford

.978 FP, 11 E, 333 A, 162 PO, 562 Chances, 4.27 RF, 72 DP Turned

Russell

.978 FP, 10 E, 307 A, 130 PO, 447 Chances, 3.85 RF, 43 DP Turned

The Cubs great pitching has a lot more to do with their great defense this year and plenty of good luck  (#1 in ERA, #4 in FIP behind Nats, Mets and Dodgers with a rather ridiculous .258 BABIP against Cubs' pitchers).

Cubs pitchers do strike out more hitters than Giants pitchers and do walk more hitters than Giants pitchers so that's a few more balls in play. Cubs' pitchers actually have a higher groundball rate though. Crawford is just really good and baseball happens.

(sidenote: expect Heyward and Baez to be starting in the playoffs most games imo. They're glovework is and will continue to be essential).

i'm happy enough with the Lester signing, but Scherzer has more than earned the extra money so far. If he was in the rotation instead of Lester, this team would feel practically bulletproof to me. Blaspheme maybe, but I think Scherzer is the best pitcher in the NL right now.

Objectively true. Scherzer's FIP is almost a half point higher than his ERA, mostly I deduce because his BABIP is .249 so something ridiculous like that. It's not like the guy can't be scored on, but when I watch him, I sometimes feel that he's the most in control of the game moving around him.

nothing gets you going like someone talking about lester, eh? i hope you're on his payroll or he sends you used underwear or whatever you're into. btw, he holds runners like shit. he does things with runners i've never seen another pitcher do in my life...even going back before i was born as far as i can tell. would you like to discuss it? that sounds like it could be educational and fun. hit me up, bruh.

Folks, I've known Richard Lovelady since he was an 18 yr old Freshman at East Ga State College in Swainsboro, Ga.

I was the WBB Coach at EGSC and Richard was their prize recruit from outside of Hinesville, Ga.

My roommate was the Pitching Coach there.

Richard showed up a skinny, loose lipped, 83mph Lefty. Pretty good basketball player actually.

My roommate became the head coach.

Richard came back from a minor injury for his Sophmore year a more serious man. He hit 90mph and started mowing GA JUCO hitters down. It was really fun to watch.

He was the first D1 signee for EGSC baseball (school had only had athletics for five yrs at that point). He went to Kennesaw St and became their closer. One yr later, he hit 100mph and KC drafted him in the 10th Rd.

He lost the high velo with a surgery a while back.

It's so cool to see him in MLB. And now he's a Cub!! It's crazy to realize I actually "know" a Cub.

    He's a legit good guy.

    Easy to root for!!!

Tim. Thanks for remembering Lee Elia Day. It will always be one of the most epic rants in all sports.  It took about 3 seconds to recognize him from your picture but I  did get it right.

Now that Les Grobstein is no longer with us, that might contribute to this grand piece of Cubbery fading.

Just like fine wine, it should be heard...unedited. 40 years, wow.

Does he have any options left, Phil?

morel in the lineup and playing 3rd.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Richard Lovelady one walk & 20 K, 22 hits but no HR, high ERA, and two-to-one GB to FB in 12.1 IP, so I would guess that's why he got the call. Sort of the exact opposite of Luke Little.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Definitely surprised about Dick Lovelady. He has a phenomenal name but that’s probably the best thing he’s got. I was kinda hoping for Wieck even though he’s apparently still tossing 86 as his heater

wicks 15d DL...cubs select...get ready for this one...richard f'n lovelady.  lovelady's stregnths include being able to throw a ball left handed and that's about it.

    also little optioned, palencia up.

Open 40 man spot might see the return of CJ. He’s been okay in Iowa. Teheran has been rocked in his starts this year. SSS of course.

Wouldn’t be shocked seeing another 40 man spot open with Brewer losing his spot.

Word is that Counsell thought Mervis and Wisdom got too much work in yesterday so it will be Wesneski.
